  • We are self-driving from Mombasa to Nairobi, only taking dirt roads and avoiding National Parks. It is a hell of an adventure!
    We want to drive off-road through the bush, taking small dirt roads and enjoying the wildness of Kenya. We don't have to wait long to see our first animals, and all this game drive outside National Parks!
    After some beautiful wild camp in the bush in the middle of Kenya, we continue towards Mt Kilimanjaro. We get in contact with locals and head later towards Amboseli Lake/Amboseli National Park.
    And here things turn difficult in many ways. Hope you enjoy this video as much as we enjoyed this journey through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Kenya.
    Until then, enjoy the ride!

      Yes, we know, but not only we think the prices are too high for self drivers, but also these parks have at the moment massive tourism. Where at times there are more safari cars than animals. We don't want to promote this kind of business. Kenya and Tanzania should reconsider their strategy, and maybe learn more from other southern Africa countries. Let me know your thoughts about this!!

    It's Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The guys who ask you for money do not have proper food or shelter (basic needs) whilst for you guys those are guaranteed so you seek personal fulfilment. You cannot expect that money takes away from a genuine experience because this is reality. This is as genuine as it gets!

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  Před 3 měsíci

      Hey! Thank you for your comment. But I have to disagree. The people that asked for money have their basic needs met. We met them personally, saw where they live and the type of life they have. Of course there are regions where this is not true. For example north of Uganda, the Karamoja, there is a food crisis. Generalizing about this, doesn't help those in real need.
      The people we talk about in this video, many of those are used to see tourists that come with lots of money to spend in Safaris, we are talking thousands of dollars. And that find it good to hand out money to the kids they see on the side of the road as they go from National Park to National Park. No information about their livelihoods, just easy to give and feel better about themselves!
      I believe if you want to give, get informed about what is being done in those communities, how you can help personally and stay away from savior like mindset.
      I think it's ok to disagree and you do you, but for us, after seeing how charity works in many parts of Africa, we believe a change of mindset is needed.
      Africa doesn't need saving! Africa doesn't need exploiting!

  • @emmanuelmakolo2888
    @emmanuelmakolo2888 Před rokem +4

    The problem with being a tourist is that you don’t take time to study the different cultures you will encounter. In many African cultures you leave a gift when you visit a home and they will also give you a gift to go away with. Most people from the west are quick to give money so that has changed the people and they now think it is a right. In the past many foreigners have also taken advantage of the locals to make money using photographs and videos like the one you are making.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  Před rokem

      Hi Emmanuel! You are so right! I think we don't stay long enough in a region to deeply understand this. We stayed in other countries longer and it was easier, for example in Iran is also normal to bring a gift or food when invited home, and so we did as we were able to spend time with Iranians. In this part of Kenya we spent some days only and we did not have anything with us to bring as gift to the family. We were able to talk to the women of the family , talk about our differences, the values in both cultures and present the way we travel. We took care that they wouldn't feel we were trespassing their privacy, and that's why you don't see any footage of their private house (even if they showed us). We will keep on learning and taking care as we move forward. Thank you for your comment :)

    Money is sweet if asked by any European (which they do quite frequently) but bad if any African asks the same. {Long back in Paris I asked a gentleman the direction for Notre Dame Church and he demanded service fees}

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  Před 2 měsíci

      I believe that once one asks for a service and gets the help, the person is entitled to ask for money. Everything else is either charity or donation. Here in your example you are talking about two different scenarios. We never asked for help in Kenya, but still we got asked for money. This is not something we only experienced in Kenya , but all over the world, including Europe! We are not against donations. I believe there are instances where this is necessary, but it needs to be done purposely (emergency example)and knowing the long-term impact by being actively involved in the project. All this I am saying applies to any continent!

  • @Sonkoloo
    @Sonkoloo Před rokem +1

    I love you're videos, very inspiring, but as a kenyan would differ with you abit.Most of those kids beg because it's the foreigners who used to give money and handouts to these kids.Especially while growing up i used to see foreigners giving money and food to street kids.foreigners would also make videos of such villages and request for funding to help alleviate challenges, for example drilling boreholes and so on.Again in african culture i find it weird that most people don't respect our culture. Them allowing you to camp there was a good gesture that they had good motives.So don't get emotional. Then you have the option of not giving. Just understand it's because such areas have a lot of NGO activities going on.but i like your content. Raw.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  Před rokem +1

      You are so right!! It is sad to see how westerners and western society has impacted many African countries, from foreigners giving handouts during their holidays( because is "easy') to funding NGOs as the unique solution for problems we, westerners, don't understand(at least in the long term). In all these months in the continent we have not given anyone money to kids or people on the street. Even gifts, cloths and so on. We don't. We don't want to perpetuate the idea, the white people, the foreigners,are coming here to give money. How we got around it? With patience and nice words. Several times it got a bit tense(in the Karamoja, Uganda). But then we shared our breakfast with them, but this is not different as we would do with anyone that stop to have a conversation. We read a line that stuck with us, and we stand by it: Africa doesn't need aid, Africa needs trade. Sad that many governments in Africa, Europe, America and now Asia are more interested in just taking,rather than trading.😵

We tank normally in bigger towns (big brands) and then we have enough for about 1000km (we have an extra fuel tank). Regarding the maintenance we do engine oil change every 10.000 km and we do it in workshops so we can dispose the oil in a safe place. Other maintenance tasks, we do them ourselves on the road.
