I wonder what it must've been like.. Being a Frenchman in the 19th century. For impressionist painting and impressionist composing to match up so seamlessly, there must've been a shared underlying emotion washing through all of French society. Somber and melancholic, yet at peace and even hopeful.

Well, to be realistic, they were living what we would now consider the old "life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short" (Hobbes). Think of all the wonderful literature, music, and art we have today from tens of thousands of unique cultures, all available on the small, handheld device you are using right now. Globalization is the same "shared underlying emotion" to us, humanity, as impressionism was to the bourgeois, intellectual Frenchmen in the 19th century. And it is much more wonderful! We can enjoy centuries-old art right now and immerse ourselves in that period-for almost every single era in recorded human history. The Frenchmen could not do that.
I do totally get your longing for experiencing life in a different century, in a different country, even a different person, though. We call that nonexistent nostalgia Sehnsucht (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sehnsucht) historic nostalgia, or to put into more harsh terms, generational dysphoria, and it is certainly an amazing thing. Oh how I wish I could travel to worlds so different from mine I can hardly recognize a single thing.
But let's take respite in the fact that we can, even for a moment, relive the same awe kings, queens, nobles, and peasants of centuries past felt when they too read Shakespeare's plays, listened to Beethoven's works, and saw Raphael's paintings for the first time.

There is privilege in how I find beauty in humanity, inside the works of master artisans across history, their paintings captivating my imagination in much the same way music does; with rhythm, harmony and spirit bursting from every piece, from hip hop to blues, from Monet to My fathers work, but beauty does not end there. I find beauty in the faces of women, the style of architecture and planning; I find beauty in good conversations, the tastes of food and the feeling of wind. Such things make that which is ugly, beautiful, the intricacies of a decomposing corpse, how systems collide atop of systems to return what was once dirt to what it shall become again, dirt. To what end am I blessed to think such beautiful thoughts?

I get a very odd feeling from this period of history, it's simultaneously modern and old, at the very cusp of what I can relate to as a person. Not so old that society is completely different, but not quite modern enough that it is comparable to the industrial society of the early 1900's. An almost mystical time.

I had plans to go to the art institute in Chicago with someone a few years ago, but they didn't end up coming with, so I went by myself. I ended up spending my entire time there looking at the Impressionist paintings, listening to piano pieces by Debussy and Ravel since it only seemed appropriate lol. Une barque sur l'ocean was one of the pieces I listened to when I saw Cliff walk at Pourville (the second to last painting in the video). That was the day when I fell in love with impressionism and began to actually appreciate classical piano as a true genre of music filled with wonder and reverie, and not the genre of "old, dead people music". I currently have a canvas of Cliff walk at Pourville hung up in my room right above where my piano is.

Title of this video just gave me a cool idea for a story/movie of a person being able to teleport into paintings. Like one day they go to an art museum, and stare at a painting and suddenly find themselves immersed in the painting. He/she falls in love with a person in one of the paintings perhaps, and is saddened, cause the person in the painting can't leave.

i love classical music so much. and like its so sad because I don't think my generation will ever appreciate it for what it is. we learn about it in music class, chuckle about how they looked back then, and then move on. but honestly classical music *sounds* like a painting. if that makes sense. like it's so beautiful and gorgeous in that way. idk bruh but I just love it 😂

Hey man! I appreciate having been selected for this nice playlist! About my rendition of the Sibelius op. 75 no.5 at 8:50 to 12:00, I must say that it wouldv'e been appreciated if you asked prior to using my track in your video! I've worked and paid a cinematographer to produce my "videoclip" of the piece, which people are missing, and although the piece itself is public domain, our interpretation (I think I speak for most classical pianist) usualy equals years of practice and, isn't "free". Especially when there's a whole "video concept" that I tried to implement in my video, that people are missing since they only have the audio and not the visuals. Adding the link to just the video of Granen (not my channel) would actually be nice! This being said, I still appreciate having been selected. Maybe next time just take the time to ask! Cheers!! :)

Hello! Sorry for not asking permission before using your track. My purpose was only to show the music that I liked in the playlist to relate it to Monet and that is why I also put the performers as credits (since almost no one or no one puts it in the timestamps). At the time I made this playlist, I didn't think it would do any harm, so I used it ignorantly. I'll put the video link and timestamps in the description. Sorry again for what happened.
