CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jack (Jack Nicholson) forces Wendy (Shelley Duvall) into the bathroom, but she finds that she can't squeeze through the window.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" -- or, rather, a homicidal boy in Stanley Kubrick's eerie 1980 adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel. With wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and psychic son Danny (Danny Lloyd) in tow, frustrated writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as the winter caretaker at the opulently ominous, mountain-locked Overlook Hotel so that he can write in peace. Before the Overlook is vacated for the Torrances, the manager (Barry Nelson) informs Jack that a previous caretaker went crazy and slaughtered his family; Jack thinks it's no problem, but Danny's "shining" hints otherwise. Settling into their routine, Danny cruises through the empty corridors on his Big Wheel and plays in the topiary maze with Wendy, while Jack sets up shop in a cavernous lounge with strict orders not to be disturbed. Danny's alter ego, "Tony," however, starts warning of "redrum" as Danny is plagued by more blood-soaked visions of the past, and a blocked Jack starts visiting the hotel bar for a few visions of his own. Frightened by her husband's behavior and Danny's visit to the forbidding Room 237, Wendy soon discovers what Jack has really been doing in his study all day, and what the hotel has done to Jack.

The camera in sync with his axe movements is just awesome
If I remember correctly, Kubrick himself hopped on the camera for this scene.
the camerawork in general in this film is some of the best i’ve ever seen
Great point
Groundbreaking cinematography from John Alcott.
@@micahjohansson7573 well yes the cinematography was incredible!!! But the camera moves were purely Kubrick. The man knew how to helm a camera
She should've gotten an Oscar for her performance in this movie. Unforgettable.
It really revs my engine if you know what I mean
Unfortunately, she was nominated for a Razzy for worst actress...😢
jesus i thought it was horrible
LOL 😆 She ended up winning a Golden Razzie instead (which they eventually rescinded)
@@samueljeshurunlamechp9894 That's true - however, over time whoever is in charge of "The Razzie's" rescinded her nomination (or her win - I've forgotten) after learning of the mental, emotional and physical torture she was forced to endure during the making of this film. Small consolation in retrospect. Poor Shelly Duval has lost her damn mind, sadly.
Shelly Duvall's performance in this scene is crucial. The absolute look of fear and terror in her face as the axe finally breaks through the door is what makes this scene so terrifying. Shelly's portrayal of Wendy is outstanding and often gets overlooked (no pun intended there).
Let it be known that she was actually abused by Kubrick during the filming of the movie
agree to much focus on jack, shelley was brilliant
Tbh though I found all 3 of them brilliant my favourite was Danny and second was Wendy. It might have to do with the fact that they're more likeable as characters but still loved them.
they harassed and abused her to get to this performance level. inhumane, for the sake of ... art?
@@jarenagra2804 I feel that that narrative takes away from Shelley's performance somewhat... Shelley was capable of portraying Wendy period. That narrative almost attempts to take her performance away from her.

Fun fact : the line " Here's jonny! " wasnt in the original script . he improvised it :)
What was the original line of dialogue?
Yeah what was it? I still don't understand where the name "Johnny" came from
Must of had something to do with the three little pigs since he was quoting them during the scene.
Jack Nicholson must have been a big Johnny Carson fan (Since that is where the phrase came from) and he just decided to improvise it in the scene.
maybe jack is just short for johnny
The way Shelley screams as Jack axes the door is so chilling and realistic. I could feel her character’s terror and fear. Unfortunately I witnessed my mother in a very violent relationship with my alcoholic, abusive father as a child…and this scene always brings back that feeling of tense fear, doom, and terror I felt from my mom 😔 extremely chilling and very well acted!
Kubrick told the whole staff to treat Shelly like trash. He wanted her as defeated mentally and physically as possible for this role. Imagine showing up to work and just being treated like garbage. Then to shoot scenes like this. It definitely helped but she needed some therapy in the end for a few years.
You need a hug man?
You aren't too bright, are you?
@@copbabycombo1311 Why would you say that?
@@WS-gj8ng Naw but thanks for suggesting it 😁
All those "fun facts" probably weren't fun for Shelley when she was living through it. But you can't help but admire her toughness. Many other actors would've broken down and even walked off the set and quit, if they had to deal with what Kubrick was putting her through.
They have gotten annoying. People who state them seem to be in heat and thirsty for likes.
I'm gonna kill Kubrick...
That's actual torture.
(I also feel bad for Nicholson, because while he was rehearsing, he was forced to eat the one thing he hated for two weeks straight: Cheese sandwiches.
I'm glad Shelley's doing so much better, now and she's happily living out her retired life. She deserves it after all her hard work for 3 decades

