395. Narrowboat DIY Hull Blacking
Vložit
- čas přidán 18. 04. 2024
- Every three years or so, a narrowboat needs to be taken out of the water to have its hull ‘blacked’, this being necessary to preserve the steel work, particularly along the water line. I last blacked my boat in April 2021, so it’s time to be re-done and on this occasion, I’m grateful for Sally’s help. In this episode, the boat is taken out of the water using an hydraulic trailer, pressure washed, part blacked and then moved on to the hardstand for the real challenge to commence. This is not intended as an instructional video.

Hi i was thinking time has gone but with Sally help made It easier take care and bye for now
Hi Joanne, I hope you're keeping well, it was great to have Sally's company and help. All the best, take care.
Best you hang on to your Sally as she is doing a top job there. I'm sure you bought her a few cakes and teas as compensation for her hard work.
Hi Brian, we look after each other very well thank you. It was great to have Sally’s company and help.
I remember the last time you blacked your boat seems like it was just last week. Good days work, well done. Hi Sally
I agree, it doesn’t seem long ago, it was good to have Sally’s help on this occasion. Thanks for your comment, Alan and Sally.
It doesn't feel like it has been so long since the blacking was done, Alan, but in all fairness, the years do go past as quickly as do the age we get. You've made a good deck hand of Sally, giving her a task of responsibility and enabling her to feel more at home and some self experience she will need to use once she has her own boat to tend to. Well done Sally, it is good to see you muck in and help Alan out. Big high 5 to you girl. 🖖
I agree with you, at least it’s now done again for the next three years. Sally was a great help not only with the painting but great company as well, good at tea making. All the best, Alan and Sally 😃
I find the small foam paint rollers from Wikes don't fall off the inner plastic core when using solvent paints. The ones that a well known chandlers sell unfortunately do, very quickly. Looking forward to the next episode.
Hi Simon. My paint rollers come from various sources, some I have from years ago but I’ve never bought them from a chandlers. It’s worth knowing the Wickes ones are good. All the best.
Hi Alan and Sally what a great job, it’s not easy when weather so fickle, but you did great. Have great week 😊
The gland packing should have 2 or 3 drops per minute of water. I've changed quite a few on pumps in the past. Also, look out for packing next time you are at a steam pumping station. 👋
Hi Sandy, thanks for watching, you too have a good week ahead. All the best, Alan and Sally🤠
Evening Alan and Sally, I must say that I admire you both for taking on the job yourselves, especially in such unpredictable weather. The job so far is shaping up really nicely and bravo for inspecting the packing. Fascinating and enjoyable to watch, hope you both had a good laugh along the way. Many thanks for sharing...🍷🍷
Evening Steve. I did it by myself three years ago, so it was great to have help and company. I booked it in months ago, so took a chance on what the weather would be. We always have good fun together. Glad you enjoyed watching, all the best 🥂
I take my hat off to you and Sally for taking on such a task Alan. There is so much work involved to keep your boat in order . The weather certainly didn’t help you. Have a lovely weekend.
Thank you Mark, it was good to have Sally’s company and help this time round. There’s always something to be done. You too have a great weekend.
that bit about the stern gland is so so helpful! I've hired many boats & asked people what it does but nobody has explained it as clearly as you have. I'm one of those annoying people that want to know the ins & outs so thank you for that! Hello to Sally! Bye for noooooow! :D Claire xx
Hi Claire. One aspect of the stern gland that I chose not to mention, is whether it should drip or not, as boaters have varying views on that topic. Mine tends to drip, which I think it should but sometimes it doesn’t, which I find rather odd. All the best, take care, Alan and Sally x
I would have used a 80 grit first to get the rust off and really get the gloss off the paint and then the 120 grit to finish off but you must do what you think is best Alan. Good job ❤
Hi Martin. Thanks for your advice. I didn’t research what I’ve done before but I think 80 would have been too harsh for my paintwork. There’s no real rust on my boat, I don’t seem to get the same issues I see on other boats. All that matters to me, is that I’m happy with it! And I am 😃 Cheers
Thanks Alan for this very interesting vlog it definitely doesn't seem like three years ago since you last did the blacking. Yourself and Sally are doing a brilliant job but shame about the weather. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Hi Stevie, it's surprising where the time has gone. I t was lovely to have Sally's company and help, the weather was against us but we got done what we wanted to. Best wishes, take care.
Well done to you both on a difficult job, good video Alan, happy cruising. my wife and i love your video's.
Thank you very much Dougie to you and yours for your appreciation. Alan and Sally.
Nice vlog ,you made boat blacking a bit more interesting, like the plaque for your boat.😊
Many thanks Robert, I’m pleased you found it entertaining 👍
You have done a fine job Allen! Very interesting watching this process of up keep of your floating home.Great to see you again. We are checking in. Cheers Allen from Tammy and Glen of creative artist2🤗🙋♀🙋♂
Hi Tammy and Glen, lovely to hear from you again, I hope you are both keeping well. Glad you enjoyed watching, all the best, take care🤠
I hope you picked up a new roller when you went to get more primer. It's so hard to do that work without good tools. Lovely video though and I am so glad you have Sally to help. Good double act there!
Hi Justine, I didn't need to go for primer, and I already had a 9" quality roller and sleeve, so all was well. It was great having Sally to help me. Thanks for commenting, all the best, take care.
Hi Alan,Sally & Reggie. Good to see the blacked work again Alan sad about the weather but hope Thursday & Friday are better.
