This is excellent. The piece about the back bolt on the housing is great. The quarter inch drive 10 mm deep well socket with the short extension is tremendously helpful.
Good content. If you can work on your own car, you can easily save thousands of dollars over its lifespan. An aging hybrid should give you plenty of material for more youtube videos! The narration was excellent.
For one who hates working on cars, you do a nice job, particularly one-handed with the camera. The excellent camera work and narration really helps me prepare for this "fun" job!

@@troylollysaf9311 I think so, it’s been quite a while since I changed the thermostat. I think I just filled it with antifreeze till it was full, squeezed the radiator hose, then re-filled it. Drove it for about 30 minutes and re-filled it again
I have 2012 prius with heater issues, early cold morning i gotta shut down engine on and off few nd play with heater few minutes for heater to kick in.
Hey, if it's hard to get the clamp loose to remove the hose close to the thermostat housing, maybe you can try to remove the clamp on the other end of the hose. I saw on Ebay, an used whole thermostat unit with 3 hose connected to it. So apparently, somebody remove them the other way around.
How would you know.? No temp gauge. But on long trip and going up hills, I use my wired scanner because it has the ability to read coolant temp. Gets to about 197 on big hills like Cajon Pass on the way to Vegas from San Diego. Will back off on MPH if temp goes over 200. My 2012 Prius is known to blow head gaskets. I will change the electric water pump at 100k (81k now) to avoid the dreaded water pump failure due to plastic parts that degrade with heat cycles.
HELP, please. Problem is sporadic random overheating, accompanied with coolant liquid blown out tru the release valve on the plastic overflow container. I installed new thermostat (ebay), new water pump (the old one looks ok, and the rotor does not appear to be damaged) pressure test was good, keeps 12 psi for long time, exhaust fumes in coolant is negative, I pumped many many many times, the liquid remains blue... Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Shaver Dave Yes. It is a Hybrid. My thermostat wasn’t letting the engine warm up to operating temperature. It was for mechanical purposes, not the heater in the car. Although I have the same issue as you do with my heater.
Jay Johnson thanks I will need to change mine before winter for sure , will also check with ob2 and see if any code comes up . Other than one for the fuel canister .
Hi why did you change it, my car had engine heat blink once on motorway coolant is still there I did 100 mile after that what should I do change the thermostat
ullah552 Hey Ullah552, Thanks for the question. The metal spring on the thermostat looses its elasticity after being heated and cooled too many times. It causes the plug on the thermostat to get stuck in whatever position it happens to be in. If it’s midway open, you may never notice. But if it’s stuck all the way open your car never heats up to operating temperature and will not pass a smog inspection. If it’s stuck in the closed position, your car will overheat causing numerous engine problems.
Same happens with me.... Engine heat blink light appears on highway afterwards I slow down my speed.... So it's the issue of thermostat or radiator needs service? 🤔
Probably should burp the system after doing this. Run it in maintenance mode in park with the coolant tank open, until you get a few fan cycles to run.
Yes, as soon as the inadequately designed electric water pump fails, you can't pull over fast enough to avoid overheating. And you won't have a clue what's wrong without a bluetooth scanner. Buy one off Amazon and get Dr. Prius for your phone.
Keep Driving! If you are paranoid, buy a new water pump for less than $50 and put it in then trunk if you take a long trip. Any mechanic can change a mechanical pump.
@@jayjohnson4352 I know I have to take the plastic housing to remove it. If I take it off and remove the thermostat inside the plastic housing then put back the housing. Will it damage my 2012 prius?
The thermostat stops the flow of water so it can heat up. If you take it out, your heater won’t work and the car will never reach proper operating temperature

There’s a rubber o-ring that comes with the new thermostat housing. No gasket
Do you need to add any type of sealant to the o ring?

Does the thermostate actually remove from the housing or do you have to buy the complete plastic housing with thermostate
You purchase the whole plastic housing with the thermostat already in the assembly. They were selling for about $50.00 when I changed mine.

How to put in maintenance mode?
take out the thermostat from the housing. in my housing the thermostat was upside down. the little hole must be on top to bleed the air.

It’s probably something different. Water pump or dirty radiator
Watched this twice now to remove thermostat that is salting with coolant. Aim here to hopefully stop Prius vibrations aka misfires.
drain the coolant FIRST!!! do not let it all over the ground. it does not evaporate, and it is sticky and yaky and damages the paint.
