    Sad that they had to leave so soon. If it was possible, they could’ve sent them back to EMD to resolve the noise issues, but then again PSR implementation likely made that decision insufficient since all of the ACes were sold off. Just so you know, that NBSR photo at 9:54 is an SD70M-2

    • @citxsd70m-2
      @citxsd70m-2 Před 7 měsíci +2

      @@buccaneerrailfanning1776 yeah CN had 4 ACes. You got the CN unit correct. It’s just the NBSR unit at the top middle.
      The best way to distinguish an ACe from an M-2 is the large inverter box behind the conductor side cab. The ACe would have 2 horizontal vents and the M-2 has 3 horizontal panels.
      It was probably hard to tell them apart because they’re both nearly identical, unlike their predecessors. I couldn’t even distinguish them at first myself lol

    • @decker5937
      @decker5937 Před 7 měsíci +2

      Doubt they could’ve fixed the sound issues. If they were gonna add the rubber insulation they’d have to cut through the frame of the cab (not a very easy task). NS is just now doing that with those two SD70M-2 rebuilds now, but that might not even be sufficient.

    Nice video, wish these units stayed around longer on CSX. Just one little note, CSXs weren’t AH units and UP also still let’s their thunder cabs lead. Only BNSF banned them from leading, which is why theirs never even got PTC. These units are very lesser known in the history of CSX so I’m glad to see some people acknowledging them, as they were pretty awesome

      The SD70ACE's in general have the same electronic issues that were present dating back to the SD9043MAC's and SD90MAC-H's because the same junk from Siemens was used by EMD. Siemens technology was difficult to diagnose and deal with,espiecally since it was German. The electronic cabinets actually get really hot and many of the earlier SD70ACE's didn't have insulated/isolated cabs which is why the crews hate these units. SD70ACE's also get more traction motors replaced than most other EMD units and even GE units at that. To replace inverters,unlike GE units,the entire HTC R trucks have to be disassembled which is more time and money at the shop. Alot of the cab related problems were the result of Greenbriar Berkshire (EMD's short lived parent company at the time) cutting down costs as much as possible before CAT/PRLX took over EMD. The SD90MAC's and SD70ACE's with the problems that arised during and after production are what truly brought down EMD after it was a slow decline for many years when GP40-2 & SD40-2 production was discontinued.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid Před 19 dny

      Union Pacific is the only railroad that still owns their 90 SD70ACE-T4's. CSX sold their 10 ST70AH-T4's to PRLX and have ended up on leasing to Ferromex with the rest of the other SD70ACE-T4's...Good riddance. The SD70ACE-T4's were actually built in rivalry to the ET44AH's,not the ES44C4's that BNSF owns. Regardless,the SD70ACE-T4's are completely useless and make any previous EMD units look like superior products (Minus the SD9043MAC's & SD90MAC-H's). CAT/PRLX right now has the SD70H demonstrator which is literally a hybrid variant of the SD70ACE-T4 but I'm sure it will also fail. EMD never made a solid recovery since the SD90MAC's. Both the SD70ACE-T4's and ET44AH's actually consume more fuel than any tier three or even tier two units,both EMD and GE. EGR is to blame rather than DEF. The only reason why the railroads took interest in the tier four units was because of tax write off's. Obviously any of them have figured out that certain older units don't need to be adhered to modern EPA regulations which is why there has been a good amount of rebuilds for both EMD and GE units.

  • @speedymouse2859
    @speedymouse2859 Před 7 měsíci

    EMD introduced the isolated cab for the SD70ACe in late 2006/early 2007 due to the 'Thundercab' reputation and the non-iso cabs haven't been seen since on new build ACes, it was never just limited to the -P4.

    Absolute shitboxes. I always liked the looks of the SD70ACe when I was a kid, but in the past 15 years working on them I’ve come to realize they’re poor locomotives compared to their GE counterparts, whether referring to reliability or comfort. When they’re happy and healthy they’re good pulling units, but they’re mostly cantankerous pieces of shit.
