The cathedral scene did not feature Bernstein's music. It was Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2. Bernstein was a celebrated interpreter of Mahler's music. I find it fascinating that two major Hollywood movies about conductors chose to prominently feature a Mahler symphony, as _Tár_ heavily incorporated Mahler's 5th into its plot.
The parallels between Mahler and Bernstein are very interesting as well - Mahler was both a conductor and composer, but had a relatively limited output compared to many of his contemporaries. In his time, both his compositions and his conducting style were criticized or even laughed at for being too showy/flamboyant/maximalist (for example, in this cartoon en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mahlercartoon_1907.jpg). And though I don't know anything about Mahler's sexuality, he grew up Jewish in 1800s central Europe, and anti-Semitism persistently plagued his public life even after he eventually converted to Catholicism. He frequently composed pieces with overtly Christian narratives (including the Resurrection symphony shown in Maestro), but would sometimes thread Jewish/Yiddish musical styles into his works.
I doubt these parallels played a direct part in Cooper's choice to include a Mahler piece, though it's certainly possible that they influenced the real Bernstein's interest in Mahler. In any case - as previously stated, Mahler's music was not especially well-received during his lifetime, and was banned in Nazi Germany due to Mahler's Jewish heritage. One of Bernstein's most important contributions as a conductor was helping to revive Mahler's legacy through live & recorded performances, and I do think Cooper including a Mahler piece in the film is a great way to honor that contribution.
And actually Birdman profoundly featured Mahler's 9th as a significant morality muse .

There are times when Bradley Cooper’s face looks positively demonic in this film. Really quite scary. He reminded me of the hobo behind the diner in Mulholland Drive, just a bit cleaner.

Rami Malek is such a strange actor. I’ve never seen a movie where I’m like “oh thank GOD Rami Malek is in it!” Everything I’ve seen him in I’m like: oh…it’s Rami
He is a very good actor. His small role in Oppenheimer was great, but his performance in Mr. Robot and even The Pacific are much better representatives of his talent.

Bradley Cooper was at the screening of this movie I saw and he explained pretty well why he jumped around so much and it really made me change my opinion about how the film was structured. He said when it was being written they quickly realized that anything that did not have to do with Felicia and Leonards marriage had to go. Knowing this it really helped me see that the film isnt really a biopic at all and that it is focused but not on his life but their relationship. Also because of how the film ends Felicia is really the star here for me and in some ways from her perspective. The shot with her in his shadow summerizes that for me. Just some thoughts, curious to see how it does in awards!
Of course it's a biopic; he's playing Leonard Bernstein. Yes, Felicia's very important. But the picture was made because of Leonard Bernstein.

Having studied with Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood in 1985 and also being a scholar of Mahler, this film and Cooper's portrayal was so intense, my first viewing of the film left me anxious that I'd melt into a puddle of emotion. It was so spot-on, so intense, so authentic, I was there with Lenny.
And let me tell you... the conducting was absolute and so damn hard to do. There's never been such an authentic conducting performance by an actor on film. I've performed for Bernstein, Ozawa and many others - and this just isn't something you can hack over 2-3 months and execute.
Cooper really wants that Oscar. Felt lil too on the nose. Only saving grace was Carey Mulligan’s performance.

why did they make him look like Bela Lugosi??? Sorry, I couldn't stop laughing a few times. Then he shows up as George Hamilton, who once received an honorary degree from the International Smart Tan Network... Oh well, there were a few snazzy lines like something about him becoming an old queen! She steals the show, if you ask me...

Oddly, for such a masterpiece it bore me to death... and I've always found Bernstein fascinating and something of a genius.

The Oscar’s are notoriously… predictable!! I’ve seen odds leaders win time and time again over the years… it’s free money if you can fork over a sizable wager.
My biggest bone to pick with actors-turned-directors is them starring in the films they’re directing. I dislike it. It feels egotistical & phony to me.

