Nuclear weapon (together with biological and chemical weapons) is banned in war after all.
But nuclear-powered weapons as in aircraft carriers or submarine is completely legal.
And yes, war has rules. Why? Because war is always about resources and territory we can't afford a war with no benefit, scorched earth is an unacceptable strategy. Because it would make the land inhabitable.
This is also why belkan dropping 7 nuke on their own soil is unimaginable.

With Armored Core 4 and FA being seemingly more influenced by Gundam in comparison to other AC games, I think it is reasonable to assume that Kojima particles were inspired by Minovsky particles from Gundam. Those are described as high-energy particles that are created as a byproduct of running specially designed helium-3 fusion reactors.
Other possibility I was thinking about is that Kojima particles might be a type of plasma, given how similarly do Kojima weapons work to plasma weapons and that they are in some way related to polar auroras or atmospheric ionization/plasma phenomena in general.

The translucent green of the Kojima particles also brings to mind the GN particles of Gundam 00.
While the pure GN particles displayed in the anime did not possess any negative effects and even furthered human to evolved into Innovators, side materials and prequel stories showcased that the early versions of the pure GN particles were extremely toxic and were no different from the TAU GN particles.

Noice! This is a subject that's probably confounded a lot of us. Nuclear energy is the most intuitive inference. I hadn't thought about neutrinos; neutrinos would be very difficult to capture and use in weapons and armor. A new exotic super-heavy hadron might fit the bill - I don't know enough about nuclear physics to say whether you could derive energy from them. Whatever it is, it has to fill the roles of weapon, primal armor, and energy source. Fissile material could be used as a nuclear plasma and energy source; I don't know of any physics that allows you to suspend the particles around an object in such a way that it acts like armor. OH! Fissile material could also hypothetically be produced by a generator of sorts, if the rotating generator had some sort of centrifuge apparatus that constantly ejected fissile material. So, in-craft production is another requirement.
The following is really long. MS Word says it's about 1300 words total, enough to be a short college essay. I'm not really proofreading it, so forgive repetition, spelling, and grammer.
Going into some in-unverse development, actual Kojima facilities must have been huge. The only ones we see are BFF's sphere, Torus' B7, and a room with prototype Nexts that has a high Kojima particle density. Well, Omer and Akva Vit were the forerunners of Kojima research, while Torus is a relatively new conglomerate company, and BFF were never seen as Kojima pioneers. I'm guessing Omer had massive and highly advanced Kojima facilities for energy production, R&D, maybe even other purposes we don't even know about.
Oh sh-wait, Sphere...! Silent Avalanche. Mary Shelly. Oh man! Here's another Where WAS Sphere? In the mountains? The Arctic? Noo.. Remember that you fight Mary Shelly in Antarctica. I always thought it was random as hell that you just fight her at the world's bottom. That whole fight makes a lot more sense if Sphere and other BFF interests are located in the Antarctic. We know that Shanghai has flooded, so global warming SWEPT throught he world. Antarctica is much warmer in the AC universe than it is in our own - it's safer and easier to build a large scale facility. Assuming Sphere's in the Antarctic, there's another point to be made. What happens when you fight Mary Shelly? AP depletion due to the ridiculous concentration of Kojima particles in the air. What happens any time you fight around Sphere? Not that.
Based on the above, here's my recharacterization of BFF's Kojima involvement, Sphere's unstated (possibly primary) purpose, and the reason Omer was so eager to take control of the facility. BFF's research into Kojima wasn't primarily focused on harnessing it for productive purposes. They were dumping resources into protection from Kojima and ultimately eliminating it. Their most prominent developments were the Sphere facility and the specialized Normals that could operate in environments with lethal Kojima particle concentrations.Given that the Antarctic had a high Kojima particle concentration, but the area around Sphere had concentrations low enough to operate in, I'm guessing Sphere had mechanisms to draw Kojima particles out of the atmosphere (maybe from the ice?) and use it up. I think it's possible that energy generation was a secondary effect of Sphere; its primary purpose might have been Kojima particle elimination.
That Kojima elimination technology might have been the reason Omer was so eager to take control of Sphere. Omer was the most reckless corporation with regards to Kojima production - think of how much pollution Answerer-type Arms Forts caused. Couple that with their absorption of Rayleonard's assets - probably many contaminated facilities, and Omer could have been dealing with overall contamination an order of magnitude more than any other corporation. They needed a solution, but BFF wasn't sharing their tech.
BFF's top brass, in contrast with Omer, were probably the most afraid of the health effects of Kojima contamination, hence why they all lived and worked ON A FRIGGEN SHIP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN! And in For Answer, what happens? Oh, half of the human population has to flee Kojima contamination and live in the sky. And for those who had to stay on the ground, where was Line Ark? In a huge body of water. BFF was ahead of their time in terms of tackling the Kojima problem. The entire Cradle development might have been based on the measures BFF took to protect its employees from Kojima particles. BFF might still hold a technological advantage in Kojima protection technologies and practices - the fleets you fight and wipe out are so massive BFF might have the largest surface-based population in AC For Answer.
