The Great Giana Sisters is a 1987 platform game developed by German studio Time Warp Productions and published by Rainbow Arts. The scroll screen melody of the game was composed by Chris Huelsbeck and is a popular Commodore 64 soundtrack. The game is heavily based on Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. (1985), which led to production being stopped shortly after release, but it later inspired a number of sequels.

"Thank you Giana, but our princess is in another game!"
The reason this Super Mario Bros. Rip-off was made is simple:
Nintendo weren’t too friendly in having their games on Computers back then, so this is where this game came into play; they did what Nintendo did not.
Also to save time for viewers; gameplay starts at 5:35 as before that is the title screen music playing for almost 4 minutes, then the Menu for the remaining 90 seconds
Super mario brothers and great giana sisters are barely the same
Not true, They licensed super Mario for a number of Japanese home computers
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries You were probably talking about the one made by Hudson Soft, but yes. There was a time when Super Mario Bros. got a home computer port in the Japanese market, somehow.
This game was really great. The music and also the feeling underground was really well made.
You know... I never noticed as a kid that Giana doesn't wear a bra on the title screen. Then again I was 8 when I played it. 😀
Yeah, and the character looks like her daughter... lol
You can't unsee it now lol
Same. Was the first thing I noticed as an adult.
Must be particularly cold outside…
I used to watch the original longplay you guys did waaaaaay back in the day often when I was a teenager and just getting into retrogaming. Way back when the channel was called Cubic55, I think.
Thank you for the memories, World Of Longplays.
Giana Sisters has such a beautiful OST

It's been bugging me what that title music sounds like and today I finally put it together.... it sounds like it's based on the main motif of Telstar.
Gotta be one of the weirdest bits of gaming history that something that started out as outright Mario plagiarism turned into a rather neat indie game two decades later.
You'd be surprised that it worked the other way as well. In the 80s, Nintendo got sued by Universal for making "Donkey Kong", which Universal thought was a rip-off of King Kong. They wanted to cut a deal with Big N saying that they will give them 3% of all income from Donkey Kong series or they will get sued. Nintendo did not agreed and ultimately won the legal battle anyway.
Chris Hülsbeck's soundtrack is way better than Nintendo's.
This game was NOT Super Mario Brothers, but they F'ed up ripping off the first level of Super Mario Brothers. If they hadn't done that, which was stupid of them to do, Rainbow Arts could have pointed to PacLand as previous art.
THE GREAT GIANA SISTERS -
The best... the most iconic...
the most inspiring 😺👍🕹️!
I played this game a lot on my Commodore 64 and Amiga 500.
😺👍
It's similar to super mario brothers😃😃

I think the C=64 versions was better than the Amiga 500 version. The 500 seemed to be pokey in comparison to the C=64.
Also, I had mastered this game before I played it on the 500.
@@fuzzywzhe C=128d was better than C=64
@@DanielKing-dk5nr Oh come on, the only thing I did on my C=128 was type "GO64", but I ran Speedscript on it. I was a sucker to get that machine.
DS version too…
I had this on an Amiga 500
Miss those games.
Nowadays I'm showing my kids the games I used to play 😂
Never played this one, but I used to play the DS game a lot. Good memories.
The DS version's (and PC release based on it) bonus marathon level is all of the original game's levels back to back.
@@MumblyJumbles Oh, that's awesome.
Plan on getting the DS version…
This was more than a game back in the day. It was an event.
Argentinians might find the intro song quite familiar, and that's because it was re-used for a Flash animation series called "Alejo y Valentina" ( for example, video v=QuQ-Ek3qJxE )
That's where I heard it, I was going insane I knew the song but I have never played this.
The "hohoho" was so clear afterwards.
Is it subtitled..?
Finally meeting the fountain of that game.
One of the best platform game ever
I have this fantastic game for my AMIGA 500, this game similar the "Mith" Super Mario Bros.
Must be awfully chilly..
First video game uploaded to the channel all the way back in 2006
It's fun that the title has a "typo", while *GIANNA* is a real name and *Giana* isn't.
I always thought "Giana" was the typo.
Who says Giana isn't a real name? Remember, we live in an era where parents name their kids dumb shit like "Cherry Waffles Tennis" or "Crystal Metheny" or "KVIIIlyn"
(pronounced "Katelyn" because VIII is the Roman numeral 8). (I shit you not, those are the names of real people.) Compared to those, I'd say "Giana" is a perfectly normal name!
@@SpearM3064
I would reply, but I'm distracted by your sentence "we live in an era", talking about a name they chose 3 or 4 generations ago. 0.o)

