Fuel Cap Keeps Falling Off! How to Fix it! Briggs "Plastic" Engine

- A brand new fuel cap didn't solve this problem. The fuel cap continued to leak and sometimes fall off. I decided to try a thicker, tighter O-ring/gasket, and this problem was fixed for less than two bucks!

Thank you sir. You just saved me 15 bucks and a 30 day stay in a padded room wearing a backwards jacket with weird straps that hug my arms too tight. You're doing the Lord's work.
Thank you so much for this information! I searched high and low for a cap with a decent o ring, but all I hear is the same thing, they keep coming loose, and soon after they disappear or disintegrate. It's really sad that these lawnmower manufacturers can't be bothered with such a small, but very important problem to fix, but instead, they prefer to lose many customers. Pathetic if you ask me! Thanks to people like yourself for taking the time to share this information.
Thank you so much I just paid over $500 for this Toro and I was ready to return it
Brand new Toro walk behind mower with same issue. Thanks for the video.
Thanks, spent more time looking for where the gas cap went than I spent cutting grass. Couldn't figure out why it wouldn't stay on, bad design.
Yes, the o-ring solution I suggest will solve that problem for you.
YES!!!!! I just had the same issue with my DR Trimmer.
I just ordered a new gas cap for my mower. I’m so glad I seen this before it gets here. Much appreciation for the link to the gaskets. Thanks again
You just saved my sanity. Heading down to get the gasket. Thank you.
Unfortunately i mowed right over it. Thanks to your video i can get the correct gasket.
Thank you for the video. My BF kept insisting I wasn't tightening the cap. I'm like, I know how to tighten a gas cap. You're my hero!!!
Oh yeah! Better tell the BF you've got a new hero!!!
Very helpful video. I bought an O-ring at Ace hardware for .79 cents. It was a 1 3/4 O.D. and 1 9/16 I.D. It fit like a glove on the gas cap. The cap is nice and tight now on the mower.
Awesome!!
Spent 20 min staring at my gas cap trying to figure out why it wasn't staying on. Brand new toro with only 6 cuts on it. That's ridiculous smh. Ty for this video!
Thanks for the note. Get the o-ring I mentioned, and this problem will be solved once and for all!
DUDE. I have the same mower and same issue! lol no way! Great video
Buck thank you so much for the video and the measurements for the O-Ring. Worked perfectly. All the best and thanks again.
I've been looking for it for 2 days
Thanks. Have a Briggs 596250 that was leaking took the old o-ring out and went to the hdw store. Got a thicker one for 79c and it works fine.
Excellent advice! My Toro lawnmower uses the same engine & same cap.. last time it fell off, I ran over it and mulched it into 500 pieces!!😀 I ordered a new cap... but now I'll get an O-ring too -Thank you
Thanks, Bob, and good luck. Pretty odd problem, to be sure. I figured there were probably a lot of folks out there wrestling with the same issue....
Hahaha. Same! I was out in the back 40 when it happened. Saw gas flying all over and thought “hey, that’s not right!” That’s when it dawned on me the cap was missing. “No problem! Let me find it…here and here and over there..”
Ate my lunch, took sandwich bag and a rubber band to build a make shift cap until I got back.
Good thing. You got this video because I've got the same problem with mine and I've got the same mower, but it's a high. Wheel one and it's a front wheel drive.🚙🚙🚌🚜
Going to try it. Thanks a million.
Great fix!!!!
Thank you from the least handy person in America! I was all set to go to the hardware store tomorrow, when I looked closely at the gas cap, I noticed the ring had slipped out of place. Pushed it back down into place, and now my cap is staying on!
Don't sell yourself short; you're capable of more than you think! Good job getting it all sorted out, and thanks for watching the video!
Thank you, went online to see if there was a recall on this but this is even better.
No kidding, ridiculous.
Thanks for this! I was about to buy a new cap because mine is leaking and comes off even with the slightest bump by a low tree branch or bush, but now I know to just put a thicker o-ring on to fix 👍🏻
Right. I tried a new cap, and that was not the solution. Thanks for watching the video!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. The original cap fell off and I ran over it. The new one I bought was no better. REALLY FRUSTRATING. Shame on Briggs & Stratton. Mine has always been a problem. Off to buy a gasket now. Thanks again.
Thank you so much this is exactly what happened to my exact same lawnmower today you saved me thank you!!
Thank you, Mary.
