00:00 Budget Cashmere Introduction
When you consider that cashmere is one of the original “luxury fabrics” The notion of “Budget Cashmere” seems like an obvious contender for our Myth or Magic Series. By the end of this video, we’ll have fully investigated the claims of Budget Cashmere. So ewe needn’t be sheepish when it comes to this topic
01:08 What’s the Hype Around Cashmere?
Often touted for its decadent texture and incredible softness in hushed tones of reverent wonder. “Cashmere” refers generally to both the fibers and fabrics that are constructed from the fleece of cashmere-producing goats. This fleece consists of two parts: the extremely fine and delicate down layer and the thicker and rougher guard hairs.
Cashmere is noted for being extremely soft but durable and Insulating but not stuffy. As such it’s very popular for sweaters, vests, robes, mittens, scarves, ties, socks, and even suits.
Cashmere is harvested in two main methods:
→ 03:50 Combing Method
→ 04:07 Shearing Method
The Combing Method is much more labor and time-intensive but it produces cashmere that is superior to Shearing Harvest cashmere.
05:41 Budget Cashmere Tactics: 1. Lack of Fiber Information
09:23 2. Imprecise Fiber Information
12:55 3. Blending Fabrics
14:09 4. Milling & Manufacturing Hacks
16:20 Fast Fashion & the Environment
The most serious implication of Fast Fashion, and Budget Cashmere, involves their contributions to “Throw-Away Culture” and environmental destruction.
To reduce costs by increasing the supply of cashmere, goat-herders are pressured to raise massive, unsustainable flocks that do tremendous damage to local environments.
Furthermore, because it has to cut corners to be cheaper, the propensity for Budget Cashmere to tear, stretch, and pill means Budget Cashmere products have to be constantly thrown away and replaced, filling up landfills and exacerbating the demand, and destruction, of Budget Cashmere production.
18:23 Our Experiences: Nathan Price
19:42 Preston Schlueter
20:21 Conclusion: Myth or Magic?
We find it to fall largely in the “Myth” category. Selling lower-quality cashmere at a lower price is like pulling a coin out of your own pocket but expecting people to react as if you pulled it out of someone else’s ear.
Cashmere, contrary to popular opinion, comes in ranges of quality. It would be genuine magic for Budget Cashmere companies to have somehow found a way to drastically reduce costs on a product that is extremely time and labor-intensive without sacrificing quality
Overall, then, we’re not going to go so far as to say that you should uniformly refuse to consider buying budget cashmere, as everyone’s priorities (and pocketbooks) are different. But as with most things, remember that you do get what you pay for.

I love how Preston's puns are supposed to be bad but are actually very good! :)
Everybody gangster until gentleman’s gazette calls out Uniqlo
In some cases a blend of silk and decent cashmere can be very desirable, the silk increases strength, and thus durability, as well as 'body' or stiffness, whilst still being a skin friendly, natural fabric.
Cashmere keeps you about 8 times warmer than any other fabric and it really shows in the Winter.
I was wearing a Cashmere Dress from mongolia (I dont think it's the highest quality) but when I forgot my coat in the car and we had to wait for 1 hour outside, oh yes...I noticed how Cashmere kept me warmer than any other fabric....like magic. I think that's the whole purpose of Cashmere
Could you make a "101 Wine", "101 Art" etc. or a "101 what every aspiring Gentleman needs to know"? Or could you recommend any sources on that?
That's a great idea
The Modern Rogue channel on youtube has some good information on similar topics off the top of my head I know they have several videos on Whiskey, Cigars, Pipe smoking, Cocktails, etc. Also most of those videos include a guest that is an expert in that field.
great idea!
We buy grade A cashmere fibre from Mongolia for about 140-150 USD/Kg usually at 15.5 microns avg, but it being a short fibre, we lose some during dyeing, combing, spinning and weaving in-house. We supply indirectly to few of the brands mentioned above, and they usually use grade B for sweaters and grade A for scarfs, depends on if it’s next to skin or not. Blends are not always to cut cost and it increases avg length and helps us process cashemere.
I appreciate all the content you present and I wish you and your company every success. It's such a pleasure to know there is still quality to be found.
OK, we've established that budget cashmere is inferior compered to the better grades of cashmere, but how does it fare compared to the finer textured sheep wools, like Merino? For a light, layering sweater, which is the better buy-budget cashmere or a solid, middle-grade Merino?
Thank you very much for this. Very informative. Great job.
I absolutely love Preston's sweaters and cardigans. His style is probably my favorite of all the members.
This is my favourite type of content from GG. Great video Preston!