Duvall was nominated for worst actress. Funny because her acting is the most realistic expression of fear I have ever seen in a movie.
Kubrick was also nominated worst director
standards have changed
Fun fact In some scenes she didn't act she was really afraid for her life
Its because they emotionally abused her on set, kubrick told the crew to just ignore her and other things. Its really sad that she was put through that
@@clamboy4059 Oh so they nominated those two because...something irrelevant from the final product.
Fun fact: To get Jack Nicholson in the right agitated mood, he was fed only cheese sandwiches for two weeks, which he hates.
Wow didn't know that. But Kubrick didn't need to go that far (with the bat scene that took 127 tries just to get Shelley rly exhausted just for a scene) my opinion

Amber Heard 😂
I’ve never seen The Shining and somehow some scenes in the movie I’ve seen on CZcams don’t scare me. I also just turned 22
@rachel_a_whisman17 well it's not about jumpscares but about the atmosphere as a whole. The isolation the dread. You won't have that in 2 minute clips.
Shelley Duvall's acting was amazing here, and in my opinion totally spot on. Every swing Jack took was a declaration of his willingness to kill his family. Every time the axe met the door, Jack could have stopped. Everytime Shelley screamed for help, Jack could have walked away. Imagine being cornered into a small bathroom in a snowed-in hotel in the middle of nowhere, and the only thing you can hear is the snowstorm outside and the loud CRUNCH of an axe breaking down the only barrier between you and your crazed husband. THAT is terror.
She's imagining that axe tearing through her own body and what it would feel like, the torture, and reacting to it appropriately. Some (if not THE) best acting I've ever seen in a horror film.
@@Lefeurouge Why would she have to imagine axe tearing through her body when that's not in the scene?? She only has to act a terrified woman being approached by the Axe Man.
@@Vishnu_Karthik I'm saying that that's what's in Wendy's mind. I can see that (at least *I* can) from the way her body is reacting to the scene. It's just my impression.
She didn’t know Jack was a fireman irl and they told her they were gonna use a prop axe and door, when they started the scene she saw the real blade of an ace burst through the door and thought Kubrick was going to murder her for the perfect shot, so her face was pure terror thinking she was going to die, she believed it after all she went through in filming; yelling for Jack(Jack Nicholson not the character) to stop. Thats why her acting here is phenomenal.
She actually wasn’t acting in this scene cuz like she endured a lot of pain both mentally and physically from the filming of the shining and I think jack improvised a couple lines that made her more scared? I dunno I just know that she was actually crying and scared

Prolly among the most iconic in all of cinematic history at that, and online meme culture today will ensure it will be a gift that keeps on giving... forever and ever! 🤣🤣🤣 Speaking of Kubrick not knowing who Johnny Carson was, you can't fault him for that as he lived in England for so long by then! And ask just about any person outside North America what comes to mind first when they here that phrase, and the answer will almost always be Jack Nicholson axing a door! 😎💪🪓

@@nossenkanter not for this role
Fun fact: before getting into acting, Jack Nicholson worked as a fireman, either part time or full time idk. But they originally used a stunt door for this scene and they had to switch to a real door because he chopped the stunt one too easily.

