I have too much anxiety and I know it's mainly thoughts that aren't helpful. Staying busy is def helpful..the more I can look outward at anything instead of inward at stressors..the better for me.

Thank you so much, actually I resonate with that . A good example is what happened when I retired , after having been a teacher for about 40 years. I was almost workaholic in my job , and was rather aware of it , but thought of course things would have been different after my retirement. What happened instead was that busyness became really pervasive in my everyday life , and it was related even with trivial things , like decisions about householding or scheduling daytime. It seems that the burden of job commitment gets like transferred over "free" time, and anxiety becomes my main emotion .
I'm working on it , following your so helpful suggestions here in this and in a lot of other videos you posted , and refreshing your Boundary course , because I found that it's crucial to me having wholesome relationships not to be overwhelmed by anxiety .
Another important step to me was understanding my People Pleaser attitudes which I learned to recognize by your videos about that subject, so helpful too.
That's why I feel deeply grateful to you !

Boredom is a huge trigger for me when it comes to my anxiety and depression. I only discovered this after I retired.

I did that for years, because I couldn't make a decision. Once I took the neccessary steps, I freed myself from the stress and anxiety, at least about that particular issue.

I agree that understanding and resolving one's core anxiety producing issues is the certain path to lasting relief. Now that I understand the origin of my anxiety - a long ago trauma that became PTSD - dealing with the decades of fallout has become burdensome, to say the least. Overlay that with a current traumatic experience, and it all became too much. Staying busy with meaningful tasks sidelines my anxiety. The essential tasks themselves have now become the recent source of my current anxiety; and I had become numb to them. Anhedonia helps nothing. Staying busy at the vital tasks has allowd me to suppress my anxiety; while reducing the very source of that anxiety.

Thank you. This is very helpful advice, and the insight that anxiety is covering up a deeper emotion is really interesting!

I keep busy because I think I am not good enough... Every time there is a situation where I feel threatened by my not-feeling-enough I get sent into a busyness frenzy even trying to do multiple things at once.
Good thing I am going to therapy but at the same time it takes time and effort. And time for myself and time to calm down.. last two are very difficult since I always keep busy with other activities (often "productive" ones)

Yes absolutely and as for backlashes one has to balance living a better life everyday as opposed to multiple times of servere suffering. If it involves exercise it helps you sleep. I think it depends somewhat on what 'busy' activity the person is doing.
I use to take very high doses of cortisone which is an interesting aspect (for colitis). I think in general everyone runs a treadmill to prevent emotional collapse. We all avoid horrors - isn't that normal. By the way I am far removed from anger.

Staying busy can raise anxiety, but also helps you handle stress.

It depends on the individual. I despise the pseudo-Calvinist idea that "busy-ness is next to godliness."
When dealing with depression and anxiety, being excessively busy makes everything worse. What I desperately need at such times is unencumbered free time.
I routinely need time just to sit and do nothing. Hence my attraction to Buddhist meditation.
