What's your favorite romantic drama?
The Fountain is very underrated
There's a little known movie called "The Cake Eaters", which was written and directed by Mary Stuart Masterson (of 80s movie brat pack fame, believe it or not.) It's an absolutely beautiful film, with all the real world relationship dynamics that these movies take on, with some others thrown in as well. It's such a great movie and it gets very little attention.
Dinner in America. You need to steel yourself, because this is a movie that does everything it can to turn you off during the first 15 minutes or so. You have to persist. I promise you it pays off.
It presents you with The Worst Man Alive, convinces you that he is nothing but danger for any woman that gets close to him, and then puts a new woman in his path who seems to be especially defenceless. The film then gradually shows you that you've underestimated her, and then the story changes him, until by the end you're rooting for both of them. It's a really unusual film: not totally unprecedented, but a style of movie that hasn't been made very often since mid-90s/early 00s period when this film would have fit right in.

To Catch a Thief with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. It's a classic.
Ethan Hawke summarized this whole trilogy perfectly: Before Sunrise shows us 'what could be', Before Sunset' shows us 'what could have been', Before Midnight shows us 'what is.'
There should of been a before midday, before nightset and before nightrise lol
Both reactors are in their early 20s I assume so I can understand why they wouldn't want to watch this particular movie in the series again for a long long time.
It's sort of a peek into what people in their 40s are feeling and going through. The first movie was the two in their 20s enjoying the freedoms of young adulthood and the excitement of what the future would hold. The second movie was the two in their 30s coming back together and realizing that what they decided to do wasn't working and wanted an answer to their 'what if' question. This third movie was the two in their 40s realizing that the answer to their 'what if' question wasn't what they had hoped for and have regrets/resentment toward one another.
There are plenty of people in their 20's being utterly captivated by these films, myself inculded. I just think these two are emotionally immature and don't quite get it. Everything being "weird" or "duuuude wtf did they just say??" Found these reactions boring which is a shame because reaction videos to the Before Trilogy are criminally few and far between. I wanted to feel the magic of watching these films for the first time again, instead I found myself often frustrated and annoyed by the immature opinions of the two girls.

