  • The Old Bazar of Pokhara comes alive in vibrant festivities as it celebrates Gathamuga, also known as Gathemangal, a cherished local festival. Annually, on the auspicious day of Shrawan Krishna Chaturdashi, which falls on the 14th day of the waning moon in the Shrawan month, this joyous occasion takes center stage. Gathamuga Chahre or Ghantakarna Chaturdashi are alternate names for this grand event.
Notably, the festival holds significance beyond mere merriment. It is revered as a time to purify one's home and surroundings, engaging in puja (prayers) to safeguard against malevolent spirits.
The precise origins of the festival remain shrouded in the mists of time. However, the earliest recorded mention of its celebration can be traced back to the Lichhavi era, as documented in the ancient handwritten manuscript known as the Gopal Raj Vamshavali.
One of the central highlights of Gathamuga is the collective ritual in which people from diverse communities come together to ignite a straw effigy of the dreaded demon, Ghantakarna. This ritual constitutes the fundamental essence of the festival. Yet, the festival's lore is filled with fascinating details about the demon and the various customs and traditions surrounding this ancient celebration.
