    FYI, I recorded this video 2 weeks before my last one lol. While editing this video I realized how STUPID alot of these reasons were for upgrading cameras so I changed the title to that lol, us as creators ALWAYS create a problem for ourselves. Moral of this all is....... just make stuff lol. It's RARE that a new camera will make the process easier, it usually complicates it even more

      Gear envy is real. I try not to upgrade or buy anything I really don't need. I've definitely bought some gear that I really don't use like my slider. I do want to get better at it so I can use it more.

      You hit the truth in sooo many levels. I know for me, I wanted to insure some of my equipment and realized how much I have spent and never even got my money’s worth..specially DJI! Drones!-Phantoms, a spark, my osmo, dslr gimbal, and and and...heard it so many times and didn’t listen...create with what you have. What I’m doing now, if it isn’t necessary to bring in money immediately or I ABSOLUTELY NEED it immediately....I will not buy it anymore. Unless it’s a crazy deal I can’t pass up and will compliment what I already have or really fill a need I have. This has saved me some money and time. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR VIDS!! yo always add value!!!

    I say treat the camera like a paintbrush and paint. When you feel you want to add more colors and different brushes make your change. If the change won't help you change the painting don't upgrade. I love my GH5 !! I have been waiting for the GH6 though! I am completely content with this camera!!

  • @justinbuice
    @justinbuice Před 2 lety +2

    I started with a T2i and got a 70D which was a huge upgrade, adding continuous video autofocus and a flip screen. I convinced myself that I needed to shoot my CZcams videos in 4k so I sold all of my Canon gear and got a Sony a6500 and a few lenses.
    While the video was higher resolution, the a6500 presented a new set if problems. No fully articulating screen meant I needed an external monitor, it burned through batteries way faster than my 70D, the colors straight out of camera weren’t that great, and it would occasionally overheat. Those issues were compounded by the fact that I still didn’t have my lighting and audio sorted out at that point. I ended up selling all the Sony stuff and getting the EOS-R, a good light and a better mic, and that has been my CZcams setup for the past two years.
    I catch myself watching camera reviews all the time or browsing B&H, but I have to ask myself, would a new camera really make a difference that the end viewer would appreciate (EOS R5/ R6)? Or would the money be better invested elsewhere on my channel.

    My most impulsive purchase was the BMPCC 4k. I own a Gh5 and Gh5s with speed-booster, so there’s heavy investment in both Canon EF glass and M4/3 native lenses. All of the advantages of the BM fly right out the door if you don’t edit on Davinci. The rig-out is cumbersome, the now infamous power problem, the awkward shape. All of this required solutions and workarounds. Great image quality, but it did not fit into my workflow like I hoped.

    True-to-life video. I'm a Canon shooter at heart. I own a 5D MKiii and 5D MKii (used mainly for stills). I sold my Sony A7ii last year, which I bought for video. I wasn't happy with the color space, battery life and lack of reliable autofocus when vlogging. I bought a GH5 in December 2019 for corporate videos, interviews, b-roll, etc. I'm loving it. I own a lot of gear, but I need to get cracking on producing the video content I love.

I'm so new to the video thing and all I can think about is upgrading my Fujifilm X-T2 (your A7III offer isn't helping) but I am still waiting to reach a full overhaul. I want to wait until it's been fully reviewed but I feel like the X-T4 will really feel like a full upgrade with IBIS, good AF, and 10-bit video but I want to sit on the idea more until my skills make an upgrade more necessary. Thanks for the honest videos as always

  • @andrewdoeshair
    @andrewdoeshair Před 4 lety

    My dumbest upgrade was from a Canon T5 to a Canon 5Diii, simply because I was so new I thought a better camera would take better pictures. It didn't. Years later when I finally was good enough to utilize the 5Diii closer to it's full potential I "upgraded" to a Canon SL2, because (as you pointed out, which I love that you pointed out) I needed a camera that was better for a youtube workflow, not necessarily better specs on paper-- flippy screen, wifi, and all that. After living between the 5Diii for photos and the SL2 for videos, I ended up selling both and getting an EOS RP and an EOS R. Haven't looked back. I'm not even excited about the R5, I plan to hang on to these until whatever generation comes after R5. PS: this video was amazingly refreshing. Instantly subscribed! Also, on behalf of barbers and stylists everywhere, we miss you guys and can't wait to cut your hair again!

  • @HermanThind
    @HermanThind Před 4 lety +1

    Love your no-BS approach: try something for a while and judge it AFTER the honeymoon stage. Best advice most CZcams reviewers don’t follow. Thank you for that.
    My worst ‘upgrade’ had to be grabbing a Lumix G85 to be a main camera to my 70D. I’d been shooting with a 5Dii and the 70D up to that point, and decided the g85 was a great price for a weather resistant 4K camera. Didn’t even consider how horrible the autofocus was, or how off the colours were to Canon colours. I took the g85 with me for family outings, because it was small, but I barely used it for some b-roll.
    I ended up being the first person at my local camera store grabbing an EOS-R, and haven’t looked back.
    I ended up selling my G85 to a content creator, and a few months later selling my 70D to a film student and grabbing an M50 to complement my EOS R and 5Dii (which I still use for photos).
    I get to use a C100 and C200 at work, and my R footage is a perfect match for the Cinema cameras. And I get the floppy screen, and use all my Canon lenses.
    I will, however, be laying down a deposit for the R5... because... you know...
    Love your vlog!

