- How many of you came here because you heard this on the Sky tv comedy Moone Boy? The reason it was used is because the tune is deeply ingrained in the national psyche of Ireland. It was played daily as the theme to Gay Byrne's mid-morning RTÉ radio show.
Some of the images in the accompanying video show 'Gaybo' when he presented The Late Late Show on RTE television. He is, within Ireland, the country's best known broadcaster.
The music is Tico's Tune, and was only ever available as the B side to a single, issued in 1965. The performer is Manuel and the Music of the Mountains, aka Geoff Love. - Hudba
Whenever I miss my Grandparents I play this song and remember the good times of being in the kitchen all snug on the couch and the smell of fresh baking :)
RIP Gay Byrne 1934-2019
Had to play the theme tune again.
Same here, can almost smell the bacon and cabbage 😃
I would listen to his show over in Stockport in the UK every morning in the 1980s before going off to college. I'd then watch the highlights of The Late Late Show on Channel 4 every Monday afternoon.
If there has ever been a better broadcaster, I can't think of one.
Ah ,RIP Gaybo.... dossing off from school for illness, real or feigned, and this'd come on the radio. Life was good!
life was definitely simpler then. I remember it in my grannies room in the mornings.
Accidentally found this signature tune to Gay Byrne’s Radio Program and this exact same thought ran through my mind and brought a simultaneous nostalgic tear and smile.
Pure magic!
Yes the cup of tea and gay byrne
Yes, I knew that tune from I was two. Then later I only heard it when I managed to successfully pretend I was sick & got day off school.
I remember as a child getting ready for school in the morning and hearing this play on the radio each day, memories!
me thinks you were late for school :)
Passed away today 4th November 2019. A true gentleman...RIP
RIP Gay. Always loved this tune.
Reminds me of the novelty of staying home sick from school.
Robot Lover I was thinking the same thing as well, and lying on the couch with the blanket and watching the kids cartoons on the tv in the afternoon, I did that when I didn't go to school
I think this is my first memory as a young toddler in the cot! Aww this music 🎵 brings back such early and wonderful innocent memories when my Mother has this on the wireless
Same memories too! And as the end music began to play Gay hurriedly announced all the offers of washing machines and other appliances to needy mothers. Nice. :)
My granny's kitchen .. on the 'crystal' set ... the smell of toast and sausages ...
Yep me too😀 being home from school sick and my mam having Gaybo on the radio in the kitchen, better times back then for sure.
Yes indeed my friends.. well done sonny Jim.. all that sort of thing don't ya know.. ok we'll take a commercial break come back to us after this roll it there thank you :-D
perfect!
RIP Gaybo, legend of Ireland
Oh my God,when Gay Byrne had his morning radio slot on RTE Radio 1 - i remember this from the 90's. My mother always listened to it,and the only time i remember hearing were times when i was home sick from school,or on summer holidays!! Amazing memories though.
Sad day today - was such a fan of the man and today is the end of an era. There'll not be another like Gay Byrne.
Well said. He will be missed by us all.
I'm here showing my 11 year old. I'll be honest I have a lump in my throat. This music reminds me of before I started school. RIP Gay Byrne and thank you.
Gerry Ryan could have had the late late after Gay. sadly now they are both gone. two legends of radio and tv
@@johnkennethwiseman682 I rather saw Joe Duffy as the ideal replacement for Gaybo on The Late Late. I think it's safe to say the Pat Kenny years are best forgotten about...let's pretend they never happened!
reminds me of my granny lord rest her who used to listen to gay every morning and i mean every morning.i miss her still after 26 years
ed campion reminds me of my nana , lord rest her soul, she died in April 1991, I miss her still,
She loved to listen to gaybo in the mornings, then watch the late late show, she always wanted tickets to the show,
If you remember this music getting ready for school you must have been very late!! The Gay Byrne Hour (later show) began at 10am. It was a Monday to Friday show, never on Sundays. One of the best shows on radio, Gay was a great broadcaster.
jpconlon thank you so much for the show starting time info,,I couldn't for the life of me remember.
I heard it on sick days as well! Reception was not good in East Anglia and at the time I was amazed at the adverts as well as we had no commercial radio (this song also reminds me of Mona Yogurt). In my forties now so I'll admit I prolonged any sickness as far as possible to listen as he was much more interesting than teachers.
Ahhh the days if being out of school sick and my nana and mam listening to it
hadders81 we did the same as well in my family, my dad used to listen to it from the time we got up, it used to be over around 12 midday and hed listen to it until then, even if we were out at school hed still listen to it
RIP Gaybo. You will be missed.
Brings back memories of summer holidays in Mayo. Rest in peace to Ireland's greatest ever broadcaster.