Consider also other corporations' attitudes toward Kojima particles. The GAE split was partly because GAE was engaging in Kojima research, which GA had forbidden; this is according to the wiki, and by Internal Purge's debriefing calling GAE "the heretical zealots of GA." So Global Armaments was against Kojima research in general (exception: there's a single Cougar-made Assault Armor Over Booster). Rayleonard and Akva Vit barrelled forward with Kojima research, often poisoning their pilots (Tepes V) in the process. Eqbal/Algebra and Technocrat didn't have any special Kojima research aside from Nexts, that I know. Torus made Kojima weapons and Kojima missiles, which is interesting since Torus didn't really specialize in missile tech, but they decided to dump resources into a Kojima missile, even though the missile experts at MSAC never made one. Arisawa Heavy - no Kojima. Interior had those nasty Kojima Arms Forts in Ac4. Aldra - doesn't seem like any Kojima research. Ultimately, aside from Nexts, the world was divided in terms of further Kojima development, with BFF on one end combating Kojima spread, and Omer/Rayleonard and Akva Vit/Torus purposely focusing on weaponizing it.
Kojima tech is an extension of other 'wonder' technologies of the past. As we can see in-game, fossil fuels have caused large parts of the world to flood. I have no idea what the geography of AC4 /4A even looks like, but we can be assured total land mass is greatly reduced due to melting glaciers. The damage from nuclear weapons is conspicuously absent, which is worth asking why. I can't think of any firm answers. In the real world, lead was seen to be a wonder material, added to gasoline, made into silverware and dinner trays. But lead poisoning was known to be a thing going as far back as the Roman empire. It was incredibly reckless to use it and probably all people born before the year 2000 has some form of lead poisoning (nice little graph here: ourworldindata.org/leaded-gasoline-phase-out), which includes most of us watching these videos. Kojima tech is another 'wonder technology', enabling the construction of massive Arms Forts, Line Ark that eclipses the pre-Kojima buildings surrounding it, the Cradles which float perpetually in the upper atmosphere, the settling of Antarctica, and I'm sure many more things that we never see in-game. But the health effects are worse than any other wonder technology. Where fossil fuels caused much of the world to flood and lead caused survivable global poisoning, Kojima tech arguably made the entire land surface uninhabitable. And Kojima poising was much faster acting than radiation or lead - in the Orca ending, there's mention of helpless mothers with their feebly coughing babies. Environmentally, do we see a single instance of animal life anywhere in the AC4 universe? Well, wait. I think the only instances of wildlife in the whole franchise are a raven in AC3's opening, and a raven and bug in AC: Last Raven's opening. So scratch that idea. But aside from green Anatolia (which used a map originally featured in Chromehounds), I can't think of a single other tree, or bush, or grass in any AC4 mission. That's how BAD Kojima particles are. Even in AC5/Verdict Day I don't remember any signs of natural life, only rocky crags, endless dirt and desert, and massive man-made structures. Wow. I think Kojima killed everything.

OH that ethnic cleansing wars are something that really intrigue me. Just one little phrase, but it implies so much! I imagine so much went on during these wars you could make an entire game out of it, though a video game about ethnic cleansing/genocide would probably be horrific even by Armored Core's standards. I wonder how successful the genocide(s) was/were and which ethnicities were cleansed? There's the MLF that fights for white Africa; they have a defensive fortress - were they on the offense or defense? So many questions. Blacks were probably cleansed, just based on the fact Asian countries kind of hate Blacks, and Black African countries have basically zero industry. IIRC there's only a single black-founded automotive manufacturer in the whole continent. No idea about Indians (South Africa) or Afrikaners, or sub-Saharan Africa in general, really. If Barbaroi is a Berber, then the MLF might only be North African. Looked up images of Berbers. Stumbled on the the fact there's a subreddit called r/humanporn, which doesn't seem pornographic: www.reddit.com/r/HumanPorn/comments/sdkg4b/berber_girl_from_morocco/ . Didn't realize they were so light-skinned there.
With former Chinese Shanghai, we can infer some things. First, since nations were dismantled in the National Dismantlement War, China is no longer an entity. I think China is controlled by Eqbal/Algebra. As for the flooding, that's present in many places - Line Ark also comes to mind with its submerged skyscrapers. The world clearly flooded, probably due to melting ice caps. Something to think about: those Normals stationed on the buildings probably only fell a few meters if you destroyed the buildings from under them, but with humans being 'expendable', I doubt they were ever recovered. They probably survived the fall, so unless they could eject and swim to the surface, they died terrible deaths. Even stationing those shielded, highly defensive Normals on such fragile buildings was so reckless, and so brutal.

