Amen Thompson Scouting Report | 2023 NBA Draft Breakdowns

- Amen Thompson is one of the most talented prospects in the 2023 NBA Draft. A 6'7 guard with outlier athletic tools, playmaking prowess and defensive upside is an enticing combination. Real questions about the Overtime Elite pathway, his lack of shooting and relative age make him somewhat polarizing, but he has upside rivaling anyone not named Wembanyama and that'll keep hisinterest towards the top.

Hi rockets fans
Lmao
Hello
Hey hey 🤘🏿
Wsg
How you knew
I like Ausar better in terms of how his current skillset translates into a defined role. But I like Amen's ceiling much more. Ausar also has an incredible ceiling himself, not to take anything away from him. Amen just has a more complete game that raises his entire team's floor.
Ausar is much better defender. But the natural ability to create your own shots is what separates them. Ausar could be a better player but I could also see him becoming a really good role player. Amen looks like a more athletic version of SGA.
Pretty much my sentiments
He's a hard guy to comp. I've never seen any player with his combination of height, quickness, leaping ability, and point guard playmaking skills. Only a few 6'6", 6'7" guys have been this kind of freak athlete and they were all score-first wings, whereas I see Amen as a guy who could average 7+ assists per game, whether you want to call that a point guard or whatever. The closest thing I've been able to come up with as a comp is "taller John Wall", who when he came into the league couldn't really shoot, loved playing in transition, and was already a good passer. It's not perfect, because I think Wall had better ballhandling and a little more creativity around the hoop, and of course was several inches shorter, but it's the best I can do.
Skinnier Zion interms of athleticism but it’s really hard to compare him lol
His comp is not hard he literally a more athletic Ben Simmons there playstyle is similar
Penny Hardaway
@@Wrestle_Kingdom not at all
Could he develop into a SGA?
Amen is top level
Amen and Ausar are so special man. Can’t wait to watch them in the league
really like this incoming class, really high on the Thompson twins doing well at the next level... Another great video.
Yo just discovered your channel man, just wanted to say really great videos bro. One idea for improved retention is during highlights between strengths maybe break down a few plays to show how these things translate to nba play for casual fans, and also during weaknesses maybe explain what they should have done during the play and how they can improve.
this is a great report, thank you!
Pistons fan here so I love your videos for prospect evaluation keep up the great work! Please do aussar next
Best basketball scouting channel on YT and its not even close
Good scouting report. I see Amen as a mix of a young athletic Derrick Rose mixed with the shifty unorthodox game of Manu Ginobili with his creative high velocity passes and unusual footwork and finishes.
I got a feeling he’s going to go crazy in the Summer League
Great break down. His feel for the game is great. Hopefully Mike Miller can get his shot together.
Mike Miller has always been a great shooter
I just wish the twins did waste their time the past couple of years with OTE. Not sure playing super AAU for the past two years really grew their game all that much
They was training with NBA players playing against much better comp than anyone in highschool while also getting in NBA workouts and still getting nba looks. Ausar the perfect example his whole game is better from his first year. Amen got smarter
Nah both of them *NEEDED* to rebuild their jumpshots so better to do that sooner than later and get the support, coaching and skills development they got. They are both much further ahead of where they would have been had they gone to Duke or Kansas and still had broken mechanics
I think it just depends on the player and what they need. If you need reps (think Embiid) or need to understand defensive fundamentals (Tatum, Paolo) or just need to mature then I think college is perfect. If you need significant skills development then OTE is probably the best spot because it's not about winning games; just developing. And if you are a hyper athlete then Ignite makes sense because you can learn the game and get skills development in an environment more conducive to your skills and closer to what you'll see in the NBA.
@@mittendemon4493if that’s the case then why is amen still a horrendous shooter? He’s going to come into the league almost 21 with the expectation to be a lead ball handler and shoots 29 percent from 3 and 50 percent from the free throw line. If playing and training with NBA talent was the goal, they could’ve joined the G league ignite team.
@@itisnottaken4444 Yeah, don't want to be a Hater but his shooting is terrible at best he is a "Project" and your not picking him top 5 if that is the case. He is playing against a bunch of High School players he should be dominating them and he is not and you know teams are not going to guard him outside the paint they going to dare him to shoot the result will not be good.