Wow this was SO helpful, THANK YOU!!!!
Worked perfectly for my Toro 163cc push mower. Thanks!
Awesome. Thanks, Aaron.
This issue on my Toro lawn mower has been driving me nuts! When I cut my grass today I was thinking I would never buy a Toro again. I actually love the mower except for this silly problem. Don't know if it ever had a gasket or not, but thank you for this, I'm going to Ace tomorrow!
To be fair, it's not a Toro problem, but a Briggs & Stratton problem, as Toro gets their engines from Briggs. Anyway, you will never lose your gas cap again once you install the gasket I recommend in this video. Thanks for watching and for the note.
We have a John Deer riding mower that has this problem and three times I’ve had to replace the gas cap at $35 a pop! I’m off to the hardware store! Thanks for the tip.
Thank you, and good luck!
Thanks for the informative video.
Thank you.
Thanks. Worked great. 👍
Thanks for putting this up. I can't believe Toro has discontinued most parts; especialy the gas cap; for my mower, but sure looks to be the same B & S engine. Nothing like planned obsolescence on a 2 yo mower. Its a great mower, but I can't believe they'd discontinue parts; including the air filter; on a $500 mower. If I eva gotta replace this one, I'm goin back to the buck and half mowers :>). I had been looking at rubber O-rings before I came upon your vid since I measured the cap, but since the original was gone, I wasn't sure what size the OD and Width were, so this made it real simple. Thanks again.
When working on the engine, search for Briggs & Stratton parts (not Toro). Use the model number, type, and code. All the parts for these engines are easily available. Good luck.
Great Video! I have had the exact same issue. Thank you!
Wow, thanks! I though I was going bananas...it was a missing O-ring.
Thank you so much!!!!!!
The thumbnail looked long, but the video was a good length. Great tip.
Thank you. Your specific o ring specifications was exactly what I needed to fix my gas cap. My lawn mower looked like the one in your video. Was able to fix my gas cap that would not stay on for more than 10 seconds while running for a 2 dollar part from a hardware store.
Great job, Robert. A silly little problem, wasn't it? But I figured if I was having this problem, other people out there probably were too. Glad the video was helpful!
I found 3 places that carry it. Ace Hardware, very impressive selection of O-rings, O'riellys, possible two different ones (222), and NAPA. Supply issues are still a very big problem but I found it at NAPA. They had several of them.
Good info. Thanks.
Thank you so much for this video! I ran over the 1st cap that came off,,, distroyed it. Bought another, wrong cap and broke the plastic thing that was to go in the tank... Cant return it. 3rd one flew off somewhere, searched and searched for it. Cant find it. Now Im off to buy another with the o ring. Thank you so much for the info. I have more money in gas caps then the mower is worth. Lol
Thanks for the chuckle! And you're right...a new gas cap (even the correct one!) won't solve the problem. The re-sized o-ring that I describe in the video will be your solution. Thank you!
The same with me! Love my Snapper mower! I've spent $38 so far on 2 caps and now lost the 3rd one! WHY would Briggs and Stratton put such an inferior gas cap??? Then not permitting peons get in touch with them with complaints!
@@sandraj753 Sandra, get the o-ring that I describe in this video, and you will never lose your gas gap again, I promise.
It’s been 2 years and they still haven’t fixed problem. Thanks for help. I don’t know why they can’t use a better cap on a 500 dollar mower but what do I know
Thanks fixed my problem.
Thank you.
always great info
Keep the projects coming, my friend!
This worked well. Thanks.
Great. So tell my why Briggs & Stratton couldn't have done it that way from the start?
@@Buckwsr that I’m not sure of. I searched for “Toro gas cap recall” and found your video. lol
Guess never had this problem, but good to know tho. Thanks
Fixed mine today. Works great. Went to Ace hardware.
Can't find the gasket, what department would someone find this?
@@kirkdatema8289 I asked the guy there. in Ace Hardware there is a section for O Rings.
Helpful video. Had the same issue with our little self propelled push mower. Those nails need to be trimmed though. Yikes.
I am a left-handed classical guitarist. Hence, the nails. My toenails, however, have no such excuse, and they're out of control!
This completely solved my problem. Thanks so much. 👏👏😀🌈🇭🇲👏👏👏
going to try this for a toro time master cap not coming off but leaks when yo tilt it to clean grass out of the bottom Florida st augustine grass is always wet . 9 bucks on amazon for 100 figured it is the same as a trip to hardware store since gas at 6 bucks a gallon lol. Thanks for video I will try it looks the same measurements at quick glance in shed
Take care Iron aka Kevin
Thanks, Kevin, and good luck!