I think that this movie is easier to relate to when you've been in long term relationships where lives merge and stakes get bigger and baggage builds up. These fights happen and they especially happen if you really love each other. I think they're in a toxic place but the love between them is palpable in this film too, and the potential they have to get through this is very high because of that love.
I think until you've been there and seen how you hit fights like this. Bad bad fights where you seem to be ready to not just leave but burn it all down. And you absolutely can get through to these. Probably anyone who's managed a relationship that spans decades has been through these make or break you transitional periods. And that's what this is. That's the ambiguity in the end, whether they've fought their way back to each other or not. Personally I think there's every reason to believe they took a huge first step.
This also is showing them in one day, a day where Jesse dropped his son off at the airport and then dropped moving to Chicago hints in the first scene. It's a day a big fight was brewing.
This is very true.
In your everyday life you just can't always bring every little thing to the table and discuss it with emotional intelligence. So you just leave it be and throw it on the pile that says 'tiny things that don't matter anyway'. And then when you do have a weak moment and several things go wrong at the same time and all of your rational emotional intelligence is not present, then all these unresolved things come back.
We have these fights 1-2 times a year. We used to come up with these ideas on how to avoid this scenario but in the end it still continued to happen.
Now we've accepted that this is how it goes (at least for us), apologize, lick our wounds, remember that it's all OK, and leave the fight behind us.
At some point you feel more hurt about what you said to your partner and how you made them feel in that moment anyway.
I don't think the girls were necessarily disagreeing with that. Of course fights happen. What they were cringing at was how these two were airing their dirty laundry in public and amongst their own friend group. It absolutely makes sense that two people who've experienced so much together would start to have issues down the road, but it isn't exactly hard to doubt that two people who are emotionally well adjusted enough would still be able to keep this behind closed doors, maybe only getting off one or two subtle jabs in public in the form of snarky jokes others would only laugh at. What happened in the movie during the dinner scene was way beyond that, and I think the girls were right to say that that just isn't normal. As the girls themselves said at the end of their reaction for Before Sunset, yeah, they may be in their twenties still, but they get it.
@@sarahnadeofpoetry This is one day. One dinner. If you've never done anything toxic in a relationship then congratulations, but I think this movie might be more honest than you are. Maybe that particular toxic isn't your brand, and while the scene you described is something you would "never do" then something you've done or said is something I would "never do" but we've all made toxic mistakes in relationships.
And I never thought the women in this video were saying that fights don't happen 🤔 Everyone knows fights happen. Some people are naive about what the bad fights can look like.
@@ceceliam9014 Like I said, it's not about never being toxic, it's about not being toxic in this one particular way. You're right, it isn't my brand, but that's also because it isn't something that's going to happen in every kind of relationship. As I said before, it's the difference between fighting behind closed doors and just letting it all spill out to drench other people, too.
I meant that your original post seemed to imply that because Hayley and Stella are younger, they might not 'get it', as in, this particular sort of fighting. I was just saying that even if they haven't exactly lived it, that basic human understanding of fighting and at least partial civility is one we all can understand.
@@sarahnadeofpoetry When I was in my early 20s, I most definitely would not have understood what fights can look like and still be expressions of trying to make love work. Not until I'd been in a relationship that lasted for a long time, merged finances, merged important life decisions, etc. Throw kids in the mix it's even more intense. It's not about age, but it absolutely is about experience... And that can relate to age.
Sure we can all conceptually "understand" how to argue "properly", but if you haven't had experiences with high stakes like this then you don't actually understand it yet. And I think the reactors had some judgments on the characters that comes with inexperience.
I’m of the same generation as the actors, and so I saw these three movies when they came out, at the age the characters were in, respectively. And I have to say I have never seen another movie come close in terms of realism. I believe the reason these characters are so deeply beloved is that they are so damn real. We feel like they are actual people we actually know. It is testament to the writing of team Linklater, Delpy and Hawke - and the acting of course, which was meticulously rehearsed before each shooting, down to every pause, sigh and gesture. Incredible, incredible work by true artists.
Brilliant thing about these movies (and you touched on it in your commentary): You guys sound like Jesse and Celine in Before Sunrise. They meet because of the arguing couple on the train, unable to understand how the arguing couple came to be that way. In Before Midnight they become that arguing couple. You should re-visit these films every decade.
Watch this movie again after you've been married a while. It hits differently. The part at the end where they can't stand each other, argue, say hurtful things. After you both let it all out, you kiss and make up and go back to normal. It's because you both formed a strong bond with each other over the years. You can see Celine attempt to grab her bag and leave, but she instantly realizes she actually doesn't want to. It's the bond that keeps a relationship going.
Looking at their relationship from Jesse's perspective juxtaposed to Jesse's previous relationship with his ex(the way he described it in Before Sunset), is interesting. Jesse described the relationship with his ex as a loveless marriage, his life all bad all the time, a bad environment for his boy, etc. You could tell he had completely given up on his relationship, he had no interest or passion toward it. Now compare that to him and Celine. Yes, they're dysfunctional, yes they fight. But Jesse genuinely cares about this relationship unlike the last one. They aren't perfect, but you can tell, if nothing else, Jesse has deep and genuine love for Celine.
I strongly suspect this may just be a GenX vs GenZ conflict here. I noticed even in the first movie the blunt, self aware and introspective conversations took them by surprise. And also discomforted them a little bit. So I think they're taking some of the discussions as being more malicious than they really are. This is just the way people of a certain age and a certain generation talk.
Nah, Gen Z are pretty darn self-aware. Hell, every little personal quirk is a meme. We’re quite forward with our flaws. Almost to the point of laughing everything off as a given instead of a problem.
The thing is though that laughing at something or memeing it are attempts at deflection and self deprecation These characters arent doing that. Theyre being completely sincere when they talk.
Yeah, it's cringe inducing when they tense up every time they mention sex. Even if you're potential asexuals, it's a very odd response.
"Before Midnight" is the one that should be rewatched, I think, to understand it fully. First time I watched it I felt very similar. I needed the second watching to fully understand what was said and why and what was held back. But I do not think Celine and Jessy grew apart. Fights happen and I understand this movie's message as going through the worst of them and still wanting to be together, even when you can't resolve certain things, you learn to forgive.
Exactly. Perfection, or the expectation of it, is the deathbed of real love.
The trilogy is so rooted in reality and the writing & acting is superb. The first movie shows the romantic ideal. The second movie poses the question of what could have been and what might be. The final film shows how difficult romance can be when faced with the harsh realities of life (finances, children, exes, etc). As a whole, the trilogy is a masterpiece. If you two haven’t seen Boyhood, you should watch it. Another sweeping piece by Richard Linklater. While it’s not as good as these films, it’s still a genuine work of art.
The girls should totally carry on - with a new channel if not on this one - and should totally, totally react to the 1951 drama, A Streetcar Named Desire.

