I have no idea why, but I get choked up during this scene and I am an atheist. I guess it reminds me of my childhood and how there are many ways to inspire people religious or otherwise.
I don't know why but all the times I watched this movie I cried and smile at the same time when they sang. It's my second favorite movie. I Feel an emotion I can't explain.
I'm a metalhead in my late thirties. This kind of music is not my jam. Haven't watched the movie since I was a kid. I listen to this song all the time. This vocal arrangement kicks so much ass it actually brings tears to my eyes.
I have wonderful memories of this song. This was one of my moms favorites. Totally her style and always made her so happy. She's passed now, and re-watching it is definitely bitter-sweet. I miss our times sitting in our old living room just being happy and singing along.
Aww, it's the same for me and my Dad! He showed me this movie when I was a kid and now it has such a special place in my heart, I can almost imagine us sitting on our sofa together watching
I love this scene. The vocals were perfect! They sounded exactly as I would expect a chorus of nuns who were learning how to really sing for the first time, in their first performance, would sound. The storyline of a Las Vegas singer hiding out in a convent is excellent. But I have, and have always had, one criticism of the movie over all. This scene is perfect, but the reason it is perfect is because they took a wonderful Catholic hymn and be-bopped it into a genuine 1960s girl group rocker. I believe they should have continued with that effort all through the movie. Whoever had the balls to turn Oh Maria into this outstanding performance could have done the same with any number of other traditional tunes. Instead they turned a bunch of actual 1960s girl group hits and repurposed them. I thought this was an opportunity lost and I can't help thinking how much better the movie could have been if they did that. I still love the movie, but if we got that version this movie would still be playing in theaters 30 years later. Well, maybe not. But you get my meaning.
this scene shows the power of music sung in pure joy, it got strangers to come into a church they've passed by hundreds of times without a second thought. The priest did what you're supposed to do welcomed them with open arms.
As an adult, I am crying with chills because this takes me back to a specific happy memory from my childhood. Literally top 3 fave songs from the movie😭💜

In my 30s, not religious, but no matter how many 100s(?) of times I watch this I get goose bumps every time. I think that it's the way Whoopi's character would usually be someone that they would look down on, but instead they are inspired by her, and that she found a really meaningful way to make the best of her terrible situation. Making grumpy old ladies have fun is always a winner!
I am a 90ss baby and I watched this movie well over many times.Never knew the lyrics or anything passed it of being a Hymn. This scene reminds me of me with being with that street crew(of course years down the line). This movie put me on to Jesus at an early age, even though I went my own way for many years.I would play this movie all the time. This movie will always be a stepping stone for me and I cherish every moment of this.
Amazing how sounds can raise such strong emotions within us. That sound is the wonderful world of music. The older I get, the longer the list of songs that get to me, from many kinds starting with a 3-piece band up to and including an orchestra of over 100 members, the good examples will move you. I have to go and listen to some.

I Would have to agree with you, because I think that Kathy Najimy is So Hilarious, she's just Amazing in this Movie, then she was in the 1993 Disney Movie, Hocus Pocus, and in the 1991 Movie Fried Green Tomatoes, and so is Mary Wikes (God Bless and Rest her old Soul), also those two altar boys were just boogying down, and that Reverend was welcoming new people in was awesome, and that look on Dame Maggie Smith's Face was priceless.
Kathy Naijimi, Whopee Goldberg and Wendy Makkenna did a very great Job ! I like the whole story as I am brought up by christians and was well integrated in our community as a boyscout , choir singer and gospel band drummer !

Sister Mary Clarence shows that non traditional music is heard in the heart too. And she fills the church.
