One minor correction: a knot is a unit of speed, not a distance. It's equal to one nautical mile per hour (about 1.15 mph). Mariners use nautical miles because one nautical mile is equal to one minute of latitude. If you travel sixty nautical miles, you have travelled the equivalent of one degree of latitude.

"There is no red Port left in the bottle" This is good to remember because the navigation lights on the port side a red so therfore the other side must be Starboard which has green Navigation lights. So when two ships are going to cross eech other if your on the Bridge looking forward if you can see red or port you are the giveway vessel and need to keep clear by usualy going behind or in front if safe to do so. If you are on the bridge and you can see Green or Starboard then you are the Stand on vessel and should keep to you course and not trun. Howeve sometime the captains will talk to each other on the VHF and agree a different option but this is rare

Favorite captain has to be Captain Kate on Celebrity. Our cabin was on the same deck as the bridge, and one morning I was walking out of my cabin wearing a pink shirt, totally oblivious to my surroundings (wife says I'm a typical male) and heard a woman say "Oh, that color looks great on you." I automatically said "thank you" and then looked and it was Captain Kate. She is very personable, loves to talk and is just so different from any captain we've cruised with before. We've had her twice, and both times she comes on just before cast-off and talk for a bit then says "now, as soon as I can remember which purse I left the keys for this thing in we'll be on our way."

Port or starboard. I was taught the historical reason for the terms (according to Dad). In old preColumbus history of shipping the ships left the shipping ports in Europe and headed south to go around Africa with the ports on the left and the stars of the sky on the right over the ocean. So, I always start sailing around Africa........ Joanne Barrett

CAPTAIN "BYE BYE" is our favorite. (or Captain Tuvo - Princess Cruises) His nickname came from every announcement is ended with "bye bye". Never had another captain that was so visible through out the ship and the cruise (has even had complaints from 'those people who love to complain' about who is driving the ship) and so open to conversation and informative with any questions you may have.

We were certain there had to be 3 or 4 of him, as he was everywhere. One of the funniest things he did was to hid behind the photography screens to photo bomb peoples professional photos! It was hysterical! He loves his ship(s) and he loves his passengers. I hope that someday he is my capt again!!

There was non I didn't know but we have had a boat for 28 years and been on many cruise ships so not sure what I was expecting. đŸ€Ł One way we remember the starboard and port sides is by using a rhyme. " There is no red port left in the bottle" which gives you PORT / LEFT & RED ( for the portside navigation lights) Hope this helps someone.

Another cruise hack is that for decks with staterooms, most cruise lines will have some sort of indicator on the carpet to differentiate between port and starboard. It sometimes might be different colors for the detail on the carpet and some cruise lines even have a design (Maybe fish for example) that lets you know if you're facing forward or aft

    • @fredrosenbaum8630
      @fredrosenbaum8630 Pƙed 11 měsĂci +1

Also there is a picture of the ship on your stateroom door to show emergency exit plan. The front of the ship on the picture is pointing to the front of the ship, so you have a reminder every time you leave the cabin if you just look at it. I don't know how many cruises it took me to realize this.

You did a nice job on cruise terms. My easy way to port and starboard is port is 4 letters as is left and starboard just has more letters. As a USA Navy war veteran, I look forward meeting other veterans during a cruise. Some cruise lines do have a veterans meetings, believe me the meetings have been amazing. I was on Oceania recently and I actually met 2 retired navy admirals but Oceania didn’t have a special time we veterans could get together. Imagine the story’s we could have shared.

This is a while ago and I don't have a good memory but we sailed on the "Crystal Bach". That was my favorite Captain ever. I think his name was Dewey - can't remember if it was first or last name. He was so personable and not on an "ego trip". He would walk up and down the decks & just start talking to the passengers. Was funny, smart and loved to tell jokes and be very funny and sweet. I think about him often.

Drydocking a ship means taking it out of the water in a graving dock or floating drydock to do hull maintenance. For example, the battleship New Jersey is currenly in Drydock #3 at the old Philadelphia Navy Yard for underwater maintenance. . When ship is undergoing maintenance above the wind/water line it is in the yard. It the Navy it also know as in an availability period which oddly means not available.