For you Mam & Dad especially mam Rest In Peace you loved gaybo in the morning
I hope they are all now having a chat today. RIP Gaybo, and to your Mam and Dad 💕
RIP Gay. The Master of broadcasting.
r.i.p gay the best broadcaster certainly knew his stuff.
It's all about that last second... "Good morning!" Duh duh duh duh! RIP Uncle Gaybo!!!
Goodbye from the GB show. RIP
R.I.P Gay. In tears.
My mom rang him in 1978, I was 8 , she talked about her family to gay and all the house work, ironing etc , this was when very few moms worked from home 😁
Mr Gay Byrne, the voice of the nation, the ears of Ireland and the morality, honesty and integrity of mankind. Sorely missed, never replaced. R.I.P. GB
Forget Moone Boy, I came here because it's a great tune, END OF STORY.
What a treat...when that tune used to come on the radio, we knew we were late for school!!
Jaysus.. i am so late for school
Remember this tune getting ready for school in the morning during the late 80s early 90s. Brings back fond memories.
The nostalgia hearing this song. Always on in my mothers kitchen on a small transistor radio in the 80s. Hearing women ring in talking about their "running away money". Had no clue at the time what that meant but fully understand it as an adult now.
When young used to in from milking etc for breakfast & mum would av Gaybo on, Fond memories, & Sorry as I got older & radio's in vehicles & I popped on RTE2 with Gerry, Both legends & both sadly missed now,
what memories bring back them days....if only
Rest in peace❤️
awww, my ringtone when my mammy calls ❤
great idea
My first memory ever was me climbing out of the cot and hearing this wonderful theme tune and Gay Byrnes golden voice ahh the memories!
Thanks for the upload. Listen to the last 3-4 seconds for those bits before and after the commercial breaks. Ah, brings me back. Loved Gaybo's show.
Wow. I have heard that tune before. But I never thought it would be the theme tune for Gay Byrne radio show. Rest In Peace Gaybo.
Rest In Peace Gay...the one & only presenter of the Late Late Show (& Toy Show)
Gay Byrne. Irelands national conversation decades before phones and social media.
Rip gay Byrne you are a legend
It was with this music that people returning to this country from abroad really knew they had come home. Gay welcomed them home, just as he's been welcomed home tonight.
I lived with my granny for six months in my first job. She listened to gay Byrne in bed every morning, I used to think gosh that's a lovely gentle start to the day.
RIP gaybo
Heard it on Moone Boy! I'm from Mexico.
Maybe because it's strange for people outside of Ireland to know it?
Check out Bridget and Eamon.Ireland in the 80s.fantastic.
We love you, we will miss you, we thank you Gay
Listen to it when I was at home or sometimes in the car.
Ah instantly recognisable I was reared to this theme of Gay's radio show...especially when I was off school sick my mam would put the radio beside my bed and say now listen you might learn something 🤣...RIP to both of them 💕
Great tune!
RIP to the big man Gay Byrne - if there's any justice in the world we'll all have a listen to this in these difficult times, and it may raise a smile as we remember mornings in the past - better days some would say and indeed this music would be a fitting sendoff at the funeral whether cremation or traditional way in my opinion.
Hi LEIREANN
Actually it first began as the Gay Byrne Hour at 10am. Later it was put back to after the 9am news.
Rest in peace gay
That Brought back a few good memories, gay the one and only ,will never be forgotten. Rip .

RIP Uncle Gaybo
Great stuff - thanks for uploading
Remember this from the Gay Byrne show on Radio 1, always used to remind me of a jingle for a washing up liquid advert!!!
Rest in Peace, Gay.
This reminds me of being "sick" in bed on the hop from school in the 90's....
Always reminds me of being in my nannies as a child :)
Nice - oldschool!
Yeah me too
RIP Gay
Heard it first on Moone Boy. I am from the US.
Shaun Murphy so fucking what!!!
Gay was also well known and loved in the Manchester area as he also announced for Granada tv
DAY OFF!!!!
I woke up in Sydney this morning. I lashed on the radio and automatically expected to hear this jingle. I was at home as a kid in my head for about 10 seconds before I snapped out of it.
Man Elegant shut up misery guts!
Rip to a legend he is badly missed
Heard Gaybo mention this on his Lyric FM show today.
Moone Boy brought me here
The moment of the Gay Byrne show I always remember was when he gave the recipe for Christmas Cake and he started talking in a very ballistic manner during the course of that broadcast.
Hit play at 2:28.Commercial break... Reminds me of the school days :)
As Orson Welles said of Jackie Gleason: quite simply, “The Great One”. May he rest in peace.
reminds me of going to school.....
Pulling a Sicky
Ahhh ‘memberberries
And you can't get it on Spotify either (which is a bad thing).

Ar dheis atá a anam dhílis, coladh-sábh Gaybo