BTW, you can use the old plastic bag trick when tilting the mower on its side. Remove fuel cap, cover opening with plastic bag, replace fuel cap. Unless of course, evil plastic bags are outlawed down in Florida like they are here in NJ....
Yes!!!!!!
Does this also work on the 725 exi stow and go?
Where do the gaskets go? and what are the gaskets made of?
He said, I'll look to see if theres a better price, he comes back and said no.
It's not missing an o-ring. It comes this way from the factory. It is a shitty gas cap and everyone complains about them falling off. I have lost 3 so far. They simply come off during normal operation and get run over or lost. It's total crap.
Get the O-ring I discuss in the video and you will never lose your gas cap again. I promise~
Thanks, man! EXACT issue that I am having
This has been a pain
Now I can fixs my sisters
Thanks so much. I've been using duct tape for the past year (maybe 2)!!!
Same problem with several Troybilt mowers: Gasket is not missing, cap becomes unscrewed (particularly if it brushes lower branches of shrubs during mowing), then falls off if I haven't noticed it's loose (flimsy clip is borderline useless). Why doesn't Briggs & Stratton fix this problem?
You're right, Donald. B&S needs to do better. Get the O-ring I discuss in this video, and I promise you that your fuel cap will never come loose or fall off again. Thanks for watching the video, and commenting. I really appreciate it.
Wow,
I’m going to try this on my new toro mower, gas cap popped off both times I’ve used the mower so far, going under a bush it hit something and pulls the lid right off. “Don’t go under the low bush” is not an acceptable answer, this is a serious design flaw and to me can create a very serious hazard.
I hope this works and maybe someone from the companies using this engine will take notice.
yeah, what a bad design....wow! How hard can it be to design a fuel cap that actually stays on? Thanks for watching and commenting.
Question when and why did briggs and stratton get away from screw tops anyone know . some kind of safety thing or just cost
Wondering the same thing!
after using it with the new o ring for awhile, i am now wondering if it could be just a smidge smaller.
when its been on for awhile on a warm day, its gets pretty hard to get the cap off. (i had to use one of those rubber oil filter "wrench" thingys.)
is there perhaps a happy medium that wouldn't vibrate off but also not "glue" itself on in the heat? maybe a width of 3/32 or 7/64 with inside and outside diameters adjusted accordingly?
i just clicked the link under the video so i have no idea how to go about finding one with those exact dims, or if that size even exists, although i assume it could be made. 3D printer?
Good note. Thank you so much for the feedback. The new o-ring truly is pretty darn snug. Of course, that's better than falling off! I'm sure there are other sizes of o-rings you could try, perhaps a bit small. Please let me know if you find something that works better. Thanks again.
@@Buckwsrok so i figured i'd start by checking the size of the original o ring. best method i found was to cut it and feed it thru a drill bit gage.
well i was surprised to find it was 7/64 since that is only 1/64 less than the new one.
but ... i went ahead and checked the size of the new one and it came in at 9/64, not 1/8.
also noticed the math doesnt add up: 1 & 3/4 outside diameter minus 1 & 1/2 inside diameter would be 1/4, not 1/8.
well maybe most of that doesnt matter, but i think the positive takeaway here is that a width that is in fact 1/8 might be the perfect size.
(not sure if the diameters matter much as long as its big enough to get on the cap.)
next i plan on checking on that amazon ad to see why the math is wrong and if perhaps the sent me the wrong size?
@@jshantideguire It's 1/8 on both sides, which makes 1/4. That's how I view it. Thanks for your thoroughness.
@@Buckwsr aha! yes of course you have to double that 1/8. i guess i was thinking of the radius.
but still the width of the one i got from the amazon ad came in at 9/64, not 1/8.
however in the details down below they list the sizes as 1.48 and 1.76 Inches so perhaps the distance there is in fact 9/64 (just 1/64 more than 1/8)
again i know the math doesnt matter at the end of the day if it fits and works, but i guess the goal would be to get one that is in fact truly 1/8.
any thoughts on that? maybe take my drill gage and scissors down to the hardware store?
in any case thanks again for getting me on the right track to getting it sorted out. btw the problem i was having with my cap coming off was getting debris in the tank and clogging the carb, which i've had to take apart 3 or 4 times and replace twice (before i figured out how to take it apart and clean it), so this has been a major problem for me
Gas cap on my Toro keeps vibrating off
I replace the gas cap also has a new gasket but still leaks, it's s stupid design there should be a rubber seal on the bottom of cap to create a seal because my mower does not make a seal around the cap.
