  • We are exploring the Karamoja region in Uganda, one of the least populated and most undeveloped areas of the country, and a place facing so many challenges.
    We want to explore it from the south all the way north, crossing first the Pian Upe Reserve. We were not expecting to get in such trouble, but it was all our fault. Sometimes the line between adventure and stupidity is thin, this day we crossed it.
    After getting out of trouble we continue traveling around this region and learning more about some of the challenges this region is suffering. This is a stunning area, amazing for overlanding, but if you look closer, you will realize this area is far from being a paradise.
    If you want to know more about the situation in The Karamoja and the challenges to overcome, this is a great paper by United Nations Population Fund:

    The grass is burnt as the ash provides a fertilizer and new growth is promoted by burning the grass, it’s a common practice in Africa.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  Před rokem +1

      This is the main logic behind it, but according to have read, there are several studies that say that even though you promote growth, you destroy a lot of small life (insects, microbiome int he soil) which in the long run is counterproductive and can lead to soil degradation...

    • @nqabankosi6649
      @nqabankosi6649 Před rokem

      yea its true it promotes grass growth as you say, but its also a way of flushing out pests or animals in the bush as well especially for those looking for food or for those who want to get rid of pests near their homes.

    The grass is burned because it becomes unpalatable for the animals, and the resulting regrowth is much more platatable and nutritious

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  Před rokem

      Yes, cattle prefers green new grass. But if you continue doing this practice for ever in a place (they are not moving much as before when they were nomads) then most probably you will end without top soil and no more grass would grow there. Short term solutions are sometimes the enemy of long-term success.

    Thank you for your series, just catching up, and I am sorry you are leaving Africa, RSA seemed a little rushed but security is an issue. I am an Anglo/Australian with a home in Kampala as I am married here with children. I viewed your opinion of the issues in this country with interest and agree with most. It is a blessed country, at the moment with ample rain fall and fertile soil but as you noticed, population is impacting everywhere and the environment is changing as a result. When I got married here there were 25 million, now there are 43 million and that is only 17 years! The UN are predicting 161 million by 2055. I also feel you are correct re the hand out mentality as it is something that hit me on first arrival. As a Mzungu (white) you are automatically seen as wealthy and treated as such. A lot of this steams from the vast Aid/NGO population, mostly based in Kampala/Entebbe who do have large disposable income or it is paid for by those agencies. Uganda would collapse without it. My wife often asks me what I do not like about UG, it is always the same answer, dishonesty. The country lacks any level of trust in individuals.
    I think I know where you camped with those hippos, having been to that area several times, would love to know where the series 3 is. Sorry we missed you here, there is a very vibrant Land Rover community here and a lot of interested people would of loved to of met you, but maybe that is what you are avoiding. Good luck with South America. Cheers, Jerry

      Hey Jerry! Thank you so so much for your comment! Yeah, we couldn't travel that long in South Africa, we had limited time as we stayed longer in Namibia. Uganda was beautiful but it was too many people and challenging to travel a bit relaxed. Everytime we stopped somewhere we would be a huge sensation and draw so much attention. But it was very difficult to have a 1-1 conversation with locals, we couldn't manage to talk at the same level, as there is this wall as white traveler, kind of separating both ways of living. Meeting people and having rich conversations is one of the best things while traveling and the lack of it was one of the reasons why we got burned out in Uganda. I really cannot imagine 161 million people in Uganda. It's going to get crazy. 😢 greetings from South America!