Club Room cashmere sweaters have been my mom's go-to Christmas gift for me for a while and up until the past 2 years, they've been great. I tried on a new color (salmon pink) in the store this year and noticed how incredibly thin they have become - I could see my undershirt through it. They finally cut a big corner on quality and I think I've got enough of the better ones in my closet now.
is Club Room a Macys brand?
@@roychefets1671 Yes.
Yes, I bought one this year and I can see my shirt thru it. I liked the sweater and decided to keep it. Too bad we can't find the same quality as before anymore.
I’ve been looking for a cashmere sweater, great and timely info.
Thanks for a most informative video.
Depressing, but most informative.
I got the same v neck in navy. I agree it does feel delicate to the touch but it works well and since I use it sparingly I tend to keep mine for awhile.
Came for the cashmere info, stayed for the Preston puns 😎
My dream blend would be 70% cashmere/30% cotton. It thus poses an issue for the market because such a blend would be very hardwearing...
Explain?
I love genuine cashmere. All right, I'm ready to learn something new
We hope you found it enjoyable!
None of this is specific to budget cashmere retailers. I have several Ralph Lauren Purple Label cashmere sweaters. I also have a Brunello Cucinelli cashmere sweater and I don’t remember any info of where it came from on the product pages. I’ve had those sweaters for about 7-8 years and they still look great, but I’m pretty sure they had no information about the cashmere on the tags or the product pages when I bought them. I have several cashmere blends from other brands that I have had for a while and they have held up well. I actually prefer the cashmere silk blends and think they hold up pretty well.
Thank you for the information. I have dozens of sweaters......all mostly merino wool. After this video, I would not assume to know about the quality of my Merino sweaters, but they are soft and warm. My wife brings me home sweaters from Kiev when she vacations there every year. She buys the from a retailer/factory company. These sweaters are attractive, not heavy, but suprisingly warm. Very nice colors too! For me....better to spend less money on a high quality merino, than "out of my budget" quality cashmere. ......also, after this video......I question if it would be a good idea to buy any cashmere if I came into money?
Thank you for clearing up that topic. I'm glad to have bought a nice sheer wool scarf for my brother and not getting fooled to buy a kashmir one for just a few bucks more.
where do you shop, that they accept bugs as payment? :D
@@36424567254 Yeah, dont you know the jungle? Bugs are precious xD
I’ve been wondering about this….
Yeah, same…
Good job on the video, very informative
Has anyone experience with the brand Luca Faloni? How is the quality?
An interesting piece - also like the Colour of the sweater you are wearing
i have some rlpl, loro piana, malo, B. Cucinelli and johnstons cashmere pieces. do they use high quality cashmere? where do i find info?
Going to Goodwill this weekend to get some new casual wear this will be my guide. Wish me luck that I find some gems In the sea of discarded clothes
I have found some absolutely lovely cashmere garments at thrift stores, for almost no $$$. Plus, I figure that if it still looks decent after it's been worn and washed enough for someone to donate it out of their wardrobe, it's bound to be decent-enough quality to hold up to anything I throw at it, lol. Talk about "budget" cashmere!
@@sonipitts Me too! I'm good with the cashmere I've found at thrift stores over the years.
I love the color of that magenta sweater
Thank you for raising awareness for the environmental impact of our purchase decisions. 🙏🏻✨Quality over quantity. Let’s hope this sentiment will prevail.
I have a jcrew cashmere herringbone sweater. Do like it a good bit. Let’s see how it lasts. If not long, it’s ok bc I got it on sale w my student discount. Was $110 but I paid about 35. I still prefer wool for environmental reasons but I really liked this design. Perhaps I will make it into gloves or a scarf if it begins falling apart.
T
I have told my family for years that cost is not a reason to purchase any particular item. I'd rather spend the money for quality then get a less expensive item. Which makes me a somewhat difficult client regarding clothing. That doesn't disregard fabric construction, material or fit.
FYI Saks Fifth Ave’s site has terrible descriptions, to the benefit and detriment of their products. For example, they don’t mention online that their 100% cashmere topcoat is made of Loro Piana fabric.
A Preston Puns compilation video is a must.
Now that is a useful video ✌️
Sgt. Preston, is the Man! He so cool! Enjoy his presentations!
Preston I must admit after viewing your video on budget cashmere and considering the options available this will certainly help me to make a more consumer conscience purchase and lessen the chance of being "cashed" out thanks for the video!😄
I can ALWAYS count on Fort Belvedere for true quality. They take pride in being the REAL McCoy... I ordered several cashmere V-necks this year from NADAAM, and Everlane, four in total. They're nice and overall pretty good cashmere sweaters, but I have pilling now on the Navy one, and you can kind of just tell that they are not....top top of the line. I knew it when I looked at the NADAAM catalogue only to see hoodies and sweat suits made out of the same cashmere for relatively low prices. I'm glad I purchased the V-necks...but that will be enough from those companies. I'd rather from now on, save up, pay more, get higher quality. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing that! It's very much appreciated.
