- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.

Haley Fohr's voice is built for cathedrals, but we'll take a funeral chapel. In Circuit des Yeux's Tiny Desk (home) concert - recorded amid the sepia-toned stained glass of the historic May Chapel at the Rosehill Cemetery and Mausoleum - Fohr's operatic, four-octave vibrato contains a wondrous terror, but also an illumination of being.
This unique setting is not merely a venue for the Chicago experimental music scene that Fohr calls home, but also a reflection of Circuit des Yeux's latest album, -io. In it, Fohr explores how grief not only shapes people but transforms them - that death (of self, of a loved one, of an idea) is not a finality, but an opening. On "Vanishing," she brandishes a 12-string acoustic guitar distorted to disastrous peaks, matched only by blown-out drum fills and a string trio searing Fohr's ecstatic arrangements into sublime chaos. "Dogma" follows with a spaghetti-western riff, like an existential biker gang grooving to chirping synths and Fohr's deep howl: "Tell me how to feel real / Talk talk talk talk talk talk about what's real."
Much of -io was written on the organ and piano, instruments that allowed Fohr to expand her sonic universe. This set closes on the balcony's organ with "Stranger," a song ultimately about empathy, and accompanied only by Andrew Scott Young, who bows an upright bass behind the pews. At the climax, Fohr's voice rips across the vaulted ceiling as if to split the chapel in half, and we're left in the wailing's wake.

I happened to catch Circuit des Yeux in San Francisco when she opened for Julia Holter. I remember how all of us were milling about and laughing at the bar until Circuit des Yeux sang her first note. From that moment until the very end of her set, she had the entire room's full undivided attention. She was alone onstage with just her incredible voice and her 12-string guitar and it remains the most powerful concert experience I've ever had.
Similar here but it was in a cathedral. This powerful voice and she never looked up. All you could see was hair. Bought my first album oh hers immediately after from the lady herself.
instead of spending time glueing leaves to one's eyelids spend more time on making better music!
I remember having the same experience the two times I saw her live, the first was intense from the beginning to the end. the second she opened for Psychic TV, very short set, but she made the most of every minute.
That is like a dream lineup for me.
Same here. Saw her supporting Julia Holster at Manchester Cathedral and have been hooked ever since
I am so glad this kind of music exist and is out for people to stumble across. Thanks to everyone involved.
This performance of Stranger is one of the best moments in NPR broadcasting.
Was lucky enough to see this phenomenal singer perform before Black Midi played in St Louis and I still can’t get over how amazing of a performer she is. Simply mind blowing and a great way to start a show!
This woman never ceases to amaze, ever since seeing her perform way back in early 00's
This is hauntingly, beautiful, and emotional. A true artist which causes some people to be afraid of the unknown. Quit focusing on the frickin' leaves. I would love to see her and the band in concert.
Reminds me of Scott Walker and that's a good thing.
Her voice is serving!!!
Simply beautiful. Transports you to a different place. Exactly where I want to be.
The most exciting musician working today. Absolutely astonishing albums one after another.
WOW ! Super great raw sound , guitar hurts and basdrum skin lovley. with string , cool place .
If you didn't know, Circuit Des Yeux means Circuit Of Eyes in English.
La
Increible, tan unica su voz y la música. Jugando con un monton de recursos y desafiando las convenciones
Absolutamente estan defiando todo en este concierto..
This like is given for Andrew Young Scott, the most nicest guy and Bassplayer everr😃🤗
That was incredible.
Loved this
thats awesome! i didnt know them. what a great sound
Her voice is divine providence
beautifully shot.
Excelente, no los había escuchado, pero son muy buenos. Soy tu fan #1
I love when a singer explores her "deep voice" register. Rare enough to point it out.
Me too, but it seemed really out of place in the song..
instead of spending time glueing leaves to one's eyelids spend more time on making better music!
Instead of spending time writing dozens of spiteful comments under a video you don‘t like - spend more time on watching things you do like. Or even better: make your own music, do something creative, something constructive.
Not since Alison Moyet have I sat up and listened like this ❤️
supreme!
Gorgeous 🌹❤️
So, I saw this band at Thalia Hall last night. I had to leave early because my best friend is a real early-to-bedder, but oh my goodness. I was transported and inspired. Exciting, original. So much beauty and talent. Thank you.
You should've stayed!
Sounds are infinite
wowzers
00:14 Vanishing
04:44 Dogma

Astonishing as always...
instead of spending time glueing leaves to one's eyelids spend more time on making better music!
ya pretty nice
🖤
i heard the first few seconds and had to think about how awesome a collab with lindemann would be
If you love this, check out Whispering Sons. A Belgian band with a singer that has more or less the same deep voice.
The modern version of Lene Lovich
Beautiful performance but the video itself is overly produced. It doesn't feel or sound like a tiny desk concert.
well said. the music sucks as well.
@@RobertSlover wow Rob, you’re on a mission. If you don’t like the music, listen to something else.

"What Instrument do you play?"

the music sucks.
I'll coment on every NPR video possible, until they bring Artur Menezes
Opeth meets indie and opera?
I wanted to slit my wrists until I heard all of this. My emotions relieved 😌
really?....this did it for ya? try some bach!
@@RobertSlover What's the matter dude, just let people enjoy what they like
@@cacaman1391 most people are idiots.
I was waiting for Kate Bush to prance out…
YO, TDC, where is @SMINO. Soooooo many turrrrible TDCs but still NO smino. Quit trippn, ftfr
Elizabeth Holmes started a band?
Great music, but sad sign of the times to see artists playing music masked (especially in such an open space).
Respect their freedom
Obviamente no es para cualquiera.
It is a sign they are responsible and care for each other.
Do you think just because the space is big that means anything when they are sat 1 meter apart from each other? The space can be as big as you want but if you breath into each others mouths it doesn't matter. It's the right thing to do and sets a good example for others.
It's called respect for others. It protects life, the same as a helmet on a bike and seat belts in a car... grow up.
Yikes...
Quite overproduced and very Anna Calvi-like :|
I don't know man. I don't really get what you're saying, but after the first time I think I like what I'm hearing.
Enough already with the masks. .
How does these people wearing masks in a CZcams video affect you?
Cognitive dissonance. Look it up.
instead of spending time glueing leaves to one's eyelids spend more time on making better music!
While this music is not really my cup of tea, I fully respect their performance. I am pretty sure she makes exatcly the music she had in mind. I don't think spending more time on it would have made you like it more.
@@Xtremechecker cute anime giraffe video.....you are unqualified sir stay in your lane!
@@RobertSlover what, you don't like the video...? It's a good video :(
@@RobertSlover It is also very very very old.