Use the link in the description to get the gasket/o-ring I use in this video. You'll get a tight, leak-free fit, and problem solved. A new cap alone won't do it. That's what I first tried, but it still leaked and fell off.
where did you get a new cap and do you have the part number?
i got the 10-pack from the amazon link and so far its working great. i dont need 9 more extra. anybody need one?
Ha ha. Share them with your friends.
If the gasket works so great, why do you have to buy it in a pack of ten? I put a gas cap on mine from an old PT cruiser and it’s working fine and never falls off! I ran over so many gas caps. I can’t even tell you how many at this point. Also, is this a universal Briggs & Stratton gas cap because you’re not stating what kind of mower it is Briggs & Stratton. Also on the gas there’s a plastic nozzle coming out at the top of it facing towards the air filter. Mine does not have a hole in it. It seems like it has no purpose at all. Should it have a hole in it and if so, wouldn’t gasoline come out of it onto the air filter?
Not to be a debbie downer but over time wont the rubber o ring degrade and fall into the gas tank due to the gasoline that's why they originally had a hard plastic gasket? just asking.
Check back a year from now, and let me know....

what is the part number for the cap?
For this particular mower, the fuel cap is Briggs & Stratton part number 594061
Is that o ring fuel safe?

Absolutely ridiculous that they can complicate such a simple item.
Gas containers you can't pour and gas caps that won't stay on.
Which is more dangerous ?
You know the answer. 🤯
Thanks, Gordon.
Thank you ! Your remedy was a perfect
Agree 💯
Great video and advice but... 1¾"-1½"=¼"
You have to count the 1/8" thickness of the o-ring twice. In other words, the difference between the outside diameter of the o-ring and the inside diameter of the o-ring is 2 times the thickness of the o-ring. So my numbers are correct.
I went down to my local lawn care parts store and they wanted to sell me a gas cap. They don't carry o-rings. My mower is a little over a year old. I guess $20 is better than $2. Damn thieves. This seems to be a pretty common issue with these B&S. I wish they had the screw on ones like my older mower has that is 25 years old and still works fine. Kmart mower vs Craftsman. I am finished with buying Craftsman products.
Go to ACE or True Value Hardware for the o-ring. Or use the amazon link in the video description. Your gas cap will never fall off again.
B&S could screw up a free lunch 😒

Now I missing the cap and they want $42.00 for one
I called the sears #
Something seems wrong on the math there. 1/2 is 2/4 so 3/4 would be 1/4 difference, not 1/8. I'm not the best at math but what I just said seems to make sense to me. Please explain if I am wrong. Please don't construe this as sarcasm I just want to know what size ring I should be looking for. I've already traveled 40 miles and spent over $16. for a new cap and it's no better than the one that fell off, me not noticing, and was mowed to bits and pieces.
You have to count the thickness of the o-ring twice. In other words, the difference between the outside diameter and the inside diameter is two times the thickness of the o-ring. Visualize the o-ring laying on the table and measure across from left to right: Left side of o-ring is 1/8”, plus inside diameter of o-ring 1 and 1/2, plus right side of o-ring also 1/8”, makes outside diameter a total length of 1 and 3/4 inches. 1/8 + 1.5 + 1/8 = 1.75. Buy the o-ring I describe in this video and your gas cap issue will be solved definitively!
@@Buckwsr Ahh, Thanks. I'm on it as soon as the stores open. I bought a new gas cap and it still is loose as a baby tooth on an 8 yo.
I told them its a plastic or rubber cap I said have they lost there mind I said that's just greedy
I said Iam not paying that m Yu ch for a plastic cap n said bye
Crazy! Order the o-ring I mention in this video and you will never lose the cap again.
Beats the heck out of my duct tape temp fix.
Just started to run into this same issue spraying gasoline everywhere! I tried a rubber band for today because I figured out it was the gasket, but it was a very poor substitute (terrible in fact I don't recommend). Thank you for the dimensions I'm headed to the store right now.
I have same issue and tried same thing. Getting new cap bc I finally lost it and having O-Ring ready for when gasket fails again bc I’m sure new cap will have same problem