Good times playing this on c64 as a kid....had an amiga later on, but didnt bother to replay the game with 16bit graphics....
I remember playing a flash version of this game
Memories.
...this was the game that was to take down Super Mario Bros.?! "You're comparing yourself to me? Ha! You're not even good enough to be my fake."
Nobody believed nor said that back then.
I remember seeing playthroughs of this. Too bad it wasnt around in stores when I was super young. That cover art would have caught my eye big time O
The game was pulled from the market almost as soon as it was released because of threats from Nintendo. This game really isn't quite the same as SMB, but they DID kind of rip off the first level.
Almost everybody that played this game, played a pirated version of it. I played it as a super mario brothers hack, where they modified the sprites to be more like SMB. I don't think I saw the real game until the mid 1990s.
Indeed, I have read up onthe history of it, and its fascinating how many things were pirated, ripped off or straight up shamelessly copied over throughout history. Turned out to be a half decent game at least though, so tis all good ^
@@screwthenet Video game piracy on the early systems kept the systems alive, and people were still willing to pay for the games.
Why would anybody buy a cartridge system when for a LITTLE more they could buy a computer?
And a lot of those people learned how to code, in the 1980s as a result.
The variety of games that were available on computers back then also VASTLY outstripped console machines. There were games which just couldn't exist on consoles at the time. It resulted in a great deal of variety of what people created. ZORK could never be on a console for example, but there were games like it that did more with the concept.
I remember playing on my uncles Appl 2 back in the late 80s and even still by the early 90s, and the only games he ever had were battlezone and Glider. I loved em lol Yes it may be so that piracy had some pros, as well as cons, but its hard to put a definite number on how many computer games existed between from the late 70s through to the late 80s. Also there were a good many game that had come out on consoles from after the advent of the magnavox Oddyssey in the early 70s, as well as the other early 1st and 2nd gen consoels of that decade. Even though consoles like the Atari 2600 would continue to have big name games made, or ones by 2rd party publishers as well as indie games, it still had in excess of 500 games before it was discontinued. The NES however has almost 1400 that we know of. Thats impressive given that the Master System only had 360, but even if there were 100 more indie games, it would be hard to say. Its fun to look back on all that stuff though fer sure ^
@@screwthenet The Atari 2600 had a little less than 500 games total for it. I can email them all to you in a zip file, but it's easy to enough to get off the internet.
The NES had about 750 games
The C=64 at least 5000.
Not that it matters. For computers, players programmed their own games, because they loved games. Look up CrossRoads or Pandemonium (the sequel), that came form a magazine for the C=64 in 1987.
Go look for "commodore 64 pandemonium" here. The first and second, pretty much the same game though.
Only professional coders could make games for the NES, there was a LOT of independent development for the various computers. C=64 maybe the most.
C=64 had a big userbase.
None of it matters now. Today, if I code under Linux, it's not that big of a deal to move to any other OS with the exception of if you're working at low levels which I do, there's no epoll under Windows really but that's for networking, and Linux was built around that kind of stuff.
There's nothing you can't write for one OS you can't pretty easily port to another today unless you're working with something weird.
In the early 1990's computers were still the king of computer games, but when the PS1 came out, the only computers that could compete were PC's with graphics cards. That was a mind blowing system at the time.
To be fair, there were a lot of great games on consoles that just couldn't run on computers. As consoles took off there WOULD be ports to computers like the Commodore, but they were terrible. They didn't put in much effort to the port. You'd see games come out that were much worse than games that were years older.
I can't say what games today are still playable from that era. I can't even stand games now. I just tried to play The Great Giana sisters. I was patient enough to get to level 3. It used to be effortless to win, and probably it still is, I just don't have the patience.
Man, Amiga games were absolutely not big on endings, were they.
In great giana sisters, beachball will make giana punk girl, fire lollipop will make fire punk girl, invencible rainbow will make giana invencible
Giana Sisters = OG Super Mario Bros
Why are the first 3 minutes or so just a still image with music? 😅
Because at that time there were no fmvs or videos, so you just put a godd*mn goodmusic playing with a cool image

That's some pixel perfect gameplay right there. Did somebody make a Giana Sisters AI Bot or something!
Ahora se de dónde sacaron la canción de la intro de Alejo y Valentina.
Who..?
I absolutely hate the floaty controls on the C64 version and they are still in this Amiga version, but not quite as awful. I know, I know, I'm sorry! I like the music though!
An introduction to the cute (default) and punk (power-up) forms that is Giana.
I’ve seen a version of Punk Giana that looks like a reject Cabbage Patch Kid… High Octane Nightmare Fuel…

I still prefer the sound of the C64.

Amiga 500 DOES what Genesis 100 DON'T!!!
Looks like Mario Bros
Nah. Looks like Sonic the Hedgehog. lol
@@Nostalgia9478 Nah. Looks like Metal Gear.
That's because it originally was. It was meant to be a pc/c64/amiga port of Mario Bros., but Nintendo pulled out when the game was almost finished and left the Dev with an unlicenced Mario port. So they went and changed everything that could be seen as copyright infringement and it became Gianna Sisters. Nintendo sued anyways, but lost due to the differences in gameplay and graphics (like the missing momentum in jumps, level and character design, music ect.,)
This game definitely does not showcase the potential of the Amiga. Lol
So is this some kind of joke demake mario ripoff using the name of a much more recent indie game and everyone in the comments is in on this or am I just really cynical?
You are just a child
This is the original… The sequels easily stand on their own merit, but infamously contain the original as an Easter egg…
En mi opinión, fue un mal clon del Super Mario Bros. Uno de los pocos juegos que recuerdo particularmente de forma negativa para Amiga aunque el rechazo es contra el juego en general.

ok this is a ripoff of the super mario bros game
Yes, it is. To the point that Nintendo sued and successfully got the game pulled off store shelves. It isn't like Nintendo was ever going to do a Commodore 64 (or Amiga) version of Super Mario Bros. At the time, they were super against doing any home computer versions. So, it doesn't surprise me that someone else basically decided to copy it.
