      +Alyssa Chiarello. I ASMed just one play in college (my theater major required some crew-practicum credits & I didn't have time to do anything beyond the minimum: I did props & sound for other productions)... Anyway: when I ASMed, my actors were "thank you five"-rs. Since you're a SM I shall ask you: who *doesn't* have the courtesy to "Thank you five"? All well-brought-up BFAs, MFAs (& even experienced High School actors) should know to acknowledge the crew... though when I was at Stagedoor Manor as a camper in the 90s, we didn't "TY5"

    • @alyssachiarello382
      @alyssachiarello382 Před 3 lety +1

      Jeff Black ah yes. You’d be surprised. Since the “five” cue comes in the most stressful part of the show (usually before places) lots of actors focus on themselves and getting ready, instead of acknowledging the crew. It might seem like a small gesture to respond, but it confirms that the actor has heard and understands the message.

    • @jeffblack8457
      @jeffblack8457 Před 3 lety

      @@alyssachiarello382 Of course! If actors are deep in their own heads getting into character - or loudly doing last-min vocal warm-ups - they might *not* hear "5" even if they seem to nod or smile in response. Which is why - exactly as you said - it's so helpful when actors make it clear they've heard & understood! Anyway: these kids in the video are all driven, talented, & well-trained; they likely understand that being courteous (and friendly!) to crew is essential to building a career. Right now the job market for actors is terrible (it's always bad, but this pandemic has been a disaster). Some of these soon-to-be-BFAs will graduate *owing* more than $275k, so for them, being nice to everyone is an especially good idea... you never know whether a crew member - even a student! - has important connections in the real world & can help you get cast (or hurt your chances) given an opportunity.

      And that's assuming they don't raise prices while you're there... but every year they do raise prices!
      By contrast, Michigan residents will only spend $130,000 for the same 4-year degree.. assuming they don't raise prices. These numbers are for kids who just started school this semester.

    Dear MT21, even though I do not know you and have nothing to do with the SMTD at Michigan, this video has compelled me to write you something, for it has moved me. I discovered the other senior entrances a few days ago, and greatly enjoyed them. Having studied theatre myself (theatre making and education) in the Netherlands, and also still parttime studying musical theatre there, it fills me with feelings of nostalgia. Even though I do not get most of your inside jokes, they remind me of our own theatre department's inside jokes and it's always nice to revisit those memories of my college years.
    But your senior entrance is, of course, something else completely. It is amazing to see what you have accomplished in spite of everything that's going on. The singing, sound-mix and lip-sync is on point, the choreography and filmography is amazing, and what touches me most is your fighting spirit. Even though it's a lip-synced performance, because you had no choice, it still gets the message across. And what a message it is! You chose to not only focus on funny musical theatre jokes or your own heart-warming journeys (luckily, you also had plenty of that going on), but used your senior entrance to try and make the world a better place. And even though I do not know any of you, I have faith that you are a lovely bunch of people that are not only amazing artists, but will also do some good in the world. Keep being amazing, and err...go Blue! (Am I saying that right?)
    P.S.: I laughed very hard at the 'Zoom University' part, man, that one hit home, so relatable!
    Love from the Netherlands,
    Chris

    I’ve watched these as they came out every year since 2019 and now I’m a senior in high school about to begin the college audition process with my dream school being UMich. I’m manifesting that I’ll be one of the freshmen next year’s iteration will be directed at. It’s everything I’ve been working toward and I know I’ll get it.

    Ok but before we do let’s rank the last few years. For me:
    1.) 2018. They LOVE eachother, you can feel it! So much talent. And the writing- creativity and perfection like professional Broadway book-stuff! Everyone’s a Little Bit Ratchet?! The La La Land moment! That finale? When their ‘incredible line’ becomes an ‘M’? * Chef’s kiss* Perfect 11/10 made me cry rewatch at least once a week for feels.
    2.) 2020. Let’s talk about that Hadestown moment WOAH, with the dark and phones and Xan Berube’s soprano “My phone’s on 3% and it started raining” holy shit, I would listen to this section on repeat over the cast album. Also so much joy, and black excellence and celebration of LGBTQ+. Incredible comic timing all round and wow that choreo STOP IT
    3.) 2019. Would 100% have benefited from subtitles to get its full effect. What a crazy amazing collection of voices?! A++ for sass and chaotic energy.
    4.) 2017. Less polished, less emotional but would also have slapped more with subtitles cos audio was sketchy at points. However, soo many hilariously funny moments. Still lolling @ “Music Theory? Probs won’t need it.” Most importantly- holy sh** that rendition of ‘Seventeen’ made the hairs on my neck stand up, listen to it on repeat (and loving seeing Simon Longnight and Nkeki Obi-Melekwe geeking out over it in the audience in the most adorable way)

    So one of these ended up in my suggestions thanks to the algorithm. I've watched about 4-5 now. They've all been great but this one is the first one that brought me to tears multiple times. This was PHENOMENAL. You all did an amazing job. And to think that you planned, practiced, and pulled this off in the middle of the flustercluck that was 2021 makes it even more incredible. I cannot WAIT to see what this group will go on to do in the future! This was an amazing production and you are ALL incredibly talented performers. Sincerely, a 38 year old former theater kid who just laughed and cried through this whole thing and *loved* ever freaking second of it.

Unsung heroes man

I didn't go to this school, I'm 38, and I live in Germany so I have no idea how this was suggested to me - but it brought back incredible memories of when I used to do MT when I was younger, so glad that it did.
