Lyrics
When, now?
I am Shortie I be 4'11"
I am I be, I am I am, are you taping now?
I am Shortie, do that again
I am Patrick, I be the biggest shrimp collector in the world
I am Shortie I be 4’11”
I am Shortie I be 4’11”
I am Jack and I
I am Shortie
I am Shortie I be 4’ 11”
I am Shortie I be 4’ 11”
I am Q-Tip, I be friction
I am Tasha, I be black
I am Shortie, I be 4’11”
I be in happy, I be in love
I am Shortie, I be 4’11”
I am Posdnous
I be the new generation of slaves
Here to make papes to buy a record exec rakes
The pile of revenue I create
But I guess I don't get a cut cuz my rent's a month late
Product of a North Carolina cat
Who scratched the back of a pretty woman named Hattie
Who departed life just a little too soon
And didn't see me grab the Plug Tune fame
As we go a little somethin' like this
Look ma, no protection
Now I got a daughter named Ayana Monet
And I can play the cowboy to rustle in the dough
So the scenery is healthy where her eyes lay
I am an early bird but the feathers are black
So the apples that I catch are usually all worms
But it's a must to decipher one's queen
From a worm who plays groupie and spread around the bad germ
I cherish the twilight
I maximize, my soul is the right size
I watch for the power to run out on the moon
(And that'll be sometime soon)
Faker than a fist of kids
Speakin’ that they're black
When they're just niggas trying to be Greek
Or some tongues who lied
And said "We'll be natives to the end"
Nowadays we don't even speak
I guess we got our own life to live
Or is it because we want our own kingdom to rule?
Every now and then I step to the now
For now I see back then I might have acted like a fool
Now I won't apologize for it
This is not a bunch of Brady’s
But a bunch of black man's pride
Yet I can safely say
I've never played a sister by touching where her private parts reside
I've always walked the right side of the road
If I wasn't making song I wouldn't be a thug selling drugs
But a man with a plan
And if I was a rug cleaner
Betcha Pos'd have the cleanest rugs I am
The Plug Two brand with the flavor
In the flute watch the sniffin'
So a sack of shows in demand
I read the diction from the second page
I got the one-two gauge
Baritone to the izm fan
Trees fall so I can play ground with my ink
So let me need ya to my Ms go
I push the infinite and carry it
My carrier's the three over one
So my pluggins already know
Lick shots with my woo
Catch the boo
From a ghost in the heckling crowd
If I give a foot
Jack Ville caught a spill
When a still came from my mouth
I put her head down south
I don't check for the noose and the neck
So I never tell my ems
That finesse is knocking at my door
I choose to run from the rays of the burning sun
And dodge a needle washing up upon a sandy shore
I bring the element H with the 2
So ya owe me what's coming when I'm raining on your new parade
It's just mind over matter
And what matters is
That the mind isn't guided by the punished shade
I keep the walking on the right side
But I won't judge the next who handles walking on the wrong
Cuz that's how he wants to be
No difference, see
I wanna be like the name of this song I Am
I am Posdnous
I be the new generation of slaves
Here to make papes to buy a record exec rakes
The pile of revenue I create
But I guess I don't get a cut cuz my rent's a month late
The deeds of a natural
Are seeds that are no longer planted
So the famine in the mind is strong
Tactics of another plane is now proven sane
Sane enough to let you know from within this song
I stabilize many cableized viewers
So my occupation's known
But not why I occupy
And that is to bring the peace
Not in the flower but the As-Salaam Alaikum in the third I am
I am Dres, and I be
I am, I am Busta
I am Kim, and I be chillin the hell out
I am Bob, and I be really, really tired of doing this here guys

