Mad respect for you all. I have several BCM’s and a DD but am looking forward to owning a SOL gun
Really like the mindset and mentality of your companies products.
Edit: I’ve since shot the 12.5 with the .070 gas port and is incredibly gassy. Especially suppressed. Wasn’t pleased with its performance. It experienced a few failures to lock back while suppressed. And tons of gas in the eyes.
Reno what up my dude? Keep that sick content flowing brother I love your channel so much I'm subbed on 2 different accounts so I never miss a vid!
Just saw the collab with GunThots
@@cxsey8587 coincidence... I think not
I have a carbine profile barrel with a sons gas block/tube and it is way under gassed, lots of failures to fully cycle the BCG
Side note: also running Vltor A5 buffer system.
I don't own a single SOLGW upper and or rifle, and honestly I have no need for another AR. But all that being said, this advise is exactly why I recommend people to look at your company. If I end up wanting another AR in the future, I'm going with you guys, no questions about it. Love what you guys do and how you go about it, keep up the good work.
Can’t wait till SOLGW isn’t on eternal back order on literally every site on the internet
Have a Lone Star, I’ve ran thousands of rounds through it, Only issue I’ve had was bad ammo. Keep up the great work guys!
This is fantastic info. Thanks for putting it on CZcams!
Ohhww sa-weeet! Just what I was looking for. Thanks for the info, SOLGW guy, very much appreciated. Cheers!
I'm super impressed you guys are actually answering people's questions! usually you can never get a reply from people that post stuff on CZcams. makes me want to throw money your way. 💸
Loving the AR knowledge drop. Keep up the good work!
"Ample Gas---Ample Mass = IDIOT PROOF"
Sounds like a T-Shirt to me Mikey!!!!
I love how you guys run your company. I am planning to order very soon.
I do appreciate the openness about parts and theory. Specifically all the QA/QC videos recently have been great. I can't say I've seen this from any other company. BCM has some videos but it's not this detailed. Thanks!
Just found out about SOLGW. Man I wish I'd have known about you all sooner. Just built a 12.5 that is terribly under gassed unless you run a super wore out buffer. I need to gauge the gas port but I know its quite a bit smaller than a comparible KAK barrel. Thanks for publishing this and I hope to purchase more parts from you in the future, I have one of your BCGs on the way for my carbine.
Excellent video and great disclosure. There really isn't much secret sauce to ARs, but other companies treat it like that. I wish my SOLGW 13.7 M4-76 had a gas port maybe .002 larger, maybe just make it straight .080. It doesn't perfectly cycle weaker brass like PMC Bronze .223, but then again I would never feed it that on a daily basis. It feels sluggish and one out of every 3-5 short strokes with that .223. Most of its life is going to get M193 of Mk262 types and often it'll wear the Sandman-S, so I understand why it is ported like that. Wit the Sandman it runs like a sewing machine. Still it is one of my favorite rifles.
Fantastic info! Thank you for sharing and the openness
Great video! Thanks for the information. Keep up the good work!!!
Transparency. Love it 👍🇺🇸 stay safe out there
You guys are great I've bin searching everywhere for your 13.7 barrel
Thank you!!! I am a new student to the world of AR clones; and this info is priceless! 🥰😎👍
Super sick dude. Thanks alot for the info!
Just ordered SOLG 11.5 and SOLG gas block running the A5 system can’t wait to see how this thing runs 🤙🏼🇺🇸
How is it running I ordered a similar setup
Huge respect for solgw
Thank you.
I'm actually surprised how much gas you can pull out of these guns, sometimes. My BCM 14.5 midlength gun has a port size of .0781 or so. Runs on all ammo types with no issue. Even with an adjustable carrier with the gas a 1/4 of the way open, the gun will still run both 5.56 and .223. If I open it half way it's hit or miss with .223 ammo. It does make me happy to see you guys not only being transparent with your adherence to the TDP and your reasoning behind, but showing the numbers. I'm in the market for another long gun, so I think SOLGW is my next buy. You guys seem like spec junkies, and I am too so I get it.
I wonder what DD used for port size on my rifle length 18” v11. It has no problem pushing heavier buffers even with a .308 spring in the tube. “Adequate “ gas indeed.
Thanks a bunch for the vid. Now I know what do with my short stroking 20" rifle length with a .077 gas port from B.A.
I have one too from them and it's under gassed. Still need to check mine. Came with the A2 gas block installed so I've never seen the port yet. Nothing left to try at this point except hotter ammo. Been seeing a common thread on the their barrels for small ports.
