I don't think I ruined it, but I do like both versions of the drawing, with and without color. I am definitely going to keep experimenting with adding color, especially since I spent so many years shying away from it. But that won't be all I do, I'll still do black and white drawings........ I want to do everything! But there are only so many hours in the day! It's difficult!

I was right. It's great. Reminds me of something out of Howl's Moving Castle. The dark blue takes out some of the detail of the line work, but I like blue, so it works for me.

I’ve always been a fan of your ink doodles but something about your exploration with colour through the watercolour medium is massively satisfying for me. P.S shoutout Squarespace for continuing to sponsor your videos, I know you’ve talked recently about views dwindling but I’ve been here for 10+ years and will continue to stick around as long as you still make videos, truly hope you can continue supporting yourself with it for the foreseeable future because you’re one in a million.

I liked both versions! Your line work is beautiful as always, but when you added the color it took on a graphic novel look. It made me happy to look at and imagine what story was going on in it. Thanks for sharing so much with us over the years. I always look forward to your videos! 🙂 Also, I think it is only natural to struggle with new mediums vs our comfort zones. It’s human nature regardless of hobby or profession to be uncomfortable trying something out of our “norm” in my experience. But when it comes to art I think it’s important to try new things anyway so we don’t become stagnated. It is important for growth and joy!

$45! That's highway robbery. Hubby and I trim each other's hair to save money. I haven't been out to get hair done since my wedding...some 28 years ago... back then, I thought the $15 was expensive. The transformation can jar a bit as you lose detail, but I love the way you used the watercolour, and it turned out cohesive and appealing. The line drawing turned out nice and it's also nice with color. I like them both.
It's ok to struggle with how to feel about the relationship with nature.
There's a place for giving the grass a haircut, but there's a place for letting the plants just be magnificant and look wild.
All plants at one point were weeds. People just decided which ones were not weeds.
I have lots of animal friends who live around where I live and every time I get my lawn mowed the rabbits sit in my yard and glare at me and I have to appologize for cutting the grass. It makes me feel bad. But there are rules here about keeping lawns nice. City councils don't care what the rabbits prefer on their dinner menu.
Anyway, I enjoyed the song. It was lovely.

Looks good! Like the comic book art I've been watching being created. David Finch is a good one to watch for that in quite a few mediums. He always has a fully inked drawing before coloring it. I think he prefers acrylic so that subsequent washes don't lift previous ones. A tree falling in the woods provides an opening in the canopy so light can get to new growth. It also contributes to the soil for that growth. A continuation of life in harmony that we flatter ourselves with the idea that we interfere. The timeframe of these things is longer than our attention span. Life finds a way.

I was thinking about the topic of contrast, and colour. Naturally black on white is high contrast, but when you have a lot of black and white the contrast diminishes, so by using colour in certain areas you do gain contrast between black and white areas, and black and coloured areas.... So I think colour can help in that regard. I should also addd that some of my favourite artworks are just black and white with minimal use of one or two colours.

Also, xeriscaping is where it's at. There are several houses on our block with native plants in place of grass. One with huge shrubs and even a little dry creek bed looking thing, like some canyon of Southern Utah. I want to do it at our place but my hubby is a traditionalist so we have grass and garden flowers. Vegs in one corner.

As an artist who works with ink, and people always ask if I am going to 'color in' my ink art, watercolor can be tough. Even with good, fast drying ink, it tends to muddy up the picture in certain spots. It can look nice for certain pieces, but the tighter your pen work is, the worse the water colors will make it. The dark blue areas in your work for example the lines are harder to discern, taking away from the finer details.

Honestly watercolor, in my experience, is the most forgiving medium. Personally i have never used a brand of watercolor paint that couldn't be removed, even after drying, with a little work by re-wetting and soaking up the pigment and water with a towel or even a dry and clean brush. Some pigments require a little extra work and attention to remove without damaging the paper or surface you are working on but generally they are removable. Even with graphite or charcoal, I usually can't get every last bit up when I erase something but watercolor is much more forgiving from my experience. Thats why it's so fun using watercolor to do super quick loose paintings in like a 10 or 20 minute window.

I work similarly, but with two differences you might want to consider:
    1. Way less detail in the original pen & ink. Then COMPLETE it, not just decorate it, with color. Maybe use a dark gray ink instead of black.
    2. Avoid using black paint. Remember: Wayne Thiebaud said shadows are blue.

Hey Peter, great art as always, I really like how the watercolors turned out!
To your thoughts about "weeds" and grass, I really like where you mind wandered, and I'm of the belief we should be learning to live with nature (as we are part of it) instead of going against it.
You could look into so-called "ground covers" instead of having regular grass that does get too tall. Maybe with some native flowers or other beneficial plants attracting some pollinators and other beauty.
Nature's been great inspiration and I always highly admired it, it always saddens me to see the desctruction we are imposing on it, at the scale we do.
If you are interested in this topic ,I would recommend you to look into the whole field of "Permaculture" which doesn't focus solely on plants but has a broader meaning involving "culture" as a whole.

When you have a haircut you like, take a picture of yourself, and bring it in with you next time! (If the back is unexpected from the front, take a back photo too.)
Relatable gardening rant... I like the look of nature as it is, even the fallen down bits with new life growing from them and all of that "mess." It's life, it's beautiful. And I feel like I impose enough of my clean, square, structured will on the house. I wish I could let my yard be more free but I live in the city with all its rules. :-/
I think you'll value honest opinions on the watercolor, so mine is that I have mixed feelings on it. Some of it I quite like and other places the line work (which I really enjoyed on its own, as I always do with your art) feels like it gets a bit lost or muddled. This could be an issue more with YT compression, I'm not sure, or maybe something about the line density and how it interacted with the layering of the watercolor. Anyway I do know that I want to see you do more of it. I understand the fear of ruining something you're happy with and it's very cool to see you going for it anyway.
"Starry Night" piece was beautiful, and you seem more confident in your movement, good job practicing! It was lovely to listen to. And thank you for including the composer, I think I'd like to learn it now.
You always shine a bit of light into my day. Thank you