@@Kenny-bj2zq like even the names commonly mentioned (Westbrook Rose Ja Wall) were all respectable shooters from the free throw and mid range while Amen is atrocious at both. If he miraculously fixes the form and become decent in from the free throw and I’d range, it would justify picking him so high. Hope he shows up to the combine
Amen and Ausar are the best vertical athletes I have seen
Shaedon Sharpe FR
@@spencertrepagnels8780sharpe def jumps higher but they’re more twitchy
Rockets Fans...its ok, This Guy is a STUD
I cannot wait to see the twins with high skill level, smart players on THEIR team with them for em to work with. The passes, the drives, it’s gonna be something
6:39 the block 😂😂😂
He’s got that Ben Simmons archetype: plus sized gaurd with ball skills, great athlete, fantastic passing vision, & zero jumper. If he has a better work ethic, the upside is maybe even beyond prospect Ben Simmons.
ben simmons is 6'11 and a way better defender tho but i see ur point
@@Bateo16 At the draft combine Simmons measured 6'8.25" without shoes. NBA players always seem to magically grow like 2-3 inches after they get drafted lol. Maybe they're still growing when they're like 20 or maybe NBA teams are just trying to polish up that trade value just in case.
@@aerob1033that was an unofficial measurement and if you look at him now, he’s legitimately 6”10-6”11.
Nah bruh you draggin it. Ben was a top tier passer and had safe tight ball handling they not doing this in the league
My favorite prospects in a long time. They probably have the most upside
ya that 25% from 3 is so good
I saw that game vs Creighton alum in the TBT last summer. Amen was the best player on the floor. That dunk was on the first play of the game and then boys was shook. They was fouling the hell out of the twins and got all the calls but the twins stayed composed.
He’s better than Brandon Miller imo
Nah bro
its close, same problem with both - beat up on inferior comp. Miller splits vs poor teams/good teams are atrocious
His player comp reminds me of kuminga
Hot take here but I’d rather have aussar than amen. Aussar is a better defender and shooter while still being a good slasher and playmaker. These I think give him a much better chance of hitting his ceiling than his brother
Not a better passer though and that’s what rockets need.
Rockets fan here checking in, hes not to bad!
Hes mid but gets some highlights
Hes basically a taller russ with defense. He will need to rework his shot and that will take time. Also the Rockets will have to rebuild their roster around him and get a center who can be respectable from 3 or if Alpi can increase his 3pt% , spacing issues.
Welcome to Houston Amen!!
Cross & finish @2:40 😮😳😳 sheesh
Future All star trust!
#1 is ready for you in Houston.. Jabari back to #10
Jordan hawkins report next??
Just once in my lifetime i want to see twins start on the same team.
Welcome to Houston bro
Amen has a higher ceiling than Brandon Miller imo. Amen's game is more versatile, & believe because of his athleticism could be better defender over time.
Hot take Asuar is better right now
Raptors NEED to trade for the 4th pick if they can’t trade for the 3rd… either scoot or amen for the raptors future pg with Scottie would be SPECIAL‼️‼️‼️
😅😅😅😅😅😊
Amen and Ausar needa workout with PG this off season it’ll greatly improve their rookie season
favorite comp imo is oenny hardaway
that's exactly what i thought when i watch his highlight
Welcome to Houston
Does anyone know how good this league is? I want to analyze his game, but I wonder if the competition is any good?
The competition in this league is pretty bad honestly. It’s like top tier AAU basketball.
@@Daniel-rc2bu Thank you!
the dribbling is much more of an issue than I thought. The ball's been like butter in his hands way too often with the Rockets
What I wanna see if if there were any real bigs in ote while he was doing all this
Highlight reels against the YMCA? Does that justify top 5?
Do any of you people think that if amen & ausur do well their first couple season that it opens the door for OTE? Or no?
if they do it certainly will, but at the same time OTE needs to up their standard of basketball in general regardless if the Twins are a success in the league.
I do. It already has just by them playing for the OTE.
N I see ppl saying comp they played in that tbt as well 👀💯
25% from 3 and 65% from the line. That should scare away potential teams from drafting him high.
Happens every year some Uber athletic guys go over guys that make shots. Back when Booker was drafted I was saying please take Booker tons of guys ahead of him all athletic got drafted all out of the league that Booker still making buckets everyday.
