  • Matt Monro sings 'Portrait of My Love' - (with lyrics)
Matt Monro was one of Britain’s most iconic singers.
He recorded the very first James Bond Theme song -‘From Russia With Love’ - represented Britain in the Eurovision Song contest in 1964 with ‘I Love the Little Things’ (in Copenhagen) - finishing second - and had many international hits which included ‘Born Free’, ‘Walk Away’, and ‘Portrait of My Love’.
Matt died on 7 February 1985 aged 54 and only 5 days after receiving a telegram from Frank Sinatra which said:
“Sorry to hear that you've taken ill and hope you'll soon be on the mend and up and about. I send you love and prayers.
    Your fellow boy singer,
    Frank Sinatra"
    Frank Sinatra said of Matt:
"His pitch was right on the nose: his word enunciation letter perfect: his understanding of a song thorough.
“He will be missed very much, not only by myself, but by his fans all over the world."

I log many miles each year traveling to and from different states in my profession. I discovered Matt Monroe many years ago while listing to Born Free, His voice immediately brought chills to my spine, it was so perfect and clear.
Listing to Matt Monroe's version of Portrait of My Love is like living in a past musical era when singers painted a picture of what they were singing.
He was such a young singer to leave us at a very young stage of his career. We need more singers like Matt Monroe nowadays, the world is in a horrible state.

Anyway, here's some trivia about Connery as James Bond, in general, and FRWL, in particular, hat I've read in the past. As far as I know, Bianchi spoke no English. She learned her lines phonetically, and did a very good job of it, IMO. Also, Connery had a small part in the movie "The Longest Day". He asked the director to shoot his scenes early since he had to go straight to Jamaica to begin filming "Dr. No". Also, Ian Flemming did not initially want Connery in that role. His preference was David Niven. However, after he got to know SC and saw him in the scenes, he realized SC was just the guy to play JB. My Granpa was the same he passed away back in 1979 but on Sundays after dinner he would put Matt Monroe on the record player and sing along convinced he was the better singer lol the family used to crease up and by the way he wasn't better no one was maybe Nat King Cole but no one else

Aw that's a lovely memory David. So like mine, Staying the weekend with them, roast dinner and maybe an Elvis movie then the record player came out. My Gramps was in a swing band in the war, he really did though believe Matt Monroe to be the best singer ever. It takes me right back to hear this song.