This track is just beyond words to me. It encapsulates a period in time I’ll cherish for the rest of my days. Thank you DLS for creating this.
i agree 100%
RIP Dave. A beautiful group of creators I only appreciate more as those days slip further into the past.
yeah man this is the one .. I am 72 I be 4 the Soul
In my opinion this is the most depressing album I've ever heard. That being said I love it. It's the 3rd album they're building families and losing people and realizing where they fit in the world. Huge impact on my life. De la is and always will be the greatest.
@@1ron_Mike You're right, it's just amazing that it could outdepress an album called "De La Soul Is Dead"
This is the one. It may be my favorite De La cut ever, especially as I grow older 🕊
I wish I woulda heard this when it was released. But even still, I’m hearing this for first time ever and I’m smiling ear to ear. Quality music I tell you. Dove and the crew have left behind a great legacy.
I gotta be honest with you, I was in my 30’s when this 1st came out. I was already a DeLaSoul head. This. Blew. My. Fuckin’ Minnnd. Both their verses are RIDICULOUS. The BEAT?!? Yeahhhh TRUE HipHop KNEW how good this shit was…I’m so glad to read you appreciate it. It means a lot to me and my generation
It was and still is quite the experience 🌼
I was a freshman in high school. Me and my crew visited Leolas CD & Tapes store every Tuesday & Saturday for the new releases.. 1993 & 1994 were two of the best years in hip-hop history. I think Souls of Mischief came out the next week, followed by Black Moon, Tribe - Midnight Marauders, Wu-Tang, Snoop, Del several weeks later.

AND KRS-ONE/RETURN OF THE BOOM BAP, SAME LABEL AND DAY AS SOULS OF MISCHIEF..
I was stationed in Germany in 93 when this dropped. My daughter was borned in November of that year, her middle name was made off his daughter's name. I love DE LA Soul for lide.
Never thought the day would come. Bittersweet RIP Dove
Such a sad day that he never got to see. This is my favourite track they ever did
This is probably thee most intellectually honest song in hiphop history . RIP Trugoy 🕊️
Today is a great day everyone
Been rockin with De La since 1989 12th grade. 🎉
so good to hear this again.
Amen!
The most underrated De La record of alltime, Pos verse is an alltime favorite glad its back up on youtube
Interesting fact, Pos subtly disses Queen Latifah (along with Young Black Teenagers) in that verse
« Faker than a fist of kids
Speakin that they're black
When they're just niggas trying to be Greek
Or some tongues who lied
And said "We'll be natives to the end"
Nowadays we don't even speak »
My favorite track and one of the best albums ever made 💎
De La Soul FOREVER 🌻
Completely agree 💎
I am old and old school. This is one of the first CDs I had ever bought. I was in junior college and I was completely lost. This album spoke to me in soooo many ways. But especially this song. I keep this CD in my car and listen to it once a month. It does not have a lot of cursing so my two young daughters vibe to it a lot. They always say dad it does not rime and they are looking for hooks and choruses to catch on too. But now my four year old says, I am, I be I am, I be. De La Soul is not Dead. Their music lives on in my 4 and 7 year old daughters. It might blow up, but it won't go pop.....
I am
I be
Last time I listened to this
Was On Cassette RIP Dave....
me too
Me too.. ✌🏾
I saw De La Soul outdoors at the Kennedy Center in D.C. They played this and I just cried uncontrollably. I had never done that at any kind of live performance before. A lot was going on in my life and I guess something about this song and performance just struck a chord. It was an amazing release. Buhloone Mind State has always been my favorite De La album.
I ball err time I hear Stakes Is High to the point I turn it off when it comes on... It affects my synesthesia emotionally due to the times and places that these songs were put into my memory. I bumped into Dave at a Goriliza show back stage.. He was taking a pic of his sign on the dressing room door.. I asked why? ( I've toured and barley took a single shot of my own. ) he graciously educated me on time and how it ain't a lot so take it all in... Saw them twice that year!!!!! Great times I'll nerrrr 4get!!!
goosebumps
Beautiful track! I hope people finally come to realize just how PHENOMENAL this album is -- again, or for the first time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A true masterpiece!!!!!
yes yes
De La and Prince Paul dialed it in perfectly here. Been listening to this for damn near thirty years straight.
My favourite De La Soul track of all time. Rest in peace, Plug Two. 🕊️

Always wondered who was the 4th guy on the cover? He doesn't look like Paulie?
Nah, I'm pretty positive that _is_ Prince Paul...
@@Jimmy1982Playlists Yeah maybe so, always went back n forth on this?😂
Is Pos really dissing queen Latifah?
you ain't Keith Murray
@@sam-mv7nm no, but my user name is 😅😅😅😅
Pos said it was Q Tip in a DJ Vlad De La interview.
Good news is that’s all behind them apparently.
@@77Creation I'm still mad at Tip for not publicly acknowledging Dave's passing
Yes, it’s Queen Latifah: “I guess we got our own Kingdom to rule.”
Stop sleeping theme song real hip hop 🤬
Succcccch. Incrediblllee. Musssssic
One of my all time favorites. Heartbroken to lose Plug 2 right before all this was finally made available.