There are truths in what y’all are saying, but y’all are crazy if you think all he is is just athleticism. You have to give credit to his incredible playmaking and ability to drive. I think he will be a plus defender as well. Definitely needs to improve his shooting though.
@@michaelotegbola8190 none of that matters if he can’t shoot, especially if he’s gonna be the primary ball handler, look at ben simmons for example.
@@judoka. I think it all matters. It’s all important/beneficial. Do you think a player that can only shoot but has no playmaking ability, no athleticism, no defense, no drive is going to be drafted as high as Amen Thompson is about to? There will be busts in the league who are not great shooters and busts who are great shooters. Lebron couldn’t shoot coming in. Iggy couldn’t shoot. Stackhouse, Jason Kidd, Grant Hill. I can go on and on. And then you have top draft picks that could shoot like Trajan Langdon or Dejuan Wagner, Jimmer Fredette…
@@michaelotegbola8190 when did i say that? now you’re grasping at straws. i said none of that matters if he’s gonna be the *primary ball handler.*
if he’s going to run the offense but he can’t shoot, then it’ll be easier to gameplan against him and he’ll be a liability in the playoffs, LIKE BEN SIMMONS.
im not saying he’ll never learn how to shoot, but with his broken mechanics, if he doesn’t learn how to shoot sooner than later, it’ll be a problem.
I want him in Orlando with banchero and Wagner
Michael Carter Williams as a comp ?
Hard to believe that the Thompson twins aren't consensus 2 and 3. They have all the tools except outside shooting. Maybe people have too much recent buyer remorse with Ben Simmons. Still you can't underestimate the importance of getting to the basket and versatility on defense. Not to mention sharing the ball.
Come on Orlando!!!!
I have a feeling he’s going to be more a wing than a true guard in the NBA
That's my fear. If he can't be a lead guard then idk if he'll be able to reach all-star level production with his poor shooting. He's one of the riskier picks in the lottery imo
@@claudioclini5380 well I don’t even think him being a wing is a bad thing. He can still be highly impactful and elite without being a Guard.
@@ethermac9015 Maybe, but I think wings who don't shoot well or defend at an elite level will have a tough time being elite. His best strengths are explosion and defense collapsing. As an off-ball wing I think those strengths wouldn't be maximized
@@claudioclini5380 I think his defense can be elite. He can be a elite point forward possibly. Like Ben Simmons before he lost all his confidence
I see him as a point guard. He needs to tighten up his handle, but I think that will come. His passing/playmaking/court vision is already there.
As a pistons fans I’ve been ODIng on Viktor and Scoot highlights. Time to catch up on the twins and Miller from Bama. The top 5. Pistons will pick top 5 regardless
I wonder how any team that drafts him can be certain that they haven't got his brother. Man, they sure look alike.
Houston fans all over this video after the lottery.
I've been waiting for these twins to get drafted they finna terrorize the league
44 inch vert next to Jalen Green
If the three ball comes around the league will have to be on notice. Also 1st hour gang
Nick Smith Jr next!
I see a little bit of Ben Simmons with less defensive impact
I'm here after the lottery draft
Uploaded 16 seconds ago! I'm probably first lol!
Nah im first srry i luv u though
@@FriendlyTroll5 All good, bro ha ha
Looks like he just needs pro coaching on his shot form, hopefully such that he can keep the overall structure but just tune it up so he can hit more consistently
Yea whoever is the assistant got to work on his shot but he can play in the open floor. Ideally he should be a PG to maximize his talents but idk how his playmaking skills will translate. He has wing size but his defense will dictate his position. Look for Ime to use him as a backup at the point or a combo wing at the 2 or 3 to start out. Keeping his turnovers low will be key 🔑 for consistent minutes.
Jalen Green and Amen Thompson will hands down be the most athletic back court in the league.
Add Cam Whitmore now and the Rockets might be the most athletic team in general lol
Today's NBA you got to be able to shoot the ball, if you can not shoot then it will be hard for you to get on the floor. All I saw was dunks...so is this Jalen Green with no Jumper ?
even Jalen Greens rookie year his shooting was so abysmal he had to rework his shooting fundamentals which took a whole season to get consistent with and it was even spotty his sophomore year. I don't even wanna imagine how long its going to take for Asur to be respectable from range.