I want to remain hopeful that the end of this film was not the end of their story. One of the last things Jesse says is he’s seen their future. What if the next film is the two of them as grandparents. They stuck it out together and didn’t walk away. The story would be about their enduring love for one another through all the ups and downs that life throws at us.
By the end of the movie, you didn't _like_ either of them, but what about love? I honestly loved Celine and Jesse _more_ in this movie, knowing how the encroaching years drop their layers of sediment on all of us, and however much we try, however creative our dreams, however planned our hoped-for futures, the march of time can leave us jaded or hurt beyond words sometimes. Ideal solutions and happy endings are generally for poorly told stories. We can never understand this in our twenties. It's literally impossible. Only life, with its endless tides, can even begin to teach it. And though it's a painful lesson, it's not the end; we can learn to love despite these awful collisions and abrasions. Love isn't all encompassing. Love is acceptance. Love can be mundane. And love is behaviour.
You girls should keep the channel going if possible have the guys on for special rare appearances at least. But don't quit.

Give it some time, ladies. This is how it really is. You fight and you work through it. You’ll see.
But not in public. That was literally their one big issue with it. And I really don't see either of them doing what either of these characters did in that dinner scene.
As you grow older you will find that these kinds of conversations are realistic. There is love resentment, fear, compassion, and anger in many conversations at the same time.
The actors and director have said that at the beginning of the first film, Celine and Jesse watch a middle aged couple fighting on the train. By the end of the last film, they have become that couple.
When you're my age, you can only look at this movie with fondness and wry humor. This is how we are and who we are.

The dinner scene conversation is so lovely. Love listening to Xenia Kalogeropoulou - whom Ethan Hawke refers to as Greek Audrey Hepburn. Great reaction guys

What a fascinating reaction to this movie. Jesse and Celine's interactions are what a relationship is when people are honest about their thoughts and feelings. And if they share them as they're happening this is what happens. It's raw, difficult, and often painful... But in this case always real. And at the end, they reconnect. Like the old man said at the lunch table: they remain two different people. And that's the beauty of it, they don't numb who they are to appease or be pleasant, both are immensely themselves. And they find their way back. It's not happily ever after with it's fake fantasy joy. It's actual love between two "real" individuals, before, during, and after a fight.
And yet, all through the film both of you just saw it as ugly and wrong. It was very irritating and at the same incredibly interesting...
So, sincerely, thank you very much! I was very annoyed but also very engaged by a different point of view. It was worth watching.
Gen Z will not understand this movie really well. They don’t have maturity to understand that this represents the reality of relationships. They are use to watch regular Hollywood romantic movies.
Came back to this trilogy at least 5 years later, you’ll appreciate more I guess.

BOYHOOD is a fantastic movie with Ethan Hawke that follows a very similar formula. Filmed over 12 years, following the childhood of a young boy into adulthood, and the journey of his family. Ethan Hawke plays the dad. Also directed by Richard Linklater, like this trilogy.
You guys gotta check that out if you have room for one more reaction. Absolutely beautiful film.
So much of what gets people to this point is stress and pressure, and the feeling that you are trapped. Even if the people you are trapped with are people you care about deeply, you feel trapped. We are like atoms, the more you try to constrain us, the more violently we bounce off the walls. And of course, in the modern world of the exploding atomic family (see what I did there?), that pressure and stress becomes even more complex.
And it's not just couples. You get the same dynamic with any group of people who are forced by circumstance to live in each other's pockets for long periods of time. Bands notoriously break up due to exactly the same dynamic. The pressure of being 'stuck' in a situation where the stakes are considerable, it causes people to start redirecting their frustration in some other available direction. And usually a lot of passive-aggressive issues because a lot of people aren't comfortable with direct conflict.