Good to see Sally helping & doing an amazing job. Take care & look after your selves. 🍻🥂
Hi Bob, all turned out well in the end, thanks. It was great having Sally for company and to assist in the hard work. Now done for another three years. All the best, take care.
Hi guys
You are doing a good job shame about the weather but will be looking good when finished
Take care and stay safe 👍👍
Thank you Ronald, we managed to get the job done, so all is good. You’ll see more in the next episode. All the best🤠
Wow. I can’t believe 3 years has gone past since you last shared this with us. Enjoying watching the video as I type!! Thanks Alan. All the best to you both.
It’s surprising how quickly the time has gone, I’m pleased you’re finding it of interest. Thanks for watching, all the best.
Enjoyed it Alan. Regards from Chester.
Many thanks Philip, have a great weekend.
Nice 1 Alan and Sally…
Thank you so much.
Hi Alan, good to see you looking after your boat and that you had some help this time around 👍 those rollers were a bit annoying, not sure what you can do to stop them coming off. Maybe a big brush would work better for you as you mentioned it gave good coverage. The tunnel stripe hadn’t weathered too well either, hope it cleans up and repaints ok. Have a good week and hope the weather is kind so you get done in time 👍
Hi Paul, you’ll see the change of tools in the next episode, right along the lines you suggest. It was great having Sally with me for support and hands on help. You’ll soon see the end results. Cheers, all the best.
So enjoyable video...keep up your good reports....stay warm out there !!!!
Thank you Jim, glad you enjoyed watching. Not been too cold fortunately.
Great job , Hope the rain hasn't damaged the new paint.😮😊
Thanks Chris, all is good with the paintwork thanks 🤠
@MyNarrowboatVenture have a nice weekend both of you. 🙂
@@christopherbutler7588 Many thanks, you too.
We're in the same process on our 59' nb. After pressure washing, we went over everything with scrapers, and used an electric drill with a brass brush to clean off any rust, and applied Fertan. Once that dries, tomorrow we wash off the Fertan, let it dry, then roll on the blacking.
The longer the boat, the harder it is. I did a lot of scraping and brushing last time but the Marina has a more powerful washer now, which got any loose stuff off. Just one small area where perhaps I should have scraped. Fortunately, no rust to treat. I have used Fertan, as it was recommended, but having to wash it off is a real bind. I can strongly recommend Vactan, which doesn’t need washing off. As it is applied, you can virtually see it doing good, you need to see it, to believe it but well worth considering for the future. I wish you well with the blacking.
Alan buy good quality rollers & I would think that sponge is not the correct one for blacking (?) as once it is one them they will become very heavy (hence they want to slip off)
Keep the L shape pointing up as well if possible so should it want to slide it will slide down.
I would be inclined to also (as you saw) use a good quality selection of brushes of varying sizes as a bigger brush will make short work along those flat sides.
As others have said 80 grit to quickly deal with the rust before moving up.
Thanks for your advice. I agree with all your comments but there’s no rust and as I painted the boat, I feel that 80 would be too harsh. In the next episode you’ll see a quality 9” hairy Harris roller sleeve on a different frame, which worked a treat. My natural wrist movement means sometimes the roller sleeve is ‘facing down’ it just happens, but again I agree with what you say. I use a mix of cheap and quality brushes, the cheap ones get chucked and the better ones cleaned for re-use. Cheers, thanks for commenting.
Hi Alan, you do know how to show a girl a good time!😂
Hi Neil, I do my best to keep Sally happy😅
It certainly doesn’t seem 3 years since you did the blacking last. Doesn’t time go by quickly Alan 👍
I feel the same, at least it’s done now, still need to paint the sides but not rushing to do that. Cheers🤠
3 years wow where does the time go Alan, wishing you both good health still enjoying the channel keep it going loving your videos .
It’s surprising isn’t it, at least it’s done now. Thanks for your ongoing support and encouragement, all the best.
Looks like you are doing a great job in poor conditions. I was worried about the blacking sticking to the hull in the cooler weather. Lots of hard back breaking labor. Hats off to another old guy showing how its done.
Thanks for your great comment, it’s bituminous paint, so it sticks well. The weather wasn’t too kind to us but we managed to do what we wanted. Thanks for the appreciation …. Old! Cheers.
@@MyNarrowboatVenture I am in my 70s but I can't group you with all the other kids. Maybe I should use "mature"
@@lesmumford8426 I wasn't in any way offended, my Old! was a bit tongue in cheek but it is correct! I like mature though. Cheers, all the best.
Nice bit of smooth funk intro going on there, Alan. Nice!
Glad you liked it, cheers🤠
i am on this chore this month
And a chore it is, hope all goes well for you.
Nice one Alan where is Neil tractor driver hope he's well 👍
Neil’s fine thanks, Gary tends to deal with the slipway work. Cheers
Pressure washing with no eye protection, a braver man than me.
I spotted that, suppose there’s no direct kick back.
He was jet blasting away from himself and at other times he stepped back so not a novice
@@kenduke4888 I'm confident he knows what he's doing.
Pretty well all paint rollers I have ever had have been, what's the best word, rubbish!
It’s a good word but it does get better in the next episode, both handle and roller, all 9 inches of them!
I might have missed it. Where are you getting the electric from?
From an electric bolllard by the corner of the large shed, which is not generally in view.
THE ROLLERS ARE CRAP FOR SURE BUT THERE NOT MADE TO HQNDLE THE PRESSURE YOUR APPLIYING YOUR THERE JUST NOT MADE TO HANDLE BIG GUYS .
I subsequently used a wider, better quality roller and sleeve, which worked fine.