Please do one video of what is the best cashmere
Thank you Preston!
I'd love a cashmere tie!
I bought a sweater at a thrift store where the labels say it's cashmere by Cesare Gatti. I dunno to trust it or not. It's a bit big so I wear it around the house in winter.
GG's puns have gone atomic lately 💪😅😅😅
I love puns, keep them up Preston.
My gratitude for you, gentleman
What do you guys think about Gentle Herd cashmere?
Thank you ❤
I enjoyed most of this video, unil you got to the portion on impact. Like many graded products the difference between high quality cashmere and low quality cashmere is often in the selection process. Just like the walnut bits and pieces are from the same orchards and the beautiful walnut halves the short fibers are often off the same goats as the long fibers, just from a different part of the body. Top end high quality cashmere as a result is just as responsible for the grazing and habitat degradation seen in Mongolia and Western China.
Yeah but the point is, you wont need to buy a new cashmere product for a while since genuine high-end cashmere are more durable. You cant stop the environmental impact but you can definitely slow it down.
@@royalgurung9694 well, things still go out of fashion. But the goat that makes the high quality sweater that will last for years is going to also yield other lower quality fibers that will make products that won't.
Hey Guys,
Once again thanks for an informative episode.
A couple suggestions for episodes: 1) handkerchiefs, 2) notebooks, and 3) budgeting.
These are all topics on which you've touched (directly or indirectly) in previous episodes but I think not enough information exists and could use an in-depth 'Gentleman's Gazette' treatment.

I get my cashmere outfits from Hermes and piana, no shortcut in good materials
What about the french Maison Montagut or the Italian Corneliani?
Your outfit looks great, Preston.
brunello cucinelli - is it worth it?
Budget It's the shorter thread from the goat there are other luxury fabrics - vicuna, mohair, angora, Sea-Island cotton and silk...
Hi I also have long coat white Alpaca with silk lin8ng
designer Christian Dior numbered Found both items high end resale shop. I don’t know anything on both these items. Have real are they and are they valuable 💕🙏💃🏾💵
What a shocker - apparently, you get what you pay for. Who would have thought it...
so what i got from this video is..if it cost more it should reflect the quality. if this is true think of BMW cars-they are expensive and they cost a lot to repair compared to Honda/Toyota but German cars are made with SUPERIOR parts, right? so why is that they're sent to the mechanic much more often compared to Japanese cars which are made with INFERIOR parts? at the end of the day every brand is out to pitch a sale to the consumer.
Really glad to see you highlighting the tremendous negative impact rampant demand for such things causes, Preston. Sod Cashmere, I'd rather buy something sustainable thanks.
Simple supply and demand.
The "sustainable" fibers are what's actually causing the problem... Your kind I what's wrong with this world .. instead of being on CZcams, you should read up on the emissions caused by "sustainable" fibers
At the price of high quality cashmere, I prefer high quality merino, it can be really soft, and how soft does one need a sweater to be ? Let alone ties, suits etc, there softness is useless imho.
Hi what’s with this cashmere coming from Mongolia cheap sweaters $75.00. NAADAM I think is name. Is this company for real should I buy or not 💕

guys can you make a video about camel hair.. is it worth buying?
When and if you guys ever reach 10 million subs or maybe 5 million, Some milestone you should do a video on vicuña and other extreme luxury fabrics and wools that costs as much as cars and sometimes houses.
some bussines are so bad with this, that hey call a sweater with 1 percent cashmere a cashmere sweater
budget cashmere is still great and feels lovely.
I bought a very nice overcoat that is 90% wool and 10% cashmere. It seems the cashmere in this case is simply a marketing tool.
It's endlessly frustrating when companies do that. But the durability of even quality cashmere sucks. Adding merino substantially increases the durability of the garment. Personally, once you get to about 30% cashmere, the feel is almost imperceptible from 100% cashmere unless you have exceptionally sensitive skin.
I’m glad you’ve mentioned the severe environmental impact cashmere has..This has certainly made me rethink wanting to buy a cashmere sweater, thank you!
if you dont recommend budget cashmere, wld you recommed people just stick with merino wool instead?
I bought my husband some merino wool sweaters this year from Jos. Banks, and they are outstandingly soft. I'm so jealous. The retail was $140, so not cheap but I bought them on sale.