If they are artificial particles my theory is they could be magnetic monopoles.
Magnetic monopoles are Hypothetical quasi particles they are a kind of “higgs field knots” that exhibit having only one magnetic pole either only north or only south magnetic pole. Hence monopole
They are believed to only be produced during the early high energy universe and the energies needed is greater than our current large hadron colliders to produce one
If they exist they would appear as a kind of larger than normal particle with only north or only south Magnetic fields lines. Its not exactly clear if they could be used in some way
but some potential exists for say propulsion by containing a lot of monopole in a magnetic chamber then pushing them out as a propellant. Like a kind of compressed air propellant but in this case your pushing out compressed clusters of magnetic monopoles. They should atleast repell each other.
Their bizarre nature makes them a perfect candidate for kojima particles in my opinion, since maybe all kojima particles are only of a pole that makes them thus attracted to the south pole gathering there en mass.
Perhaps in this world they figured some ways to create, manipulate, and utilize monopoles even more. As for their raidioactive and or poisonous effects im not really sure? They are said to have a large mass, so perhaps them being magnetic and being massive can disrupt some molecular processes? But idk I’m just a physics enthusiast not exactly an expert.
I mostly base my understanding of it from PBS space time

Been reading up on magnetic monopoles after the thought and would like to add some addendums if you dont mind.
So magnetic monopoles themselves are not really radioactive nor harmful but they seem to have a weird effect on regular dipoles magnets and magnetic particles
I would assume instead that the radioactive effect these has (assuming they are indeed kojima particles) are instead due to how they affect moving particles around them.
Ive read some article stating that regular magnetic dipoles would spin in a spiral around a monopole. Perhaps this phenomena would create synchrotron radiation which is a radiation caused by charged particles moving in a curved path.
Synchrotron radiation is highly hazardous due to the X-rays it emits alongside visible light which is often blue light.
Now heres an additional theory. Whenever ACs or NEXTs use kojima particles its often characterized with a kind of plasma effect. Im assuming the mech generates the plasma which will be the charged particles that will be used in tandem with the monopoles.
With this i hypothesize that the reason you have extreme storms of kojima particles in the south pole. Is because of how auroras work.
Auroras occur due to charged solar wind ions being routed by the earths magnetic field towards the poles.
And with the density of charged particles on the poles and with the high density of kojima particles being gathered at the south pole
You have extreme levels of synchrotron radiation replacing the southern aurora.

Kojima Particle, or what I like to call "The Demon Particle".
Everything has been explained pretty well by you, so I will let out all my thought about it.
Why do I call it "The Demon Particle"?
Mainly because it almost have the same behavior as "Demon Core", and I'm sure you know it by meme and all, otherwise, it's the third bomb that about to hit Japan, but when Japan surrender it is retained for testing and potential later use. In the case of Demon Core, when Slotin accidentally slipped thus completely covering the Demon Core and instantly enter supercritical, releasing an blue-light intense burst of neutron radiation for half a second... what happen if it was more than half a second?
Then what's the deal between Kojima Particle and Demon Core?
Both has pretty similar behavior of being destructive weapon within a small thing. One thing that stick the most is certainly Assault Armor, when activate it 3~ seconds of delay before exploding within 50m-200m radius for another ~3 seconds. Not to mention AA is larger than Demon Core and mostly in spherical-shape, so it is almost safe to assume the Assault Armor work almost the same as Demon Core. One can imagine the devastating power it hold... maybe like the explosion in Front Mission 3 during Emma's route, but leave more radiation behind? Or you know... Kitasaki Junction. "50,000 people used to live here... now it's a ghost town."
This bring to the other similar particle... The GN Particles from Gundam OO. I honestly forgor what's OO is about, so I'm just gonna briefly explain.
GN Particle are particle that created by the GN Drives which used for modern mobile suit technology (mirroring Kojima become the foundation for NEXT, the "NEXT" step of Normals). GN Particle also behave like an EMP, while also having the ability to improve the cutting ability of a blade, and able to increase/decrease the mass and therefore weight of an object. And this is the most important part, GN Particle can also inflict poison to anyone exposed to it and caused cellular damage.
As a reference, Gundam OO aired in 2007, while Armored Core 4 released in 2006.
Thank you for coming to my TED-Talk, see you next video.