@coachswag8956 but he still was a shooter this guy shot mechanics don't look right
@@goatedoldhead_2040 thats what im saying, if someone who was considered a great shooter coming into the leagu needed 2 years to get accustomed to a good jumpshot i don't think Amens will be respectable until his rookie contract is up.
How do you view him on the Rockets like who will he be?
So many leapers on the HOU roster.
Houston should get him don’t trade pick
Michael carter Williams
What about SGA as a comp? He's 6'6, athletic, a solid playmaker, and a quick defender. He can score in the paint but is just an okay outside shooter.
Plays nothing like shai amen Thompson is a more athletic Ben Simmons
Ben simmons seems a lot bigger player then amen. Simmons was a great playmaker in the L to start and a great point forward. Idk if that fits amen. I wonder if ime will let him run the team as a backup at least initially to see how his game translate. A slightly bigger john wall comes to mind better.
For every bit that this athleticism is supreme next level...that shot is equal parts ugly. In a world where we're increasingly seeing 40+ 3's attempted per game....i just don't know. Hopefully for his sake he's a killer at heart and works his ass off on it because everything else about him is special special.
This years Jaden Ivey
Rockets got a great one !
Why duke dennis a ote announcer😭
I like Amen Thompson over Brandon Miller
He needs to learn how to shoot to fulfill his potential
He looks like a good prospect. The fit in Houston I'm not sure about. I wanted Paolo. So maybe we'll trade 4.
He’ll fit like a glove in Houston, he’s the missing piece we need. A point guard
He’s still pretty raw. At least three years away from being a legit starter
At least? You are smoking crack and or overhating
If he's going to be used like a 6'7 Westbrook in a terrible team he's a starter day one
@@rafaelsantana4905 of course he’s gonna be a starter day one. But I mean a legit starter, one that will contribute to winning
He has a mix of Julius Randle and Ben Simmons
Potential to b the next penny j get that j a lil right which it will he gonna have nba training day in day out off seasons all that everybody sleeping on him 👀
Amen lowkey looks like okc harden
if hornets take scoot i hope he would end up on the blazers
still fringe if they cant shoot
Orlando Magic need to scoop him up
Iggy or Jaylen Brown
I see baby Shai
He misses jumpers when his feet are set wider compared to his makes
That can be corrected. With the right coaching will become a fine nba player and maybe a great one in 3 yrs we will known.
A raw Penny Hardaway
Ben Simmons 2.0 if he can’t develop a 3pter. Tall with dribbles, athletic, great vision with no shot. Hope he developes a jump shot.
Didn't ben simmons start from day one???? I wonder if Ime will give him the keys to run the point from day one similarly.
Could he play PG?
He is a PG
Shooting form the same Lamelo ball
Kevin porter, Jalen green,Amen ,Jabari, Sengu. That’s lowkey aite
Slide amen to pg and put in tari eason for me personally kpj can be a great six man
Spurssssss
His shooting percentages are very concerning, also gotta factor the age/talent level of the ‘guys’ he was facing. They’re all young kids haha
I guess we will see how he fairs for us…. But knowing how the league is we won’t even get him… let’s go rockets I guess
6'7 Ja Morant? Don't worry about the shooting, Spurs just hired a new pretty good shooting coach. Wemby still #1 priority tho 🙏🏽
Can he shoot???
Did you watch the video ?
Lmao OTE looks like the all-star game. There's no way they got these twins in the lottery playing against this type of competition. I just don't get it🤣
Kind of an Exum vibe for me, but a good org can def get something out of this kid. Just not a believer in that ceiling. He needs Spurs bad.
Ain’t no way this dude gone be there at 4. Nobody on the court moves like him.
Coming to Houston 🔥
@@PGuillory I wish but he's 6'7 and a freak athlete. teams can teach shooting. they cant teach a guard to be 6'7 and athletic. he's probably gone bro
@SoldierOfJah only reason I can see him gone at 4 is because Charlotte or Portland don't need a pg, but that's still leaving houston with scoot at 4, so if this guy isn't there then we gone get either scoot or miller
These OTE commentators man lol
Please drop to 5 pleas!!