What does "the stakes" mean?
Celine is cynical because she knows that she's the other woman which isn't a nice place to be. It doesn't matter that Jesse was unhappy in his marriage and really wanted to be with her. Even if he had divorced his wife first before they got together, the fact is that he left his marriage because he was still in love with her. If he had never met her again he probably would have stayed in this toxic relationship until his son was old enough to understand the situation and then leave. But because they chose to do what they did, Celine will FOREVER be the 'homewrecker' in her own eyes and I'm sure she feels others who know their story closely and exactly how it all went down think the same too. She's resentful of the situation and her position in this dynamic. Which is why every time he talks about how he feels about not being able to be there for his son, she takes it personally because it is personal for her! He literally chose being with her, making a family with her over being present in his son's life. It was a choice they both made to be together but it doesn't seem to be something she has come to terms with yet. Neither of them. They both have guilt over their choices and it's causing them to be resentful towards each other. I actually love this ending to the trilogy because of how it really addressed how a beautiful love story from the first movie can just spiral out of control when you get into the nitty gritty of REAL life.
Just remember, Love means never having to say you’re sorry. 😜
Please girls no offense but you two will understand this film a lot more when you rewatch it in a few years when you are older or when you are around the age of the characters in the film. The first time I watched this movie I didn't like it much. Now rewatching almost 15 years ago I totally understand it (and makes me sad) and I like it very much now. Unfortunately (for better or worse) this is how many couples deal with their marriage. Its to see how far or when a person is willing to love and be disappointed without giving up on them
I dont know if anyone is paying attention this late but id be very curious to see the girls react to "Reality Bites ". also starring Ethan Hawke with Winona Ryder.
Maybe I’m not reading enough to a huge mental fight like that - but I feel like people kinda read too much into it. I basically take it as shit happens you’ll hurt each other things will happen you’ll say stuff you shouldn’t - but if it’s meant to be - if you still love each other you’ll be ok. That’s the last little bit for me 1 they both do understand they love each other and they’ll be ok 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Great trilogy
The before series isn't about romance, it's about navigating life, that involves romance.
I still find this film a hard watch. I love the first two films but this one is so depressing because it cuts too close to the bone. Excellent film making but yeah... not one I ever want to watch unless I'm feeling masochistic.
Believe it or not, there are men out there who aren't so fragile that they can't handle a woman with her own ideas, or can't celebrate her successes even at something he enjoys. Not all men have the expectation that a woman he's with is less than she is or should be. A relationship is about two people who do everything they can to make their partner and themself the best version of who they can be. And that's true, even after 40.
The first movie is the fairytale ideal, second is how that fairytale ideal FEELS and the final is what happens when you try to make the fairytale ideal work in real life.

Also, I just want to say that fundamental differences in belief or dreams aren’t a guaranteed doom for relationships. It is 100% possible to be in an amazing, loving, fulfilling, endlessly happy marriage with someone whom you have fundamental disagreements with. It happens all the time.
It’s all about communication, and yes, compromise. Relationships all require compromise. But when it’s never ending and never communicated how much certain compromises hurt, that’s when things start becoming damaging.
That is why I hate when people come and say "saying to your partner something that you don't like about them is insensitive" and am just like why!? and their answer is "because everyone anybody is perfect so you have to accept them like that" and am just here thinking - that would end in a break up, because if time to time they do things that I don't like at one point I would be just too tired to keep up with it.
You don't seem built for long term relationships. Even the "perfect" partner will invariably do things that irritate you. Sometimes you need to communicate that, and it's the way you do so that matters. Other times you have to accept that aspects of your partner aren't going to change, and be okay with that to maintain the relationship
I think it's more that one has to determine if the flaw in their partner is not a big deal, or a deal breaker.
So... this is my favourite film series. I just want to share: I was 23 when Before Sunrise came out. And I was 32 when Before Sunset came out. And 41 when Before Midnight came out. I would love for you two to re-review Before Sunset and Before Midnight when you are 32 and 41 respectively. I think it would be brilliant.
Just out of curiosity, now that you are 50+ how do you feel about the last movie, what are your thoughts on the future of Jessie and Celine? I like to believe they still love each other and still live together.
@@VVM- I do believe they still love each other, and I do believe they stayed together. What I don't know is how much they grew from the experience as individuals. In the second movie, Jesse (at least) recognized the importance of commitment; which is why he was the one to go after her in the end, but he also said he was not going to be a dog coming back to abuse. That commitment alone could hold them together; they obviously both love their children. But their fulfillment depends greatly on their willingness to learn about themselves, how they change, how they react, etc.