I really can't review Maestro.
Last year I watched Tar. I absolutely HATED it.
Twenty minutes into Maestro, I bailed. I couldn't do it.
It was too much like rewatching Tar. I just shut it off.
I simply couldn't summon the patience to sit through it.
Other people can decide if it was good or not.
(BTW, I actually like Bradley Cooper, which is why I started to watch Maestro to begin with.)

If were talking about musical Biopic, Amadeus is no question the best one so far.
Very important not to look at Felicia's character through a 2023 lens. She was no victim, she knew from the beginning who he really was, she sort of accepted it. A lot of men and women did in those times where you had to live a lie to please the wider society. Being around his genius was a gift in itself.

I found it interesting how many characters really struggled to understand Leonard’s sexuality beyond the binary of straight/gay, as would have been the main language available to most people at the time. I never really felt that she was unwillingly his “beard;” although she may have been somewhat uncomfortable with his attraction to men at times, it seemed clear to her that they had genuine love for each other.

His acting was great portraying Berstein yet the movie was not about Berstein rather Felicia or love story. Hopefully different version of Berstein will be made. I want to see how he connected with Marlet music or his collaboration of making Westside story with other artists so on. He is a musically legend, and movie didnt do the justice
I grew up with Bernstein being a household word who represented the fine arts and education of the public about classical music. And that was above and beyond his musical accomplishments. None of what made him truly beloved by the public was in this movie. Also, Cilian Murphy is winning the Oscar. Duh

Completey agree. Good film. Spots of greatness. But not wholly great. Still a very good effort by cooper and an enjoyable film overall.
I could see this movie winning a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture for a Drama.
I highly doubt it would beat out Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon.

Bernstein was an incredible composer. Too little focus on the music in the film. Lead characters were irritating and in the end I had no empathy for them. Carey Mulligan asking Bradley Cooper to speak his truth was just so inauthentic. That would never have been a phrase in the 1970s. Beautiful visuals but a very episodic portrayal of a composer where the music played such a small role in the film. It was disappointing- best part was seeing real Bernstein conduct at the end - he was phenomenal.

I don't really like the movie because it's the same thing, he's talented and becomes famous, he got a great wife and family but he's gay, and that's it lol
To clarify for Me, the movie was NOT 100% boring - I just struggled sustaining my interest because it dealt more with Lenny’s negatives. (Homosexuality/cheating) than his music, composition, etc. The way he treated his wife overshadowed his accomplishments. Yes, it’s a family & marital drama but it had NO JOY in it-- just lots of “smoking” & mumbling with changing accents as the decades went by.
I was also hoping a glimpse of the process of how to get a musical or orchestral work financed & staged (even a *brief* scene on that) to BALANCE the tension & marital strife.
To me he came across as unsympathetic & self-indulgent by not explaining or having a scene getting into his mind why he was attracted to men - he just came off as a creepy predator especially towards the end “with the young conductor”.
Yes, the acting was no question BRILLIANT, so were the costumes/set pieces, cinematography, & editing, & directorial style. CARY MULLIGAN SHINES in this movie & you empathize & sympathize with what she had to go through. The rest of the cast is brilliant. BRADLEY COOPER, I sometimes feel he “tries too hard” to get that Oscar nod. One cannot help but feel him thinking, “I’m gonna WIN that Oscar this time.”
But I laud the man’s obvious love, passion, & dedication to his craft.
So people will leave, thinking that Mr. Bernstein’s an a-hole (& that gays are bad & home wreckers) with how he treated his wife & family to pursue his musical career/dreams - NOT the kind of legacy you’d like to LEAVE about a very COMPLEX, COMPLICATED, & VERY TALENTED & BRILLIANT MAN.
Again, was BRILLIANT from an ARTISTIC, DIRECTORIAL, & ACTING standpoint. But as far as BEING MOVED, EMOTIONALLY INVESTED, & UNDERSTANDING MORE about Leonard Bernstein’s LIFE (especially for those NOT theatre or symphony-inclined will not get a full picture of the Man’s Life/Career) - I felt EMPTY & a BIT BORED for something “HEARTFELT to happen”… it felt COLD & STERILE.
Yes, it was a well-executed movie from a production standpoint. And the Direction is by-the-numbers ala Scorsese & Spielberg brilliant - but it LACKED HEART. I wanted to LOVE IT & see it all over again, but ONCE WAS ENOUGH.