Thank you for the valuable info. It's nice to get some appropriate info with the actual reasons behind it. Plus coming from a gun manufacturer is kickass. Thank you for not treating it like the world's oldest secret that ONLY gin companies are allowed to know
Speaking on gas and mass, what’s your opinion on the surefire enhanced bcg? It seams as though they are attempting to correct the same thing that the vltor buffer system is in a Carbine length buffer platform.
Aloha everyone @ sons of liberty.
I had a question:
I was mis-delivered a barrel from PSA. I ordered a 16" FN CHF and got a 20" FN CHF with a rifle-length gas system.
my question is if I chop the barrel to 16.25" and open the gas port to .101 will I essentially get it to run smoothly?
I have a boresight now. And, I have seen some nightmares for gas ports.
The shade-tree barrel makers would not know a good gas port
penetration if it ran over them in a truck. Then they like to argue
that it does not matter as long as the gas gets out. What about gas
port rough machinings with dangling drill fines or dull bit tear outs
sitting in the path of the bullet. Who wants a bullet jacket shredder
for a gas port intersection with the bore? Also they could take a
little more care and time the penetration, so it does not leave half a
land and half a groove behind to do more bullet jacket shredding. To do
it right, use a plunge type EDM reamer to finish the hole.
I'm battling with a BA hanson barrel have FTF and or short stroke issues have it narrowed to the barrel thinking its gas port size
Gas port sizes for subsonic suppressed firearms? Ended up having to really open up my port for my 300 AAC 11" after I put a can on it. Worked fine with supersonic and no can, but totally locked up the BCG before having to drill it out when I threw on the can and put some 208gr Hornady Black AMAX rounds through it. I have an adjustable gas block as well.
FYI : This was not one of your items I experienced this with. Just wondering for future builds.
👍thank you for sharing!
I have a BA 20 inch that I suspect is undersized. Still need to investigate, but know what size it should be now.
I’m getting a 14.5” cut to 10.3” and I need to decide on gas port size. I’m leaning towards a .076-.078 for .223 and 5.56 equally used.
I’ve considered suppressing. But won’t be any time soon. Maybe a couple years.
Will the gas port size I’m thinking of using be good to go for suppressed?
Could I use the .073, as you would in your barrels for the general purpose range use? Using the .223?
Any input you have would be much appreciated. Thank you.
I have an Aero Precision 20" barrel with a .0785 gas port. Let's just say... it really is under-gassed. Even with M855, I had to put a 2.1oz buffer with a 20% reduced power spring in it for reliable function. Is there something I am missing here?
Get a wider gas port. The video description says .093 for 20 inch rifles.
Mil spec gas ports should be a 0.0935. Some are 0.096 or 0.098
I have a carbine profile barrel with a sons gas block/tube and it is under gassed what do you advise?
Side note: also running Vltor A5 buffer system.
I like your philosophy
What i am curious about is how much an adjustable gas block can change the flow. For example, say i redrill .076 to .082 , can an adjustable gas block reduce the "effective port size" back down to .076 by squeezing down the glow?
Most adjustable gas blocks allow you to shut the gas off, or very close to off. So, any flow rate between 0 and 100% is possible.
Thank you for the very informative video. What will be the barrel length on the Presscheck rifle?
We will release that information soon
Ok so I have a 300 Blackout 10.5inch barrel with a suppressor. So my issue is felt recoil is terrible it seems not matter what with super sonic loads. Tried adjustable gas block but it is always on the edge of not working or being super over gassed. I'm assuming an A5 buffer system would help probably the most now but, kind of feel like it was designed to only run subsonic loads. Any input or help maybe? Or just stop being a baby too probably lol
Truth! Heck Yeah Dude!
Anybody have advice for a 12.5 inch mid length pistol?
Will be running with without can.
Been looking at a faxon barrel that has .625 gas port. Curious before I buy it if it will work?
I hope you guys can get to a point where you offer a commercial spec gas port and higher pressure/mil spec gas port to cater more towards suppressed shooters. I like your one size fits all approach, but hopefully as you grow you can cater to the guys that appreciate smaller gas ports with lots of cans haha. At this point, its really the only reason I trend towards other barrel providers.
Dan F maybe after the madness but that would be limited batches as the market segment is very small
Sons of Liberty Gun Works limited batches works for me. I prefer factory to building if it meets my criteria. Currently only centurion and hodge are doing that. Hodge is almost impossible to get factory complete and centurion doesn’t have your warranty or your footprint.
