Studio Portrait to Fine Art In Photoshop | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

  • Not every photo has to be perfect straight out of the camera. In fact, sometimes post-processing is the only way to create the look you are after. If you know your studio session is only part of the journey, getting it right for your computer should be your aim.
    In this deep dive tutorial, photographer Gavin Hoey has two fine art photo looks in mind, and both require swapping out the background in Photoshop. As Gavin explains, using a mid-grey background in the studio will make editing in Photoshop easier, just as he uses.
    Gavin Hoey goes over the first look, a simple one-light set-up using a Flashpoint XPLOR300 light and a large Glow softbox showing why real shadows on the grey background will add depth to the final photo, so he demonstrates how moving the flash will affect the shadows. After the photo session, Gavin takes you into Photoshop for a detailed walkthrough of his fine art photo editing.
    The second look starts with a two-light set-up for a shadowless background and once again Gavin moves from the studio to Photoshop. This time he shows his technique for combining a texture and a realistic background to create a second, very different-looking, fine art portrait but taken in the same studio, against the same grey background.

    In every one of your videos I learn something that I wasn't aware I was doing right or wrong. The great thing is that I get to learn from an experienced professional willing to share his knowledge (something not many photographers are willing to do).
    In this episode you show preproduction and shooting with the final image in mind, knowing that you will do post, so it is ready for post.
    Also this post was more elaborate than previous ones.
    Brilliant episode? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    When it comes to background replacement and such, I'm very inexperienced. I'm wondering why you sampled a color for her skin rather than creating a mask to just take the effect off of her altogether?

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey Před 5 měsíci +1

      A mask is the logical way to go and you're not the first (and won't be the last) to ask. The mask is a remove all tool, so yes the unwanted texture disappears but as the layer is also a color, the warm tone would disappear too. Finally the he layer blending mode is also adding contrast, so a mask would remove the local contrast. The best advice I can give you is to try the texture over any image and compare masking vs painting.

    • @gregkiserphotography
