Quite a few great suggestions even though I have cruised lots of times. One of my favorite things is cut up sponges that are soaked in dish soap and dried and put in a baggie. One little one will clean the reusable cups for sodas etc. The same trick could be used with laundry soap to hand wash any items that need a refresh. We also use 'fairy' lights with a 5 hour timer as a nightlight, hanging them on the magnet hooks along the walls. nice ambiance, too!

My favorite tip here is the one about filling out the survey. I always keep a note on my phone and when I meet a crew member that makes my trip better, I will look at their name tag and write it in my note so I have a list for the survey at the end and I can mention them by name to the cruise line.

Thank you so many great tips! My husband and I have done several cruises across many cruise lines. One other important “hack” that I never go without is my LIBRARY card. What?!? Yes, my library card. Here’s why: many of the modern ships conserve electricity by having you slide your cabin room card (key card) into a slot next to your cabin door. Once you do that, it “powers up” the room so that lights and outlets work. The ship conserves electricity because when you leave your cabin, you pull your room card from this device which shuts off power to the room. The problem is…many of us want to leave our phone or other devices in our cabin to charge while we go to dinner or a show, etc. I take my library card because it’s the same size as your assigned cabin card (the same size as a credit card…but who wants to leave a valuable credit card there…too risky) and that way we can turn off lights but leave our devices plugged in and charging. This is especially true of European (think Mediterranean) cruise lines as well as Middle Eastern cruise lines.

    • @LifeWellCruised

One thing my wife and I have done, is take a later flight home. This helped us avoid some of the stress of disembarkation day, and turned that day into another kind of ‘port day’ where we were able to enjoy the sites and have some more relaxation.
What we did was go to the airport (at a less stressed pace), dropped off our luggage, and picked up a rental car. We went out for lunch, spent some time at the beach, took in a museum, and got back to the airport in the late afternoon for our evening direct flight home. Drastic improvement over other disembarkation day experiences, including a missed flight on our honeymoon.

Great idea! After going on many cruises, It’s less stressful to leave a day early, & spend the night at a motel close to the dock. Motels usually have free transport there if you flew. We also find out the earliest time they allow you to board & get onboard & eat lunch.

    • @bigcountry35
      @bigcountry35 Před rokem +2

The later flights from the day of disembarkation is what I’m doing. It’s about a 1 1/2 hour drive from the port to the airport where we are going and the traffic is horrible there. I knew that would be the best option to make it less stressful and knowing we have the time to make it to the airport that evening

I remember in the past doing something similar to your suggestion. However, the last time that I flew from Puerto Rico back to the States, they would only let us check in our luggage 4 hours prior to flight time. So the only thing we could do was a post tour Excursion booked with The Cruise line. Bummer! At least the tour was pretty good

Even though I have cruised over 20 times, your tips & other comments were helpful ...great video. Thank you! I agree with the others that mentioned a checklist. I have created one that stays saved on my computer. Here are a more you may like ( I will warn you it's long LOL) - I pack a SMALL vicks vapor rub (especially since you are in a cool cabin then in the heat/helps to not get stuffed up). Pack regular size soap if you are doing a 7 day. Also I bring a handful of "just in case medicine" sample pkg of dramamine, imodium, tagament/heartburn, sinus, headache, etc.. (which all goes in a small packing cube). I pack a new kitchen trash bag for our dirty laundry that way I don't have to wash the mesh bag. Also what's handy to pack in your beach bag/purse when you get off the ship - travel size wet ones, hand sanitizer (which you mentioned), cold wet wash cloth in a quart size zip lock bag (for when your face is sweating or put on your neck)Also days prior I go online and have the post office hold my mail & have a cheap plug in automatic timer turn on my interior lights to my home. All of this sounds like a lot but I pack less clothes and grab sample size toiletries (deodorant., face wash, shaving cream, etc). Sample size lysol or febreeze is good for the bathroom as there is not an exhaust fan. What I do not use (example, un opened snacks, left over bodywash/shampoo that is tactful to give) I write a note for the cabin steward to enjoy (as it can get pricey for them to buy on their own) along with extra tip$ or I throw it away vs bringing it back with me (this helps with lighter suitcase in case you buy any extras). I only pack one pair of dress shoes that matches all of my dining room attire. My suggestion for new cruisers is after you put all of your clothes in the suitcase day(s) prior then revisit your suitcase the day before & take 1/3rd of it out...You will not wear everything or it's ok to wear the same shorts twice within a week and switch up the shirt (same for skits/dress pants for dinner) Pack extra undergarments as you may get hot & want to shower again from the day..prior to dinner. Also pack at least 1 pair of socks to walk around in your cabin. Also samples or roll on perfumes/cologne for my hubby and I vs trying to pack the larger ones in our shoe. Also for the men who use electric shavers and want to pack it, add a small extension cord (but not surge protector as they will take it). If you are coming in the day before, iron all of your clothes at the hotel & buy snacks. Now with covid & even after I think I will add a few pairs of gloves, anti-bacterial hand soap (instead of using their small soap), & my mask of course to the checklist. Lastly if you carry neck pillows for the plane, these can also be handy for your cabin lounging/sleeping. I pack a sleep mask & ear plugs. That way if my hubby wants to watch TV at 7am I can sleep in just a little longer.Hopefully this is helpful as well. So glad we are back to cruising. Let's all be safe and enjoy !! Thanks