Dan F Sionics also offers Reduced Gas Port Barrels and Suppressor-Only Barrels
Do you have any data on 300 Blackout port sizes?
What are your thoughts on pairing Geissele Super 42 braided buffer spring + H2 buffer with SOLGW ARs?
What is the optimal gas port value for 8 in 300 Black Out?
I’m curious would a 12.5 mid length make sense ? Would be worth investing in
What the gas port size on your new 13.9 barrels sold on primary arms?

A question hope you guys can shed some light😊. So i have an Italian ADC/Tanfoglio AR15 (its FA and im not in the US), its 14.5 carbine, its using a H3 buffer, ejection pattern looked undergas. It works totally fine, both in semi or full, should i be concerned about ejection pattern or just leave it as is. Most of the ammo i use is m855 (hot) and the gun eats em all.
Try an H2 instead of H3.
@Evocati yes, like i mentioned it looked undergas (around 4 oclock), although it worked perfectly. Dont know if i should fix that or just leave it as is. Ive also changed the gas ring after it failed the gas ring test with the BCG falling on its own weight.
@@Nontacticalboy 4 o'clock is where it's supposed to go. if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
So for the Vltor a5 system would it different in buffer weights if you are shooting suppressed ? Or still the same
I run the same setup for both
What’s the skinny on the r5 bright dip?
I have a 24" barrel chambered in 6mm ARC with a .750 nonadjustable gas block. What can be done?
Every gun starts it’s life as a stripped lower
-atf
I have to take your armorer's class!
I'm really surprised .0005 makes a difference on a gas port. Like a couple thousand rounds you'd think that'd change. But maybe even that's taken into account. Neat
If I have a 13.9" mid length barrel with a .625 gas port, should it be opened up to .0785?
Is that the gas block journal? Most sights don't say what the gas port size is. They do say the gas block journal however. .625 is a common journal size in more light weight profile barrels.
So I'm screwed if I buy the 13.7 upper from you, since I mainly have weaker 223 ammo, or I'll have to buy a stock pile of milk spec 5.56.
What about gas size for a 7.5 inch pistol with h2 buffer and suppresor options? Or should something so short be in 300blk?Please let me know I have conflicting information.
The velocities at which a 7.5” barrel is capable of 5.56/.223 are not sufficient to achieve the terminal ballistics the projectiles were designed for. You are likely to see pinholing, with no or inconsistent fragmentation, yawing, or expansion. Ideally that cartridge should not be barreled at less than 10.5”.
I believe that barrel length is more feasible with .300BLK, which is designed for subsonic performance.
@@NewColossusNorthing That's what I was wondering. I bought a nice upper but its got a 7.5 inch barrel I'll just swap it to 10.5. I'll get a 7.5 in 300 for subsonic suppressed. Thank you for info guess it would be a good pdw type for close quarters.
What's the port size for an AR-10 20 inch barrel rifle length .308 ?
More Dumpster Defense lowers please. 😎
In a year or 2
Ballistic Advantage manufactures barrels for you guys right? At least thats what I see other people saying. And I guess you drill the gas ports in house? They should take notes from you guys about a just a hair of over gassing being ideal rather than too little. My BA 12.3 barrel is under-gassed and struggles to run the under powered ammo brands you mentioned which sucks because that cheap stuff is obviously economical for training. Wish I could have gotten a SOLGW barrel if availability was better.
I have a 12.5 BA barrel gov prof and there 223 wylde 18 in competition barrel and they are awesome they should fix
If you're that confident in the cause of your problem why not just drill it out?
@@Turin-Fett Because I shouldn't have had to do that... I buy a barrel I expect it to come gassed correctly.
@@josephsantana3094 isn't that pretty subjective?
@@Turin-Fett Not really no. It should be adequately gassed to reliably cycle all commonly used ammunition. Not too much not too little, just barely enough to provide maximum reliability.
Best is a large gas port and an adjustable gas block.
what's the reasoning behind the 13.7" barrel? can you add a pinned muzzle device long enough to get it to the 16" plus length to make it legal without SBRing it?
Yes you are correct, it is the shortest you can go with then pin and weld their NOX and you’re just over 16 with no need for a stamp. I have the 13.7 w/NOX EXO2 with the Vltor A5.
@@jtpriester Did you buy the entire rifle from an FFL or did you build it?
What kinda buffer should I use in a mid length 14.5?
