Ujoint vs CV joint axles

  • As with the Cardan joint, the effective life of a CV joint will be shortened as joint angles increase. While equalization of joint angles is still important, it is less of a concern for CV joints by their nature. ... This is where wide-angle Constant Velocity joints shine

You can grease cv joints if you take off the band and use a gear worm clamp to hold it back down, just make sure it won't hit anything when it spins.

This is where the old landrovers had it going on. They had big CVs... and they ARE greaseable.

My 98 ZJ was/is stock U-joint. Its a rare thing for ZJs as I found this last year looking for new ones and finding new front axles was difficult. Even strolling through the junk yards only about 15% of the ZJs had u-joints but still some do.

I've got a 96 ZJ 4.0 that has u-joints but I'm swapping the front end which has CV. The front end was out of a 98 with the V8. I think I'm going to stick with the U-joints though. This vid really helped me out. Thanks!

  • @bobbysenterprises3220

I'm thinking about doing this. In over 15 years of having TJ's it's rare I get more than a couple of years out of my front joints. It's mostly an on road commuter with 31s but no matter what quality I put in them the crappy NY roads and salt slop destroys them. Usually not even able to get them to take grease after only a year

  • @extremereclusefallows5779

These universal joints are not to replace a front wheel drive CV shaft? Only a 4 wheel drive on the front end?

I'm looking for a manufacturer or shop that would make "retractable axles, " with "U" or combination with "CV" joints?
At some point the axle would have to lift up and bring in the wheel / retract the wheel.
Thanks to you or anyone that would be able to help me.

I have an 09 tundra and i replaced an original cv. But my concern is the bellows. If they get hit by chance and tear then replace. I seen the split boots but scepticul. You seen anyone change to ujoint?

  • @jhoncho4x4
    @jhoncho4x4 Před rokem +1

If boot has a hole anyways, a syringe pop in tip for grease gun is available, to add fresh grease. Don't add too much; will come out at high speeds, along with any water.
Best to try and replace or patch the boot, after it's dry.
I ripped them alot, running rzr on trails.
Air hammer could pop axle shaft from cv, to split and get new boot and clamps on.
A spring wire clip went around axle in a groove and cv hole, popped onto axle shaft with spring clip inside machined grooves of axle and cv.
Not sure if cherokee's can split that easy or not; new to cherokees and researching.
Relieved to hear the cv is at least equal to the U-joint design.

Correct me if I'm wrong but u said ujoint style will fit in grand Cherokee but I've heard u cannot swap from Cherokee to the grand Cherokee with verilok cuz Cherokee is a 1"-2" to short so it won't go in far enough to lock the splines in

That sounds like the wj axle vs zj axle. Wj axles are a couple inches wider. Xj and zj are the same.

  • @eliinthewolverinestate6729

CV take more abuse on turning and putting power to it. A ujoint will take more abuse on straight a ways where your jumping on it or down shifting. It depends on how you drive. I have need for CV around here in dd due to amount of turns. But in a trail rig I would run ujoints for 4wd crawling without a bunch of sharp turns. Zj have different wheel bearing depths for rotors to work. Also the turn stops on the axles. A ujoint hub will have turn stops. A CV axle may not have turn stops.

Front tires “hop” in 4 wheel in a turn because the two front tires turn at different rates in a turn. Not because a u-joint binds. Proof? Take out of 4 wheel drive and turn... No hop? U-joints are still turning and binding (unless you had un-locking hubs, but you don’t). Just an FYI. Have a good one!

rubbish, never had u joints hop..only way they do that is if your limiting bolt is too far in. as mine was on an f100 lwb, the guy did it so he could park it easy. hell of a turning circle, but hopped in 4x4..i fixed it. never shit a uni. ..uni,$26. 1.5 hrs to replace. cv $250 +-. chevy,s come with 4 spare,in the tray.. cv,s have allways been crap..

@@silver3157 No one does a conversion, you need to find one that is compatible with your rig and just swap them. There is no converting an axle between the two, just changing them out completely.

Did you do any research before hitting the record button?
CV Joints are stronger, can handle more torque, last longer and vibrate less than U-Joints.
