How Can Anyone Run Ape Hangers On Their Harley?

  • Years ago, when I first started riding, I thought Ape Hangers were the dumbest thing out there. It wasn't until I got my hands on a bike with apes that I finally understood why they're so popular. Here's a throw back video to way back when I had a 2011 Harley Davidson Road King Classic that came equipped with a pair of 14" ape hangers. Let's talk about why people run bars like this.

    I put 16" chubbies on my 03 Roadking a number of years back - about 70K mikes ago. Best move ever. They help with the handling of the bike, great for extended trips. Very comfortable. It was a leap of faith putting them on but I am very happy i did it.

    I've had the same experience. Hated them, talked all kinds of shit about them, ultimate poser bars, etc... Until I road a bike with them. I was IMMEDIATELY sold. Now I run them on my Road King Special 😂

    I've recently switched to apes and absolutely love them on my bike. I now believe the stock bars were absolutely wrong for my bike, like they just used the same bars they were using on other Road Star models. Up to about shoulder maybe even chin height is about comfort. Higher than that though is probably more about standing out.

    As long as they are not real high They are the most comfortable for me. I never liked whitewall tires on bikes or cars though. The first time I got new tires for my Road King (It had the stock white walls when I bought it) I got black walls and never went back.

      I'm gonna guess just below shoulder height or shoulder height bars would fit just about everyone. My riser/bar combo comes to 12 inches and it's just barely under my shoulders I think, haven't taken a side profile picture to see lol I think I'd be fine with 13inches too but idk I'm only 5'6"

    I bought my road king from a guy 6-2 with a 22 inch inseam (hairy SOB), he swore by the Ape Hangers, I took them off, I'm 6-1 with 34 inch inseam, don't miss them

    • @TheDankh
      @TheDankh Před 3 lety

      Doesn't say much, 6'1" with 34" inseam... You have absolutely no chest height, which is the opposite of the need that apes facilitate. I'm 6'3" with a 30" inseam. I sit 6" higher than you, or the equivalent to 14" to 16" apes in comparison to stock bars. Our differences in shoulder to hand distance vertically measured would be nearly the same.

    Besides the fact that after a broken arm I can't deal with higher than my shoulder bars, non standard length clutch and throttle cables and spliced in extensions for the electrics makes these mods a really bad idea in the long run.

    • @ZackBadCompany1234
      @ZackBadCompany1234 Před 3 lety

      Not really. You just get longer oem cables. And a wiring kit is simple swap now. It really does no harm to the value or reliability of the bike. As long as it's not hacked together with electrical tape and stretched cables.

    I love apes - way more comfortable for me on my Stryker. I still pull turn locked circles, and drag my floorboards with ease. In fact, talk about massive cred from other riders, when you are running a cruiser with apes and are leaning further than some sporty guys, throwing sparks in the process.

    I'm really finding the stock 12" mini apes on the iron 1200 super comfy and with my long arms I can get my arms far enough forward. I really want mx style bars but I'm scared a straight riser off the tripple tree will bring my hands to close to my chest