Start with an H buffer.
I should’ve never watched this video, now I want to buy your products 🤦🏼♂️
Im having cycling issues using an Adams arms piston system and your SOLGW Combat grade 16" mid-length barrel (.077 gas port) Im thinking about opening up the gas port to .081" per Adams Arms spec sheet, The gas block is adjustable so I should have any issues after that. Is this something someone can answer??? I have called SOLGW 5x, emailed 2x, and now Im trying CZcams comments LOL!!!!!!!! HELP
Where’d you guys go?
Im still subbed, missing your vids and the great knowledge you share in them
Gas port size based on the limits of the barrel bore…?
What are the barrel bore tolerances?
I have a 13.7 SOLGW barrel and bolt in a griffin receiver set. Geissele hand guard.
Runs a K can clone 100% of the time..
Sprinco white and H2 geissele buffer.
Geissele sd-3g trigger..
seems the bolt is on the looser side in the carrier. I understand this isn’t the “correct” test however the bolt and gas rings don’t hold up the weight of the carrier. Rings measured 12.70mm after roughly 1k rounds.
I out run the trigger and hammer follow if a H3 buffer is used or a white/red spring..
is there a reccomended gas port size to run a 18" barrel with a rifle length gas system and a carbine buffer? right now my barrel is at the gunsmith to enlargen the gas port, because no matter what buffer/spring weight and with an adjustable gas block it was still undergassed. i know i could run an a5 buffer system or a rifle length buffer system but i want to run the carbine buffer.
You figure out a solution? Considering the same set up for my 1st AR. 18" rifle length gas system on standard carbine buffer tube.
@@CarlPapa88 so what ended up happening was the gunsmith said he enlargened the gas port but when i checked it i dont think he did shit because it was still the same size and it was still short stroking (he's no longer in business, not because of this). so i ended up installing an A5 buffer and it STILL short stroked. then, i did something i shouldve done in the very beginning, before spending all of this money trying different buffer systems, adjustable buffers, adjustable gas blocks, gumsmiffs etc. and i tried a different BCG (an old salty smith and wesson mp sport 2) and wah-lah, it cycled perfectly. Turns out my brand new Aero precision nickel boron BCG had a leaky gas key. they have since replaced it but the replacement went into my range bag as a spare and i now use a SOLGW BCG. All of that being said i stuck with the A5 buffer system and its worked flawlessly. it has a slightly softer recoil impulse with the A5 buffer and ive since put them on all of my builds, from my 18" to my 10.5" pistol. so thats what id recommend if you want to run a rifle length gas system with an adjustable stock. hope this helps.
@@metaldave556 From my lil research into getting my 1dt set up that made sense. A lil more enlarged port, make sure BCG is efficient, lighten buffer weight...
Good to know& thanks for the reply. 'til now I'd never actually heard of anyone running anything other than an A2 rifle length stock on an 18"-20" w/ a rifle length system. Thanks. I know its doable at least.
@@CarlPapa88 i honestly wouldn't even mess with enlargening the gas port or lightening the buffer or buffer spring unless you run into issues. after all my trials and wasted money, i say get a quality BCG, like from SOLGW or BCM or another reputable company, and get the A5 buffer system. apparently Vltor came up with the A5 system for the USMC so they could run rifle length gas systems with adjustable stocks. BCM has its own A5 system they call the MK2 buffer which works just as well, and is usually in stock, and ive mixed their buffers with vltor tubes, as long as theyre the a5/mk2 systems. i had started out with the vltor 4.56 oz. buffer (which is one size lighter than their standard buffer, and it worked nicely but once i started shooting suppressed i went to their 5.33 oz and the rifle ran fine both unsupressed and supressed. the BCM buffers are slightly different weights than the vltors but its such a small difference its negligible. also, i heard somewhere that SOLGW uses microbest BCGs but tack on an extra premium for their outstanding warranty they include. so there are quality BCGs out there that arent insanely expensive. Toolcraft makes decent ones as well.
@@CarlPapa88 so in short, get a quality bcg, an a5/mk2 buffer system and send it. and then if there's any issues that arise you can try other things but i bet itll run with that set up.
Sir, I bought a midlength 16" White Label Armory upper that won't cycle on an H2 buffer, and the company won't respond.
What can you recommend I check?
Drop to the H buffer.
H2 _would_ make a 16 middy run super smooth _if_ it runs but it would be right on the ragged edge of working. I would avoid H2 on anything longer than carbine gas.