He’s excellent. But Cillian Murphy’s performance is extraordinary. 🙏 The Academy doesn’t award Cooper BA bcuz he’s a sentimental favorite. I give you last year: Yeoh was wonderful, but the best performance was Blanchett’s. Every year I feel the Academy Awards are less and less credible. I look at the BAFTAs. They do it right. (Except they denied Farrell. I guess they didn’t want Banshees to do a total sweep ☺️) I hope Oppenheimer does sweep. Best film we have seen in decades.

I think Michelle Yeoh was better than Cate Blanchett. Yeoh had more to do in her movie than Blanchett in Tar. Cate Blanchett was more robbed of an Oscar win for Elizabeth. I think that's her best performance. She lost to a weak, melodramatic performance from Gwyneth Paltrow from Shakespeare in Love.

I thought it was great film with 2 excellent leads.
I don’t mean to sound patronizing, but I think you truly will see the marriage differently when you’re older. It’s not that she settles into that trope; it’s that she starts to, for a while there, and then… something beyond the politics of that emerges. And the implications for Lenny are truly gutting, when he realizes all he’s missed about her w his shenanigans, and how he can’t recover it.

The movie is a masterpiece. Those who need to be spoon-fed will be challenged by it. Cooper deserves best actor award and movie could easily be best pic. Way better than Oppenheimer or the idiotic Barbie. Milligan will be nominated, for sure.

You mean the highly suggestible people who called this a masterpiece before they saw it because of talent involved and because the people who have produced it have marketed it as such? Some of us can see this for what it is, tedious Oscar fodder of the highest order, bad aging make-up where the daughter looks older than the mother; garbled overlapping chain-smoking dialogue; zero narrative pace. He’s a badly closeted gay man and she dies. That’s really all that happens during this exercise of Cooper’s self-indulgence literally begging for awards recognition. Yeah, you like it, but respect the legitimate views of people who think it’s hideous. There’s a reason it sunk without trace on Netflix after a day.

I like your review but I am not sure why your video edits are so rushed. It sounds like you are desperately afraid people will stop watching so the editing leaves not a millisecond gap and no chance for a normal pause. It is like you are afraid to take a "breath" in between lest we turn away. The result is it doesn't allow us to relax with your insights. Maybe that Is the new trendy way to present these. But it is the strength of your critique that should make us want to listen and watch.
Yes the film dies a disservice to Bernstein"s contribution to our culture and his extraordinary musicality by focusing on his private life soley in this film. Too much. And not relevant enough. It us not the reason we. CARE about him. I don't care if he came from Jupiter or Mars. What he did while here should be seen and celebrated. ."Shallow" should have been written to describe this film.
I agree that this is probably Oscar bait. They didn't do the research necessary to determine if Bernstein was a good subject matter. Bernstein was doing a dramatic acting routine, jumping up and down like a clown. He was not doing his job as a conductor, which is to show the audience what the symphony sounds like. I posted a video on my CZcams channel showing how he took a wrecking ball to Beethoven's symphonies manipulating the sound to make whole sections sound noisy and terrible. The press treated him like a sacred cow. Everything he touched turned to gold, even though his conducting included vandalism.

Maestro sucked. So boring. So slow. And the cigarette smoking was 100x more distracting than the nose prosthetic. The prop person needed to be fired, clove cigarette fumes shouldn’t be so heavy.

Rami Malek is not that good in Bohemian Rhapsody. His performance is more of an impersonation of Freddie Mercury.