@@edennis8578 sounds lovely! unfortunately i dont think we have jos banks here in the UK - ive been buying a lot of great merino wool knitwear from this UK-based brand called Paul James recently though, looks like I'll be sticking with them!

I love cashmere!
So all in all it turns out that it is better to invest in baby alpaca than in budget cashmere
I want a video about dressing gown.
This is the one for you! www.gentlemansgazette.com/pajamas-dressing-gown-guide/?
Did you mention recycle cashmere? It’s not easy to differentiate between high/poor quality.
After buying a baby cashmere crewneck from Loro Piana I can hardly wear other cashmere pieces...
I love cashmere but sadly it's becoming like the dinosaurs, extinct.
No store where I shop has it anymore.
because the image it portrays
@@johnnymartinez478 What image?
@@FoxyPercival714 Probably talking about vegans. They think that all animals are treated badly by humans, so they bad-mouth all animal products, including cashmere. Such ignorance. As demonstrated in this video, cashmere is sourced from animals that aren't mistreated. If they were mistreated, it would harm both the producers' bottom line and the quality of the cashmere.
Is it possible to tailor cashmere?
Suits, yes. Sweaters, also yes but it is very difficult and time consuming so few tailors will do it. You can learn to on your own though, I would recommend starting with a very cheap sweater, possibly thrifted so that mistakes aren’t costly. The thicker the yarn, the easier it is to work with using knitting needles. If it is very thin and fine, a sewing machine on certain settings can be used, but handsewing is probably better.
Me and Preston wear the same size.
Preston is awesome!
Preston is so punny 🤣
Didn't det my hands on anything better that Loro Pianas cashmere yet
It's funny to see how Uniqlo is a low end brand for clothes in America meanwhile here in the Philippines, Uniqlo products are something we save our money for 😂
Considered low end for cashmere but most Americans can not afford cashmere. Most Americans wear very cheap synthetics or synthetic blends
.... 8:46 best moment of the vid....
Have you begged for more free stuff from Spier Mackay since your last video?
I think out of wall these budget cashmere brands gobi looked most promising
Immediately demolished the like button for that pun.
I own two sweaters from Naadam Love them
Cashmere is very cheap and prolific in Nepal where it is called Pashina..I saw it everywhere in Kathmandu..
Buying directly from the source = budget cashmere?
Be careful while walking and don't wind up knee deep in sheep dip, as they say buyer beware. I just found out fast fashion isn't a new thing.
Nonsense..I have 1 cashmere from a so called famous Italian house and another one from a so called notorious American brand…neither of them specified the micron details etcccc..and lately I bot one from Uniqlo on sake for less than 100 usd which protect me as good as the first 2..bottom line we got ripped off and cashmere is cashmere
are you sure that cashmere is cashmere haha? Are you sure? Because it isn't. I would agree you probably don't get what you pay for, but there CERTAINLY is a difference between short length strand cashmere, and long strand cashmere. The length of the strands are the single most important factor in determining how durable it'll be. You say that you bought it 'lately'. Are you sure that you should form an opinion so quickly? Perhaps wear them every day for a season and let me know how that goes. You will certainly be able to tell a difference between short strand cashmere and long strand, because the short strand one is going to start developing a bunch of holes and pilling. That said, I'm not saying that you get what you pay for. That's why i end up just buying used quality name brands, like Johnston of Elgin, i just scored one for 30 bucks shipped and delivered online two days ago. That is normally a 200-600 dollars sweater. That's going to hold up a LOT better than uniqlo. They unfortunately just can't pay the same prices are johnston can for the long strand, brushed cashmere.
a blend achieves pilling
in what world is saks and Nordstrom is budget cashmere, one cost 140 bucks and the other costs 200 bucks
That's low end for men's cashmere sweaters.
And this video is the G.O.A.T. 😁
What do you think about wooden bowties?
Wooden bow ties? Not the ones for us! Stay tuned for an upcoming video all about bow ties!
@@gentlemansgazette I'm afraid I will have to disagree with you on that one, but I'm thrilled for the upcoming video
You’re right, but not even Loro Piana gives these details as a matter of routine. Sometimes I’ve seen it from them, but NOT always. The industry does not want the micron measurement to become the norm at the retail level. A wealthy buyer will not buy the cheap stuff anyway, and providing the microns will only deter the budget buyer.
Nonetheless, anyone buying the $55 “cashmere” sweater is still buying something at least equal to wool, as far as the material is concerned. Budget cashmere generally isn’t worse than wool (excepting specialty wool like some merino wools or Zegna’s 15 milmil 15.)
Honestly, I wouldn't buy cashmere for anything but beanies and scarves. Good cashmere is insanely expensive and it still won't last when exposed to regular use.
