She just saw one guy an intend to drag him into the water to eat him, but when she caught him the boulders fall onto them at the same time. So, yeah, it was all acidental.

The moment he’s dragged out of the way, she lets go and goes to leave, only to get stuck. Anybody could see that she was caught by the debris facing the other direction, as if she were leaving, not facing him, as if she were going to kill him.

In the movie one sailor says that a kiss from a mermaid saves a person of drowning, so she kissed him and now the both can breathe underwater. At the end of the movie she kisses him so he can breath underwater and is now capable of living in the sea with her...
