Watch a Thanksgiving Day Tirade in ‘Maestro’ | Anatomy of a Scene

  • A couple reaches a heated turning point in this sequence from the biopic “Maestro,” directed and co-written by Bradley Cooper, who stars as the conductor Leonard Bernstein.
The scene takes place on Thanksgiving Day in the New York apartment of Leonard and his wife, the actress Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). Soon after Leonard enters the room, Felicia’s criticism begins. As the moment progresses, her verbal attacks increase in ferocity and speed in a way that contrasts with the relaxed pace of the Thanksgiving Day Parade floats passing just outside the couple’s windows.
“It is the scene of the film in many ways,” Cooper said in an interview. “The whole film builds to this scene and then the aftermath of it.”
Felicia realizes that the compromises she has made in their relationship have eroded her emotional state and she can no longer contain her anger. Cooper said he had envisioned the sequence in one take and knew it needed to be shot that way. But he did have concerns. “My fear was that we wouldn’t be able to maintain this frame for the entire scene. But because Carey Mulligan is such an assassin actor, it was effortless.”

This scene and all of the film, great performances. My only caveat with the entire experience was understanding some of the dialogue. Great that it was so naturally performed with correct accents however the verbal speed and talking on top of one another in inaudible tones made it difficult to grasp what was said and the continuity of the story. This happened throughout. A beautiful film, beautifully created, performed and supported with an outstanding cast including makeup, cinematography, brilliant work!! Congratulations

Nothing subtitles can’t fix with a proper at home viewing. I, like you, had the same problem understanding some of the dialogue, however I know I’ll be seeing the movie again. And in hindsight, I got the majority of what I needed to know from the first viewing.

Given the richness of Bernstein's life and the quality with which limited television series are made, this would have been a perfect story for that genre. Hinting at it was that it played like a two-part movie, not just because the first part was filmed in b&w. As long as the film was, I wanted more and there is more to tell. Bradley Cooper was brilliant in all his functions. I hope people appreciate the passion, therefore the integrity and beauty that he brings to Maestro.

i think contrary to his strained interpretation mr. cooper hit on the truth in this scene. It probably took her a long time to see clearly into his soul and what animated it. He had remarkable charm and talent which I believe he distorted. It is easy to see how a young girl would be swept up with his other persona. Many found him irresistible and young women of her time were generally quite naive.

All that Felicia asked of Leonard is that he be discreet. Yet he invited his lover to live with the family and moved in with him a year before she was diagnosed with cancer. He, therefore, was not a true artist, who are naturally acutely sensitive to emotions. His self-aggrandizement made him numb to those closest to him.

    • @bradenharris8718

Okay for one, You can be someone “naturally acutely sensitive to emotions” and STILL be selfish and not care about others wants and needs emotionally.
Because two, An artist is still human. And being artistically gifted doesn’t make you a better person, it also doesn’t make you more in-tune with emotions although you seem to think it does which is just silly.
Ever notice that someone truly gifted in something usually suffer in their personal life? Yeah, there’s a reason for that

I posted a video about Leonard Bernstein on my CZcams channel that documents what he was really doing on stage as a conductor. There's a phenomenon in the press where they pick 2 or 3 classical musicians and designate them as SACRED COWS. No matter what the sacred cows do on stage, the press refers to it as "the greatest." Bernstein was one of those sacred cows. The television appearances he did show him adding trumpets to the orchestra with Beethoven's symphonies and then when asked about Beethoven's ability to orchestrate, he says, " IT'S BAD! HE HAS THE TRUMPETS STICKING OUT AND THEY'RE DROWNING OUT EVERYBODY ELCE." My video points out many of his scams.