    Ihr seid sensible Reisende, was mir sehr gefällt! (Zeigt sich ja auch in Eurer Musikauswahl, die ein wohltuender Kontrast zu vielen anderen Reise-Videos ist.) Gut finde ich auch, dass Ihr Eure Gedanken und Eindrücke zur materiellen Situation vor Ort mitteilt. (Ein Blick in die Extreme der politischen Situation mit - und seit - Amin bringt da Erkenntnisse.)
    Bei der Fahrt durch die Savanne hattet Ihr Glück, denn die Gräser waren nicht ganz so trocken, dass sie sich bei der Fahrt entzünden konnten; abgesehen auch von der Motortemperatur, die Ihr sicherlich im Blick hattet.
    Wenn so eine Querfahrt nicht zu vermeiden ist, hilft - mit einigem Abstand - eine Pappe vor dem Kühler. Der Ventilator schafft die Kühlung - bei langsamer Fahrt ! - dann trotzdem.
    Übrigens: nehmt den Kaktus hinter der Scheibe weg, er könnte Euch bei unvorhersehbaren Umständen ins Gesicht fliegen.
    Wünsche Glück und Freude bei Euren Fahrten!

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  Před rokem

      Hey Roger, vielen dank für den netten Kommentar!
      Wir haben das mit der Entzündungsgefahr hier schon öfter gehört, ich bin jedoch der Meinung das das eher bei Benzinern zum tragen kommt und weniger bei Alten Dieseln. Die Verbrennung eines Diesels is wesentlich „kälter“ und auch über den Turbo verliert das Abgas nochmal ordentlich an Temperatur. Was dazu führt das der Abgasstrang nicht so heiß wird, grade bei langsamer Fahrt und niedriger Last. Wir sind trotzdem vorsichtig 😉
      Klar wir haben Kühlmittel Temperatur und Abgas Temperatur immer im Blick.
      Was die Grassamen angeht haben wir mittlerweile ein Netz für den Kühler. Funktioniert gut!
      Der Kaktus alias Beifahrer-Airbag hat schon heftige offroad Strecken mitgemacht und ist immer am Platz geblieben. Er fährt seit der Türkei mit und wir erfreuen uns sehr an ihm.
      Vielen Dank und bis bald 😊

      Keine Frage, aber es gibt leider Situationen, wo sehr plötzlich ganz andere Kräfte wirken, als nur nierensteinlockernde Offroad-Schläge! (Hier füge ich vorbeugend einige beschwörende Formeln afrikanischer Weisheit ein...) 😇

      You can buy radiator protectors that stop (most) seed/grasses collecting.Also canvas bags (full of water) which help cool the flow of air over the radiator (via evaporation of water from the canvas bag).This stuff is widely known by old Africa hands.
      George Adamson (of Born Free fame) was killed north of here by Somalian gunmen moving down from the hellhole of Somalia..(no doubt you have seen the film "The Constant Gardener",if not it might be worth doing so.

    It would appear that the people of Uganda really have no hope of bettering themselves.

    • @Thebluelandy

      The Karamoja is the example of a perfect storm. Conflict, climate change, unsustainable increase in population, unschooling, unemployment, AID programs... This area of Uganda has many challenges that are very difficult to overcome. Even in Uganda this region and the Karamojong are looked down, which doesn't helped them have any prospects outside their region. 😔

      Ouh, because we only found the path 2 hours later hahahah. We drove without seeing a path for many kilometers, following our position on Google satellite maps. So we actually never found it, cause it was all burnt away and non existing.😅

    Sorry I cannot approve. If the track disappears you turn round and go back rather than by creating environmental damage by crossing virgin savannah. I think rather less of your channel now.

    • @Thebluelandy
      @Thebluelandy  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Hey!! We could see the path the whole time on the satellite picture. And there were concrete drain tubes every 100 m. So the path was there, but it was not use for quite a while. I understand your concern about environmental impact and we also try to minimize our traces!

    Thanks for the vid. When you lost the track, why didn’t you put the drone up? You did the right thing not giving money. If you had, that might have started an expectation by the gangs that could lead to violence. 👍🏻🙏🦘

      If you mean, when the path disappeared, ouhh that would have absolutely helped! This time we didn't think about it (in Amboseli we did for example). We would have seen how everything around us was just wild 🙈 and we would not have tried... Sometimes humans do very unreasonable stuff.
