I have asked my OBGYN to prescribe me progesterone once I deliver to avoid PPD as I had it severely in a past pregnancy. She said she will order the cream from a special pharmacy. Is the progesterone cream as effective as the pill?

Honestly, progesterone in a cream form is not my favorite. For PPD, the most important part of progesterone is something called a "metabolite." That's what happens when progesterone goes through your mouth, then your stomach, then your liver. The metabolite is what actually makes a difference in depression and anxiety, both post-partum and in menopause. If you use a cream on the skin, that whole process just doesn't happen. The commercially available drug I mentioned in this video (Zulresso®) is extremely expensive. But it's also EXACTLY the same as the metabolite of progesterone that you only really get when you take it orally.

    Hi Dr

Also-about how long to feel and see results?

    • @SimpleHormones

Progesterone 200MG is a reasonable dose. Might take as long as a week. If you don’t start feeling better, talk with your provider, who may increase the dose.

Thank you so much for responding. It’s so hard to find any information about this. My doc that prescribed the progesterone is a hormone specialist but he doesn’t quite deal in post Partum exactly.
He had me doing 400mg but I think it was giving me too much next day drowsiness so I will do 200 tonight. How many weeks of treatment would you recommend if it was your patient?

my daughter also gets depression during pregnancy . Is there a treatment for her during her pregnancy?

    • @SimpleHormones

Depression during pregnancy is relatively complex. Several hormones may be involved, including progesterone and cortisol. Perhaps she's open to seeing a hormone specialist who may be able to help?

Progesterone is superior to Zulresso. Doctor did you know progesterone heals bipolar disorder? Through the same ALLO pathways you described in the video.