Here is my teaching on port v. starboard, and it comes from my fascination with word origins: POSH. You know that word for fancy rich folks? It is an acronym relating to cruising, oddly enough. It means Port Out, Starboard Home. It refers to people taking cruises to India from England. Being on the left (Port) side of the ship on the way there meant you were always facing land. On the way home to England, you wanted to be on the right side to face land. Those cabins cost more back in the day, so it's where the wealthier folks got their cabins.
Of course, the four letter word thing works great for Port, but also, Right is the side of Starboard that has 2 R's in it.

Starboard and port are based on early ships, centuries ago. Before ships had rudders aft to control the direction of the ship, they had a large, oar-like length of wood attached to the side of the vessel. Since most people, both now and back then, were right handed, this large length of wood, called the steering board, was placed at the right side of the ship to favor right handed persons. Since the steering board was an obstruction to landing the ship at a wharf at a port, the ship would navigate the left side to the wharf. Steering board would become “starboard” and port would be where you landed the ship on its left side.

Wahoooo! Got them all - mostly from obsessively watching cruise videos. My next cruise is coming up and I’m super excited. I’ve had it booked since 2019! And it’s been postponed 3 times and itinerary changed once and then tweaked twice more. As a result I have $400 on obc so I think that ought to be enough for the cruise.

Port is symbolic for red, starboard is green. Think of port wine for the left side. Some cruise lines would have red colour pattern in the carpet on the port side and green colour pattern in the carpet on the starboard side to help passengers.

Correction: "aft" and "forward" are directions, not locations. The "bow" is the front of the ship. The "stern" is the back of the ship. "Aft" means "towards the stern". "Forward" means "towards the bow". You can be facing "forward" while standing on the "Aft". You can be facing "aft" while standing on the "bow".

Port / Starboard - When paying passengers first sailed to Australia (or back to England) they were dubbed as POSH, not because they could afford the fare. POSH referred to Port Out, Starboard Home. This meant that those cabins would have a view of land if the ship was close enough to the coast.

Only just found your videos, but I got the lot!!!!!. You missed the BOW (not to be confused with arrow) also known as Forward or the pointy bit!. Another term not normally found is Bus boy (Waiter's assistant). I've been on 30 + cruises with lots of different cruise lines, but my favorite Captain has to be Captain Kate McCue of Celebrity. I was on Celebrity Equinox a few years ago and she was EVERYWHERE, including on the gangplank when we left the ship. AWESOME.

Counting the acronyms, I knew 54. My entire family are cruise addicts, so for us, this is more like "shop talk" since we're usually planning different cruises at the same time. We even use this lingo around our newest addict, Sophia (she's 10) , who my viewers will FINALLY get to meet on Friday! Before Sophia was a twinkle in her mommy's eye (Sophia is my niece), her mommy was a cruise addict too, so she joins in on the "shop talk". We're all training her very well and telling her what all the terminology means. She's now started to use it to help herself get her bearings. Of course @RoyalCaribbeanBlog is a huge help as well, as she watches those videos with us, especially the "Full Ship Tours" and tours of Cocoa Cay.

Ilana , fun video ! One thing I’ve seen, and I’m sure you have seen others do it , too
. Is that you collect all the questions you see popping up in several of your videos. Then, you have one Q&A video to answer them. I know in popular channels like yours, no way to respond to everyone, though you do an incredible job! I think it would be a very fun, informative video ! Because like you, not all your viewers have time to go back and read every comment and reply. Keep up the great works for those of us that get “tipsy” on Cruise and Cruise News !

I have joined many roll calls over the years and have had great experiences! First, the info shared is awesome. Many people have visited the ports of call before and can recommend things to do. I once booked a snorkeling excursion by a private tour group that was the absolute best excursion I have ever done. There were only 5 of us, so they let us decide what we wanted to see. I have shared great shore excursions with other cruisers, I have done cabin crawls where people on the roll call open their cabins to the group so people can see cabins they might not otherwise see. I once got to see a suite with a loft area that had a bed, bath, hot tub. The balcony was huge. They had a full dining room area and floor to ceiling windows. I'm sure I would never have seen that otherwise! We've done slot pulls where every one pays a certain amount and each gets a number of pulls. The winnings are then shared among the group. Most roll calls schedule a "meet and mingle" with the cruiseline. The cruiseline provides a room and snacks so everyone who has been chatting on the roll call for sometimes months (or sometimes years!) to meet in person. I have joined roll calls on Cruise Critic, but I think there are other places you can join. I ×old definitely suggest everybody join a roll call!
