A Kiwi's Standard Bearer: The Story of Bruce McLaren

  • In the late 1950s, packing up and moving from New Zealand to come to England must have been a massive undertaking. Multiple stops, loud and uncomfortable aircraft. It must have taken forever and we think it takes forever now
    But there seems to be something in the water down there. New Zealand seems to produce a lot of great drivers. And it all started with a man from Auckland who started one of the longest running F1 teams, and became the one that a lot of other Kiwis follow.

    Goes without saying, Bruce did NOT write the lyrics to Pump up the Jam.
    Although he DID write the first draft of what became Man! I Feel Like a Woman. It was originally titled "Man! I Feel Like a Sandwich"

    In showing my age, I lived through the entire era of McLaren when he was a driver, where it was a most depressing day when finding out of his death in 1970.
    This presentation gave a nice overview without going into too much detail, which is something I prefer.
    Sometimes when a presenter offers too much in the way of details, and a blatant error is made, it can sour the presentation experience when viewing.
    So, this was nicely done!

      SVG is the first driver in sixty years to win a NASCAR cup race on his first start (Johnny Rutherford, Daytona 1963). He's also the first road course "ringer" to win in fifty years (Mark Donohue, Riverside 1973). Also, the first Kiwi to win a Cup race

  • @jimiverson3085
    @jimiverson3085 Před rokem +7

    I recall reading a story about Le Mans in 1967 that involved McLaren. He and Mark Donohue were paired in a Ford Mk IV, and as you would expect of two of the best development drivers of the era, quickly came to grips with the setup on their car. While that was happening, Foyt and Gurney were embroiled in a dispute on setting up their car and its handling got steadily worse as testing sessions went along. After the last practice session, the Shelby American engineers quietly transferred the McLaren/Donohue suspension setup to the Gurney/Foyt car, not mentioning that to Gurney or Foyt. As they say, the rest is history.

    Hello Aidan: I want to add to what you said about the difficulties of flying between NZ/Australia and Europe. Up until the advent of the 747 in 1970, long distance plane travel was so hideously expensive, it was beyond the reach of ordinary people. When the band, the original Seekers went from Australia to London in the 1960's they went by ship. Also, The Easybeats went to London by ship. A key member of The Easybeats was George Young, elder bother of Angus Young of AC/DC. Keep up the good work.

    Funny you mentioned Shane Van Gisbergen at the end. This past weekend (2 July 2023), in his very first NASCAR Cup Series start ... The Gis (pronounced Giz) as he is known in his native New Zealand and Australia, won the Chicago Street Race. The win makes him the first New Zealander to win a NASCAR Cup Series race.
    Van Gisbergen has built up quite a resume and he's only 34.
    New Zealand Formula Ford Champion in 2005-06
    (V8) Supercars Champion in 2016, 2021 and 2022
    Bathurst 1000 winner in 2020 and 2022
    Bathurst 12 Hour winner in 2016

    And the amazing part is that McLaren was only 32 when he was killed. I wonder if the team would have had its post-M23 doldrums if he had lived.
    I always thought of the McLaren color as Gulf Orange. Gulf Oil was a picked up as a team sponsor in 1967 and McLaren adopted the orange color then. Bruce was always keen on maintaining the team finances. During the Gold Leaf era, Lotus had "Racing for Britain" painted on the team transports. McLaren joked that he was thinking about painting "Racing for Money" on the McLaren transports.

    An interesting bit of trivia tying Bruce to Shane van Gisbergen.....A man by the name of Jim Stone was working for McLaren and was one of the first on the scene of Bruce's fatal accident. Years later Jim and his brother Ross formed Stone Brothers Racing competing in V8 Supercars. After winning championships with Marcos Ambrose and Russell Ingall, they signed a promising young driver by the name of Shane van Gisbergen. Shane collected his first win in Supercars with Stone Brothers and was with them up until they announced they would be selling the team.

    Technically a 747 can do london to Sydney, but on max fuel and bare minimum weight, it had been done around 20 years ago.
    Now until 2025, you can go non-stop London to Perth which is around 17hrs long

  • @AntoniusTyas
    @AntoniusTyas Před rokem

    About 747: Quad jets can actually do nonstop, but even with A380 Qantas still do stopover at Changi for Heathrow-Sydney flight. I know this because the ill-fated Qantas flight 32 took off from Changi before its engine blew up above Batam, forcing them to return to Changi.
    Also for the purpose of the long-distance JFK-SIN flight from Singapore Airlines, they need to use a special version of Airbus A350 called A350-900ULR where they expanded the fuel tank capacity by 24 tonnes, whilst also reducing the passenger capacity to 250pax for 2-class setups or 170pax for largely-business-class setups, instead of usual 317 seats. I saw one during my visit to Singapore for the 2022 race week. It looks amazing.
