    DISCLAIMER: I only show downtown Lawton and some of the east side. All of Lawton isn't run down, but most of it is. There are some nice spots on the west side of town and Pecan Valley is nice. Cameron University is located in Lawton and is a pretty good school for the region. PLEASE TAKE SOME MY CYNICISM AND CANDOR WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. THIS VIDEO IS NOT MEANT TO OFFEND.
    Let's take a trip down into Texoma, home of Lawton Oklahoma. A place I used to spend summers at as a kid. The town used to be prosperous and full of commerce but in recent years it's fallen on hard times? Is it the worst place to live in Oklahoma? Let's find out...

    Lawton, Oklahoma is the birthplace of Stephen Hillenburg (1961-2018), a marine biologist and the creator of Nickelodeon's most popular cartoon, SpongeBob SquarePants, who got his start in animation working with animator Joe Murray writing some episodes for Rocko's Modern Life in 1993.

    I enlisted in the Army 1986. I was stationed there from 86-89, back in the heyday of Malls and MTV. Yeah, I can't explain it either. Lawton has been special to me ever since. The lakes, Medicine Park, Meers. So many great memories, there's something about the sky in Oklahoma. I live near KC now, so not that far away, but the sky just isn't the same. I remember being outside for Physical Training (PT) early in the morning when the sun is thinking about getting up. All the colors would start to show, I swear it looked like the skies from "Vanilla Sky".

    I was born in Fort Sill and raised in Lawton; it was kind of a dump but I still have fond memories of it. I went to Tomlinson Junior High where we played football in Ron Stephens Stadium which was literally just a few blocks from my childhood home, graduated from Lawton High in 2004. I hung out with my friends at the Lawton Central Mall where we played Yugioh through all hours of the day. Braum's was/still is the best burger/shake joint I've ever had and was the hardest thing to let go of when I moved to Utah with my family 5 years ago.
    We came back to Lawton in July 2020 to bury my mother in accordance to her wishes to be laid to rest near HER mother in the Highland Cemetery. It was a rather bittersweet time but it was wonderful to see all of our old family friends who came to the service who still live there and catch up :)

    TY for posting this video , I haven't been back to Lawton since early 80's. I was born at Lawton memorial and raised across the street 14th from Harmon park. I was hoping to see if the jd pool's house was still there. My old home has been pretty much gutted and lots of water damage. Ron's Steven stadium was active in the 60's and 70's. Grade school jamboree football and Central Jr. High practice and home games.good old days.

    I graduated from LHS in 1984 (so I went to school in what is now "City Hall," but in the '80s, it was Central Junior High) ... and I also worked in that mall. I honestly never would've offered up the word "bustling" for this town, not even then. The mall might have been ... well, lively from time to time with teens coming through. I will say that I am surprised it has slowed to a crawl, since the local military base has taken on, not lost, a lot of soldiers. Ft. Sill is so full of new buildings that I barely recognize it when I drive through.

    • @RogueDog89
      @RogueDog89  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the reply Robbjmc2. I spent many summers ther as a kid and just remember the town being more prosperous. Didn't the government do some sort of a military drawdown in the 90's sometime and cut a lot of the operations that went on at Ft. Sill? I thought that was part of what helped kill a lot of the business. That and Walmart in my opinion. Cheers man!
      😀

    • @robbjmc2
      @robbjmc2 Před 3 lety +1

      @@RogueDog89 Well, yes, Central Mall helped kill downtown, and the Walmarts, as they tend to do, helped kill the mall and small businesses all over town. There was a big shutdown of military bases, but Ft. Sill actually benefitted from this because many soldiers from elsewhere were diverted there. I can only guess that Ft. Sill (with literally hundreds of new buildings on post) has become more self-sufficient? I have not been there since February of this year (and it's probably been many years since I visited before that). The family that I still have there are potentially leaving soon. It's tough to go back because it does seem emptier than I remember, but maybe that's a case of leaving for a big city and reality not living up to nostalgia.

    OMG! This just popped up and I wanted to defend my old hometown....but you are right. I moved to Texas in 1996. Grew up in Lawton and loved riding the bus to downtown in the 60s. There were 3 theaters downtown. We loved walking the streets window shopping, stopping at Ray's Pharmacy to get a hamburger and sundae, watching go-go dancers in the windows of bars. After Urban Renewal bulldozed our downtown, we lost our center. I was on the City Council from 1992-1994 and there was quite a struggle to move our city forward. The old farts won and the future of Lawton lost. It's a ghost town.

    The Bank First at 5:40 was Security Bank and Trust up until sometime in the 90's or 2000's. My grandfather worked there almost his entire adult life. He was a Loan Officer for many years, back when loans were given on a mans word and a handshake. I remember as a kid running around in the basement, where the vaults as well as the employee break area were. At one time they had a fully staffed kitchen to feed the workers since money was tight back then, even for bank employees. My grandfather retired as a Vice President right about the time they sold the bank. I lost him a few years back but I will always have fond memories of that building.

And there was no shortage of "Working girls" wanting a "date". They were walking the street in herds ! For only $35 they would take you back to a local hotel and get real friendly, real fast ! I'll admit, my 18 year old self did spend some time with them on every visit I had in that friendly little town.

I guess this video was meant to spotlight how the town has declined and the shitty decisions city leaders have made over the years. Honestly my intent is for the city leaders to see this, get really pissed off at my criticism and actually do something to make Lawton a decent town again. Everyone gets all defensive about Lawton until they really think about it. There’s always is “it’s a good town, but....”

    You're very helpful. My husband and I moved to Lawton in 1971 and bought a house our first week there. We paid $10,500 for it. I'd been considering buying a house there to rent to military families. We were only there for 18 months. We've moved many more times since those days and lived in lots of other states. I'm always looking at real estate, and Lawton is one of the places I've looked. Our kids and grandkids are all nearby now in another state some distance away; I know I wouldn't go to live far from them to live alone. My husband died three years ago. So I would truly be alone. I worked very briefly at Discount 425 Furniture, which I'm certain is now defunct. I remember the McDonald's on Gore having yellow lights to ward off the bugs, and there was no indoor seating. When we moved to Lawton, we made up our minds before arriving there that we were going to love it, and we did. Thanks so much for your insight about present day Lawton.