    • @nvusxo
      @nvusxo Před 4 lety +1

      Eddie J I love the 80D. But honestly I’m thinking ima do the 90D because of the improvement in low light 💡 as well as the 4K etc. ( over all image quality ) there’s no going wrong with their auto focus. You’d know because of the 80D. I think from there I’m cool with that probably won’t even sell the 80D just use it as a second camera. Cameras can’t create lighting scenarios so the best advice for anyone who may read this is lighting is the most important factor other than the camera and creativity.

    • @TMartins379
      @TMartins379 Před 4 lety

      Nope, keep that 80D. For video, the only thing that might be worth your upgrade is the upcoming R5. Used to have the 80d and I upgraded to EOS R. Great camera but I still didn’t feel like it was much of an upgrade. 80D is such a great camera for its price point.

    I spent the last 3-4 years renting the Sony a6500 for music video work and just a few months ago I finally pulled the trigger and purchased the Fujifilm X-T3. It was the first camera purchase I've made since the Sony a6000 in 2014. I had previously tried out the camera but didn't like the fuji lenses and returned it. I wanted to give it another try because the sensor specs are amazing and I've seen some beautiful videos captured on it. I ended up getting the Fringer EF-FX Pro II and the difference in quality with canon lenses on the X-T3 is night & day. The autofocus is 2x smoother, and I feel like the 10 bit colors and dynamic range really shine now. Super happy with this camera purchase, I feel like I'll be sticking with the Fuji for quite a while until I'm ready for a full fledged cinema camera. I feel like it's the best mix of pro cinema quality and ease of use on set.

    Used to vlog so very much miss auto focus but the IBIS and 4K 60 FPS changed my life with gh5... and even doing 1080 @ 120 FPS was siiickkk 🙏

    So cool that you started by just carrying the rebel around and taking pics of everything...that's how it's done. ( not so cool how you came into the 7D - big ups for admitting it though), but outstanding use of two cameras to make your vids.
    Glad to see the WINS column growing for you.

    I went from the G85 to the Canon C200. Pretty big jump, and after owning the C200 for about a year I'm thinking about switching to a hybrid IBIS camera again.
    Really miss the IBIS and I noticed I love making pictures a lot. I found out being flexible in shooting video and photos is pretty valuable to me. Just not sure what camera to switch back to. Would love to go Full Frame now and the Canon colors + auto focus are dope. Perhaps the EOS R would be the right choice for me.

  • @dwaynegraham5213
    @dwaynegraham5213 Před 4 lety

    the funny thing is I am a lot like you when it comes to buying cameras......I LOVE GEAR. Started with a t2i then got a 60d, then got a C100, then I got a Sony FS5, sold the FS5, and got a C200. My 60d got stolen, I sold the C100 and my boy destroyed my T2i. Through all of this the one thing I learned is that...….I DONT NEED ALL THAT NONSENSE! When you go on shoots, regardless if its corporate or music videos or small business commercials, you need a camera that fits who you are as a creative. The true journey is finding out what works best for you and what helps you to put out your best work and I think having two cameras (having a main like a C200 or a FS7 or FX9 and a B camera, like a GH5 or EOS R for gimbal/vlogging) makes your life a little easier so if you don't need a big setup, you don't use one. I'm sorry for being long winded but I get glossy eyed when I have seen every camera, but now I look for things that make my life easier as a creator. YC I think you said it perfect in one of your last post when you said don't pay attention to what others are doing and spend time trying to find out who you are. Love the content and stay safe. Bless

    Dug on your in depth dive. I relate, GH5 is a bangin camera and I figure I'll get 2-3 more years out of my lineup. My feeling is this: use your camera system until you literally cannot achieve out of it what you're trying to do. Like, if you've surpassed the best of its capabilites as a creator, then it's time to upgrade.

    Luckily all of my upgrades have been completely worth it at this time. My biggest fight right now is decided to get an EOS R or not. I have the 5d Mk Iv right now. I shoot just about everything when it comes to photos. My biggest source of income would be wedding videos that I shoot with the 5d mk iv. Thought the EOS R might be a good addition to that as a second camera when I need a second shooter or don't want to be switching lenses from a wide to a telephoto...

Yes the body looks so small, but buy a small rig cage, V-mount battery, a professional mattebox which can take filters, buy a monitor : your Sony will look like Red. Buy Sigma 16mm 1.4, 30mm 1.4 and 56mm 1. 4 you will enjoy the camera the most and don't for getting lights and reflectors.