Doubtful... I think they'll encounter some of these pitfalls themselves. Maybe not as bad, but I think never compromising is just as bad as always compromising.
It's the beauty of youth. This movie made me intensely uncomfortable when it came out. Rewatching now, with the benefit of an additional decade of life experience, it's more relatable and I actually find the ending more optimistic than I did originally.
@@citydweller99 This assumes that the game is to attach yourself to someone until death, and that if you don't do it for whatever reason then you've lost the game. A lot of people would be happier and more fulfilled investing in their friendships and looking at living with friends as the more natural cohabitation.
This one is a sad one. It’s like the dissolution of a marriage maybe. I was hoping that 2022 would bring the fourth part but they already confirmed it would’ve happened if it was happening.
Sad all around that they broke the nine year between movies streak-1995, 2004, and 2013.
Another interesting thing about this one is that Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy are all credited as writers for this one because they all had a hand in shaping the direction of the story and the characters. This was a conscious choice by all three of them to not go with the typical happily ever after ending for a couple that seemed so smitten with one another in the first two films. It certainly is a brave choice and a brutally honest one.
Hey, not sure if either of you will read this, but I want to reassure you that as “real” as this depiction of growing older with someone is, theirs is not a necessary outcome. You both seem to be aware of the pitfalls for the characters in the movie, and I think that bodes well for you in your future relationships. Make it a point to prioritize open communication and you will grow together instead of apart.

I aged with these films and always related at the time, but watching people react to this it changes with age for sure. What I feel from each is totally different now than when I saw them in real time. Awesome reactions.
What you're seeing in this film is not their daily life; it's a crisis point. The whole issue is that Ethan Hawke feels quilt about Henry and Julie feels quilt about the same thing, but she's trying to deflect. Thematically, the movie is about reaching middle-age and not becoming who you imagined you were going to be when you "grew up" and dealing with the fallout of those regrets. Most people feel that way, even if they are as successful as Jesse. Once they get past that point, probably in a few years, their relationship will change again and they will settle back down when they get through their growing pains. Their relationship is not a devolution, it's the natural consequence of knowing someone too well on the inevitable march through time.
Excellent summation. To add to that, I find the ending optimistic insofar as they are finally deciding to turn towards one another, despite all the insecurities and doubt. It doesn't magically fix their problems, but it provides a path forwards. Long term relationships can't be sustained by the passions of early infatuation and lust. They demand deliberate acts of commitment, day after day, to press past the obstacles that inevitably arise.
I think this movie was a consequence of the first movie. Had they dated, and stayed in touch. Perhaps when they were young, they would have flamed out. Either that or they would be together or in the same boat as his ex wife. And though its tough to watch, its trying to say, that they choose to keep the flame alive. And its not romantic, in the pretty sence. It is romantic, because otherwise they would have given it up. He tried, to be with her. Twice. His intent was always to be with her. And likewise with her, though she had a every reason why she couldnt be with him, from her grandma passing, and her respecting his marriage. Her not wanting to move to the US. She is trying to be with him. Both are trying, in a world where there would be consequences and mistakes. I like to think, that they didn't give up on each other. And thats love.

The scene to understand the film, and the entire trilogy, is the dinner scene. When the old woman talks about the sunrise or sunset that disappears. These three days that we observe as spectators in the WHOLE lives of these people are unique, almost unreal. In the first film, both characters are stunned by the experience of connecting so deeply when you least expect it. In the second film, the shock is due to the possibility of that second meeting and a new opportunity. Both films show that singularity, in an idyllic and romantic way. Let's remember that it is only a day (and a few hours) that we see them, we don't really know them, we know what they say about themselves.
The problem with the third film is that the day recounted is not unique because they have not seen each other, but because they no longer have time to relive that idyllic dream again in their common life. The honesty of both (and therefore, their connection) in the previous films came from recounting other people's sorrows, the problem of being married is that now they themselves are included in them. It is obvious to think, then, that this day where they attack each other is not the rule, but an exception, an honest exception, but also devastating. Once midnight passes, this unique and special day will also disappear. They are going to go back to what they were before.
I don't agree with the narrative that this trilogy is "realistic", as many others say. After all, it recounts exceptional days of ordinary people.
I think it is coherent, coherent with this relationship in which they are trapped, that of being themselves (with all the bad that that means).
I would also like to mention that I really like Celine in this movie, it is the movie where she is most neurotic, yes, but also more imperfect, more real.