Thanks for all your tips. On a cruise before Covid, we were excited about using the two fabulous water slides on our ship, but the lines were always really long. When we got to the ship's private island (which we had been to before), we did some quick fun things, then ran back to the ship. There was no one on the ship, so we got to do the slides 12 times with no waiting! We quit when our legs were too tired to climb the steps anymore. Then we had a nice quiet lunch.

I use the gallon zip lock bags while I am packing, like for underwear, stockings, bras, etc. This helps in the packing process once I remove the air from the zip lock bags, makes more room in my suitcase for other things. Has I change out of my underwear and other things I place the dirty ones into a zip lock bag (no confusion between what is clean or not). When I am packing to leave the ship on disembarkment day, all my dirty stuff like personal items are already in the zip lock bag and does not mingle with the rest of my clothes in my suitcase. I also take a photo of all of my luggage after it is packed and before we leave in case it gets lost I have a photo to show the people looking for it. I also take photos of our parking space that we leave our car in. On our last cruise the luggage for our family was the colors: Lime Green, Royal Blue, Magenta and Bright Orange. Best tip I found from my parents that live in Australia and aren’t used to tipping. As soon as you get on board go to the customer service desk and ask them to remove the automatic gratuity from your account. Instead in the day before your cruise ends have an envelope with a card or note with a cash tip to give to your wait staff &/or cabin steward. The automatic gratuity goes directly to the cruise line & not the employees that personally served you.

We boarded at 1pm and our checked luggage did not make it to our room until 6pm. I changed twice during this time frame. My friend was livid as this has never happened to her before, so she had nothing to change into 😵. Two more great tips were the extra outlets and the magnetic hooks. LIFESAVERS!!! I loved your tip about the magnets & magnet hooks, that would help a lot. I take a travel clothesline to hang in the bathroom in case you need to hang up items you hand washed or bathing suit. 2. I take a cloth napkin that is solid & in pale colors to spread on a table to be a catch all for earrings, sunglasses, wallets & your key card. It helps things stay visible (that’s why you don’t use a white one) it keeps everything in one place so you don’t leave them when the cruise is over. 3. I always wear my snug fitting outfits at the beginning of the cruise because I always gain a few pounds on the longer cruises 😀

