Pickaroon Hookaroon [Lost Tools]

  • In this video, we take a look at a traditional logging tool, a Pickaroon/Hookaroon. I talk about the history of my pickaroon and how to use them.
    A pickaroon (or picaroon) is a wood-handled (may be other materials also), metal-topped log handling tool. It is distinguished from a pike pole by having a shorter handle, no metal point, and an opposite curve to its hook (toward the handle rather than away); and from both a cant hook and peavey by having a fixed hook facing its handle rather than a pivoting one facing away.
    A pickaroon with a down-turned point on its hook is known as a sappie or hookaroon, one with an axe blade opposite its' hook is an axaroon, eliminating the need to carry two tools to manage logs.
    In the video I move a large pile of firewood using the tools and loading on to my trailer.
    Cheers!

    From one old man to another. LOL Thank you for the video, I enjoyed the demonstration. I will finally be putting a handle on my hookaroon head. Saved it from a thrift shop in a logging town some years ago. Using it will save alot of time and pain.

      Sounds awesome! I wish I could find an old one in a second hand shop! maybe I should take a trip to the States... I think I would need more than a suitcase to get all my souvenirs back though!
      Thanks for watching! Cheers!

    Nice demo. Thanks. I just ordered my 1st hookaroon (my lower back is killing me in my elder years) even though I always knew about this logging tool all my life ; I always thought this tool was for wimps. I'm afraid I may have waited too long to get one. - N Idaho -

    Great video! I love historic tools. Keep the videos coming! (Side note: I have a couple of hookaroons. They work great in lighter, softer woods, but not so well with hard and heavy oaks, etcetera; at least in my experience. Nevertheless, as I said, they work great for me in pine and softer hardwoods).

    Dislodging the firewood round is easier with a pickaroon rather than a hookaroon due to the straight point. Now for some odd reason I want a macaroon...... LOL

    Wish I'd known about these when I was working on farm years ago,spent a lot of time felling/logging in winter and would have saved my back a lot😟still do a bit of firewood and also now blacksmithing/metalworking so will be making some of these,maybe one with axe blade on one side😉😉

    Thanks for the video I've got a pickaroon but rarely use it and didn't even know it was called a pickaroon. It doesn't go into the wood as easily as yours though so maybe I need to give it a tickle with a file to sharpen it

    Someone on CZcams actually knows the difference in a pickaroon/hookaroon/axearoon. I would like a axearoon, but haven't been able to find one. Heck, I have been trying to find someone that could forge one.

    • @chanmang
      @chanmang Před 2 lety +1

      I have found multi purpose tools always sacrifice function for convenience. For instance you can't move around as freely if you have two sharp bits. You also want as little weight as possible for a tool of mobility

    • @Gideon_Judges6
      @Gideon_Judges6 Před rokem +1

      @@chanmang yeah they were really designed as s compromise if you're carrying things out to the field. Two heads, one handle = less weight and less cumbersome but also means if you just break one handle then both tool heads are down.

    Must have not made it to south west Australia. Seems strange. Guess I'll just have to make one
