  • Stock tires good enough? I used a snow storm to test the BFGoodrich Trail Terrain T/A against the Falken Wildpeak AT4W! But this throwdown goes beyond snow! I'll also talk about on-road performance, noise, and ride quality. Thinking about upgrading? This video will help you decide if the Falken Wildpeak AT4W is worth the switch, or if sticking with the stock BFG Trail Terrain T/A is the smarter move for you!

    Great review Ben. I should be getting my new wheel/tire combo tomorrow for my 24 TRD Sport premium. I went with Method 703s and BFG K03s in a 285/70/17. Here in NH we got what I expect to be our last snowstorm of of season last night but one never knows in New England 😄.

      First thank you for watching, I think that combo will be fantastic. I considered Methods, but we had a budget to stick in. I'm guessing when these tires are done, we'll get new wheels and larger tires, but who may not too! Enjoy your experiences and if you take a summer trip, we've gotten so much snow here this spring I'm pretty sure you'll find some in the mountains!

    It was a good thing that the tire tread filled with snow. Snow on snow is the best traction in snow. Thats why kick wax on skis works so well.

    Truck looks great. These sound like a diesel, which is kind of cool. I’m waiting for the Hybrids to come out & probably buy next year. The Falkens will give you a lot more grip, but are also heavier. So less mpg. Those Oem BF Goodrich’s are kind of like a aggresive highway tire, I’m sure Toyota did for better mpg.

      @BenInBeta  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hey Chris, yeah that's exactly how I see it. Hopefully, the hybrids won't be too expensive. Thanks for watcing.

    Those BFGs do have the 3-peak symbol when you buy them from a tire store or online. Why wouldn't they have it on the originally installed tires that come on the Tacoma?

    • @BenInBeta
      @BenInBeta  Před 14 dny

      That's a question for Toyota I guess. But manufacturers do this all of the time. They work with tires companies to get the exact performance they want out of a tire and still use the model name. It's why often the same tire you purchase separately will have a much longer mileage rating. Thanks for watching and the question.

    • @Japplesnap
      @Japplesnap Před 14 dny

      @@BenInBeta I wonder if the tire is indeed good enough to meet the 3-peak requirements, but they just didn't go through with the testing since it's strictly an OEM tire specifically developed for Toyota.

    • @BenInBeta
      @BenInBeta  Před 14 dny

      @Japplesnap it performed pretty well in the snow so it's likely good enough for pretty much anyone in that regard. It could be that as well, we'll never know 😁

    How would you distinguish the tire noise on the road/highway between the Trail Terrain & the Wildpeak AT4? Thanks!

    • @BenInBeta
      @BenInBeta  Před měsícem +1

      It's negligible, the AT4Ws are very slightly louder if you have your windows open. Windows closed, in our truck id didn't notice a difference at all.

    • @mqnwest
      @mqnwest Před měsícem

      @@BenInBeta To go one step further, can we say that the AT4Ws are substantially quieter than KO2s? This is for an 07 Lexus LX470.

    • @BenInBeta
      @BenInBeta  Před měsícem +1

      @mqnwest since I don't have experience with KO2s, I couldn't make the claim. But having come from a Hyundai Tucson to the Tacoma with the AT4Ws, I really don't hear much difference on the road. Especially if the windows are shut, you can hear some tire noise with the windows open, but it's not bad at all.

    tl;dr - stock tires are totally fine for most people and are plenty capable but buy what you want.
    Not anything against the OP but overlanders will jump through some craaaazy mental hoops to justify their want for a cool upgrade lol.
    Ive taken my stock 3rd gen Taco up to Montana in a snowstorm for a week on the stock OE 16” non-3PMSF tires and they did great. Ive also taken them to plenty of offroad trails with gnarly rocks aired down and they also did just fine.
    If we’re talking about PURE functionality, these stock Trail Terrains are 1,000% fine for 90% of us out there. People tend to overthink themselves into the 10% of those that NEED something more (I’m totally guilty of this but I always walk myself back).
    I think skid plates are a better first-purchase than a brand-new set of tires. Dont get me wrong those AT4Ws are sick and im constantly fighting myself to wear down my OE tires first but at the end of the day it’s money better spent on gas going on trips/vacations with my truck.
    Nice truck btw OP! ❤

    • @BenInBeta
      @BenInBeta  Před měsícem +1

      Thanks, and I would generally agree with you, but I'm glad I purchased these tires. The stock tires on the 3rd Gens were more capable overall compared to the 4th Gen, but it's all preference. The AT4Ws have performed awesomely thus far.

    Not once… with ANY truck did adding lift kits, levelling kits or bigger tires/rims make it handle better or tow better. In every instance, it looked great but handled poorly and towed even worse. If I buy a new Tacoma, it will stay stock with the exception of buying new tires (in oem sizing).

      @@beri232 I’m not sure which vehicles you’ve been in that didn’t feel better, but mine is a leveling kit from fox which lifts the front 2”. It rides so much smoother and doesn’t brake dive. Also, my brother has a king coilover setup on his raptor, which I know he lifted like 3”. I’m not sure which $200 lift you’re referring to, but as soon as you get into higher end lifts, things become way more comfortable than anything stock. That raptor wasn’t very smooth at first but is now the smoothest vehicle I’ve ever been in. He could go over anything and I’ll never feel it.

    As a former twin turbo truck owner, I wouldn't recommend upgrading to larger tires due to it forcing your turbos to work all the time. The turbos on my F-150 went out at 138,000'ish miles and Ford said it was because I didn't have "stock" tires. $7,000 replacement and repair and I told them to go fluck themselves. I sold it as is and bought a 2021 Tundra. With the Tundra's 4.30 rear end the gas mileage doesn't even drop with the Nittos I put on it. On my F-150 it went from 16 city to 11-12. That 3.31 rear end Ford uses is absolute dog shit.

    • @Japplesnap
      @Japplesnap Před 14 dny +1

      That's a crock of shit. Turbos don't fail because of tires. Bigger tires don't make your turbos work harder. Boost is boost and it's limited anyway. They screwed you over by using the tires as an excuse.