I organize items in separate zip-lock bags (make-up in one, night skin care routine in another, etc.) I store them all in one bag for packing in suitcase but then put each separate bag where they will be used (night skin care in bathroom, make-up in drawer in room, etc)
makes it so much easier to use instead of having to find each item randomly pack all together in a bag. I use one drawer to organize first aid kit, manicure set, gum, sanitizer wipes, sprays, masks, etc that are all in separate bags so they are easy to find and everyone knows where they are. For the items that don't fit in the drawer I buy folding storage box at the dollar store. It's lightweight, pull it apart and slide the cardboard bottom into place. Store it on one of the shelves and keep the bags of goodies in it. I keep our wallets, passports, keys in a plastic bag in the safe, plus I always keep our medications in plastic bags stored in the safe and toothbrushes in UV storage container (you just never know). I make colored photo copies of our passports, drivers license, and credit cards (front and back of each one) and carry the copies with me when we leave the ship. I keep copies at home and hidden in another place in our cabin. When arriving in the cabin I use hospital grade wipes and wipe everything down..clean the usual places everyone does, but also wipe all the door pulls, closet door pulls (amazingly disgusting), light switches, safe number pads, refrigerator door, table, chairs, any place people touch that aren't usually cleaned. I'm a medical professional so I see and know places that most people don't think of besides the normal everyday places that are cleaned. I bring hand sanitizers with me everywhere and use them after holding menus, elevator buttons, sitting down and adjusting chairs (again, places you touch that everyone touches and isn't cleaned) I bring plastic gloves(dollar store) that are clear plastic bag type that I wear in buffets so I don't touch the same spoon everyone else does. I've even spooned out food for the people beside me as when they see me using them they don't want to touch the spoons either. They all say they never thought how germy they can be (not everyone washes their hands after using the bathroom, touching places on their face, hair and who know where else) and I don't want to have their germs on my hands right before I eat. We have been on 39 cruises and have never gotten sick. We were on one ship that the Norwalk virus hit and we did not get it. Take a microbiology class and you will understand why I am so careful.

Don't put in daily meds, relabel with which kind is in each compartment: Tylenol, Pepto, Dramamine, etc each get their own section. This takes so much less space! I will say though - check with your cruise line first since some may not be ok with the pills not being in their original containers.

Just don't try to take food in ziplocks into Mexico. It will be confiscated. You can take food if it is in the factory container unopened, such as potato chips, corn chips, etc. Your kitty treats can go in, as long the package is still sealed when you get off the ship. Then you can open and give to the kitties when off.

More great tips! I'm a cruiser and definitely do most of these. I love packing cubes and use the compression cubes. They really help with creating more space in your bag. Just remember to check the bag weight. They also help with packing/unpacking/organization. Also I tend to use ginger for tummy issues but will now make sure to also grab a couple of green apples! If you use a flat iron for your hair you can also use it to 'iron' your clothes. Most cruise lines allow them.

Giant Zip-Lock style garment bags. You roll them to get the air out and your clothes take a small fraction of the space and don't wrinkle. Put your dirty laundry into the bag and keep it rolled up to use less space. Bonus tip: Toss in a silica gel pack with your clothes. Discard the gel pack before you leave. This will remove much of the moisture absorbed into your clothes visiting the tropics and save a surprising amount of weight in your luggage.

Therefore, the shoe organizer did not work for the bathroom. So, I used the magnets to hang it on the wall of our state room. It held all of our meds. I also made up a checklist of everything I would ever need, items I use on a daily basis at home, then delete off depending on the. Vacation I’m taking. I also like to pre-research the ports, figure out what I want to do, how much time I should spend at any one place, how I’m going to get there, etc. I know it sounds like a lot but all this pre work saves me time from getting anywhere then wasting time trying to figure out what I want to do. I'm planing a first solo cruise. I like some if the tips you talked about. I do agree packing cubes are the best. I have a set I bought like 20 years ago and I never travel without them. I will look I to the towel clips, magnetic hooks and extra outlet. Thanks for the tips.

This was probably the best informative video I’ve ever seen. You covered absolutely everything!
I’m the Queen of lost luggage! For many years, we always do half and half. I put swimwear together though, so we are either both in the pool or not. It was a little hard the first time, but now, it’s easy.
As you, I wasn’t sure about packing cubes, now I use them all the time!
    Binoculars....for sure!!

Thank you Joyce!! It’s amazing how we can become fans of packing cubes when we never thought we needed them 😂. Love the tips - especially binoculars

great list of items to take on a cruise. One thing I didn't see mentioned was a small sewing kit. I wish I had thought of it when we took our last cruise for a minor clothing repair such as a loose button.