The best thing about the hotel argument is they are both so pretentious in their speech and education. The insults they throw at each other are so much better than regular people
You can disagree on a lot of things and fight and hurt each other as a couple, as long as both of you are willing to accept and listen to each other, and tolerate each other's very human failings and foibles.
It would be very interesting to see how you react to this movie in 20 years, or whenever it is you reach the age of the characters. I’m thinking you might be a little more jaded about the prospects of avoiding these type of conflicts, respectfully. :)
What they’re facing is an unresolvable dilemma that emerged the moment the twins were born: Jesse now has children on two continents, and his ex-wife is (understandably) not very cooperative. His only hope is Celine will make a sacrifice for the benefit of a child she clearly loves as her own. And she (understandably) thinks it’s unfair that she’s the one who has to make it.
But it’s really just the pretext for what’s really ailing in their relationship. It’s not just about who should make the sacrifice, it’s about years of disappointments, feelings of abandonment and even betrayal. And the thing with long term relationships is, unless your communication is exceptionally good, unresolved conflicts and resentments tend to fester.
You’re touching on it yourselves: They had chances to speak up, (you always do), but they brushed it under the rug for the benefit of this exciting thing they had. It’s what people in love do. At that moment where the second movie ends, they both make a decision that is going to affect the rest of their lives, not just in good ways. Question is, would they do it again? I’d like to think, at their death beds, their answers would be yes.
I think your viewing this film from a slightly incorrect vantage. I don't think this is a regular occurrence the leads in this movie. This is a build up of things going since before sunset. I'm sure they have been brought up before at least somewhat and I'm sure they'll fight about them again, but to me this is more about the culmination problems which haven't been faced. While I'm sure they will fight again in the future because some problems can not be talked through, they just exist. I don't think they will have the same kind of blow up. Basically, if they survive tonight they can survive anything. It isn't a storybook fairy-tale ending, i do consider it a happy one.
The lead couple Celine and Jesse appear in another movie by the same director called Waking Life (2001) in a crossover scene. In a fourth movie appearance.
The most interesting part of these reactions is I'm wondering if there's a generational shift in the way couples communicate or if these two are too young and naive to know that despite, what they know about healthy communication and conflict resolution, it is much harder to put into practice in real life.

i know you guys are cringing at the nudity, but it was very well done imo - that's how life is when you're in a long term relationship. he's seen her naked a million times and she's clearly comfortable being topless around him, she doesn't care to put her top back on despite it not being "sexy time" anymore because couples see each other naked all the time, even outside of a sexual context

Julie Delpy has basically said she will NOT do anymore in the BEFORE series, although neither Richard Linklater or Ethan Hawke have commented on any future installments (at least as far as I know).
They COULD do one more, if only to focus on the love story "ending" (whether by divorce or death). Life can provide either one.

This is my favourite trilogy of all time. I always love revisiting these characters, and seeing how they've evolved over time.
Thank you for reacting to this movie and finishing up the series. This wasn't the best movie of the series. It does however very accurately depict what a real relationship looks like. For most people love is almost always there. Unfortunately over time issues come up and they are not always resolved. Sometimes things get so compounded people can either try to fix the problems, leave or settle. Not the most promising future in anyone's life. But that's the nature of pretty much every relationship in history. In the end we all have to do whatever we think is best. Now our choices may not be the best for everyone around us. Which is why our lives are never just our own. The choices we make do impact everyone in our lives.
My 3 fav films of all time. Loved your reaction for the first 2 but I had to stop this one. The balance of talking was wrong. 5 mins of conversation for every line. Too much. Also, gen X just say what they feel. i think maybe that is why the characters shocked you.
Yeah, I noticed some discomfort with the conversation style even in "Before Sunrise" I think they're just unused to that blunt yet self aware way of talking.