Honestly, before people call her "overly dramatic" you have the think about what you'd do in that situation. I mean seriously, I wouldn't be worried about how perfect my scream was, I'd trying to make as kuch noise as humanly possible to alert somebody else who could help me or make my husband try to stop. This felt so real, she felt terrified.
And even worst is this scene alone scared her pretty bad
As much as I hate how people will call her overly dramatic, I also dislike the argument of "you'd do the same" because that's not true for everyone. Different people react differently to stressful situations. I get what you're saying but idk it's just annoying to me, or maybe I just need some sleep. I'm pretty tired rn
The reason why it was so real, is because she wasn't told about this part. She legit got terrified. No one told her about this part and since this movie, she said she suffered PTSD for a while because of it.
She thought she was actually going to get hurt, as if Jack was going to hurt her for real.
I think when she was saying "JACK!" she wasn't saying the character. She was calling for Nicholson to stop.
She actually got psd from this nobody told her about this part she was legit terrified that's why it was so real feeling cause it was
What so when she cuts his hand that's real?

Rama Sharma no he’s right because this movie was in 1980 and the Doctor Sleep movie is in November of 2019 so it would be 39 years not 40. Unless it was delayed/pushed back to 2020 then you would be correct but since nothing like that was announced he’s still right.
@@ramasharma309 1980 is not 40 years ago, do your research.
@@markchester9961 the film was made in 1979. Came out in 1980
True story
You can literally feel the terror radiating of Wendy/Shelly Duvall. Such great acting.
Apparently she was abused by the director to act right.
Subooking that’s just wrong.
@@phantomking7246 Yeah but I guess it's true. Look it up.
She was completely in the dark about this scene when it first came on, and she was showing true terror when he broke through the door.
Jobclown1 actually it wasn’t acting, she didn’t know Jack was going to do that so that was her natural reactiob
This movie is so so so so excellent
Her acting is so amazing.
She´s not acting. Shes terrified for real - She didnt know what to expect on that scene. Kubrick pushed her too far all the time
Kovenantti I meant in general throughout the entire film. Some people think she sucks, but the casting couldn't have been better.
Kovenantti how do you know?
Kovenantti she was acting for sure
+PartyCrasher04 She looked sincerely terrified!
Fun fact: even after a dozen comments pointing out, people still feel the need to say "Here's Johnny" was improvised
LMAO
Fun fact: 'here's Johnny' was improvised, it wasn't originally there in the script.
@@gaurav0883 U DONT SAY?!
Actually, the “Here’s Johnny” part was improvised by Nicholson
The Enygma did you know that the “here’s Johnny” part was COMPLETElY improvised!?

such an iconic scene
This 2 minutes scene is better than today,s horror movies.
Easily
But today's horror games are amazing. Resident Evil really made a comeback in recent years.
It chapter one was good not scary but good
Doctor sleep was good

Still one of the best horror movies I've ever seen fr
Iconic movie and one of my favorite horror movies for sure 👍
To everyone who isn't familiar with this movie. The line "Here's Johnny!" Is from the Johnny Carson show. Every time the show would start the announcer would say "Here's Johnny. It was popular around the time of this movie.
Duncans Cool Exotics and Plants oh how interesting, I had no idea. Good to know, thanks
Ceci Velazquez You're welcome
a kid in africa that lives in a pit Yes, Jack Nicholson said it without cue. But it was from The Johnny Carson Show.
Here. 1974. The announcer says "Here's Johnny". This was before any production on "The Shining" began.

a kid in africa that lives in a pit what are you talking about?
The acting here (caused by the stress by the director), she didn’t deserve that treatment, but the screaming and dread she shows in this scene is seriously deep and personal to me cause of how real it looks, she’s one of those actors in movies and tv shows, that make me inspired to become an actor myself I mean my god, I’m sorry but in this scene she’s the star of the show, this acting was so powerful and emotional. Applause to Shelly Duval. I love her.
it wasnt acting, it was genuine fear
@@macey-loupilgrim-gree3578 it was acting, the idea that Shelly duval was abused is a myth
You hush
@@macey-loupilgrim-gree3578 Genuine fear for what? That the actor Jack Nicholson was going to murder her with an axe? Come on 💀
like the acting is insane here but so much sadder because of all the abuse shelley duvall went through in order to get that shot.
The music is perfect in this scene too.
A legendary film emerged with its actor and director. The players showed their mastery. The door breaking scene shows that he is a master who can use the axe.
Me if no-one answers their door on Halloween