I have to clear something up about the GN particle: it's only the red colored version emitted from counterfeit GN drives that was found to be poisonous to organic life. The main protagonist by the end of the series manipulated the stable and better refined particles from his Gundam by use of quantum sci-fi magic to actually heal a comrade who was slowly dying from exposure to its counterfeit version.

Honestly kinda wonders what it kojima particle is made of, but beside that i'm more interested in how its controlled and its applied tech, since i feel like a lot of shit i know from mechanical stuff and electrical stuff kinda don't apply here or is basicly more into the atomic stuff.
For example mechanism of quick boosting it self. When quick boosting happen you need to wait for a while if you do it too much if its a high power booster like the aaliyah's, and some booster can be perma flight booster like omer.
Like is there some kind of kojima based carborateur where like a toilet tank if you press it, dumps the particle and possibly mixed with hydrogen fuel into a combustion, but having to wait if the said tank went empty ?. And does it even require pressure chamber because... in how Assault Armor works tbh, it blast the Primal armor bubble with all available generated kojima particle, i imagine in order to create an outward blast pressure, there must be a something to hold the pressure build up pre explosion.
What we know however is bullet passing primal armor have reduced damage, so i imagine KOJIMA PARTICLE SON either HARDEN to PHYSICAL TRAUMA erhm... or become overheated sandpaper, either by nature or sensor inputed as being constantly solid would make movement impossible for legs and arms.
now hear me out what if manipulation of kojima particle characteristic of being able to turn from gas to solid at will via AMS allow any of this, the closest we have is magnetic field in its analogy, but even that doesn't have much in way of how PARTICLES like billion of little sands or gas is manipulated at will by the NEXT AMS, and does anything at all in the next even works with the same priciple we understood right now ?. Like does next thruster even have fuel or compressor system ? Or does it just straight up go on basicly kojima jet fire, while compressing said kojima with other kojima with the similar bubble system as primal armor ?.
Does round shape had to do with resisting Assault armor pressure cooking ?.
Theres so many stuff to dig tbh. Hell even how does AMS control these particle ?, how AMS Compatibility even relate to this does kojima magic enchance human psychic power to literraly manipulate the matter at will ? And along with that does FRS memory came from machine ai optimising or the human senses being more attuned with kojima manipulation that they can pick and choose which part to boost with it ????.
Shit the whole tech it self has more sketchy things than all dark souls lore combined.

@@armoredcorelore all i'm saying is everything about a next beside of it being a mach 1 plus giant robot with big guns and energy shield is the fact the all little details inside of them is very alien to what we have in real world. Like how stick and throttle is outright replaced with direct AMS connection to the pilot, the kojima physics of the whole energy system basicly replaced anything assumed known from a jet engine like compression. AMS and Kojima system relationship it self is another issue of how while controling all the system of the mech the pilot also control kojima manipulation at will for any defensive, mobility and offensive use along with the implication of a growth attunement between the pilot and machine with the FRS.
Its all little details but basicly a NEXT is really living up to its name, A Next Gen of everything combined at once, wether its the machine, pilot, and energy all three is unseparatable to how each influence each other at its core.

When trying to describe what a Kojima particle is, I think you mistake atoms and particles. You compare it to known nuclear materials, but those are all elements.
Radiation itself is a particle, so they can't give off radiation by themselves, they'd have to interact with something to produce more radiation than the presumably already radioactive Kojima particles themselves.

no such technology was mentioned in the archives. However, it does seem they are using a contained source of Kojima particles as you can see it lights up red rather than green, and doesn't produce the same pollution particles like the N-WGIX.
which one can assume either they sterilized the poisonous radiation effects of the particles to be be less harmful to the surface yet still deadly to vaporize armored suits and weaponry, or they made their own technology based on the particles, (attempting to copy it)
we can heavily assume that they use Kojima in the meantime.
