First let me say I enjoy your videos. Second just picked up a 1965 18hp fastwin today. Very clean .I haven't ran it yet as I'm working at the firehouse this weekend. Oh well it's raining anyway. I let you know how it turns out. The price was very good at140$.
Okay Ed I got the evinrude 18hp fastwin running and took it out today. I even gave you a nice shout out. You can see it on on CZcams channel "Rick George".
@@retireeslife4013, got a 1965 18hp Fastwin also. Put in new points, condensers, spark plugs, checked the spark plug wires for continuity, tested the coils & gaped the magneto correctly. Thing ran like a beast. Very happy & impressed with it !
Picked up one of these last fall its a 1968, replaced the water pump, thermostat, rebuilt the fuel pump replaced fuel lines, re sealed lower unit replaced shift shaft seal, starts runs idles, but I have water spraying out around the shift shaft cover plate and yes the gasket behind, the plate is good, I have no idea where its comming from, only thing I can see when dropping lower unit is when I look up into housing to the block area there may be a gromment up there that could be leaking not sure, don't see anything on the diagrams of the motor, have you come across this before on these? Thanks martin
I got a 66 Fastwin a couple of years ago that ran like yours. Loved it! Now it takes 15 pulls before it will start and I have to feather the throttle or it will die. Wish I could get it repaired.
Question for everyone, I currently have a 1984 Honda 10hp B100S on our aluminum flat bottom jon boat. I always wish it would go faster when I'm out with the 3 kids on it. Any idea how much faster this Evinrude would be for us? I've been told going up 5-8hp would make a big difference but I don't want to spend the money if it's not anything impressive and just not worth it. Found one on CL near us. Thanks!
I just had my 1967 evinrude refreshed for the first time ever. N my rpm dont sound that high. But I have 120 compression n new electronics points n all you know but still it will push me in a heavy tri hull fiberglass boat about 21mph but my boat do seem to be running that high of a rpm is something wrong with my motor can I adjust something I haven't already done?
These 22 cubic inch workhorses are awesome and if they have good compression you should dalways grab them when available. Pass on the old 10's - the 18 or 20 doesn't weigh much more and has much better torque and useful power.
Did that start porpoising on you there for a second? Nice strong runner by the way. Just picked one similar to that really cheap & the guy said it didn't run but it just needed a good carb cleaning and it just purrs now.
I have a 65' and run VP race gas in it. runs like it was in 1965. It loves that stuff. If I don't want to spend $9.99/gal I'll use premium and a bottle of 104 octane boost.
Chach Camacho clean the carb really good, new fuel lines and pump...those are always my first steps on old 60s motors. This particular motor has a fixed high speed jet, so if it backfiring at idle(?), it’s probably too rich, can adjust the low speed knob to correct. The factory setting is the low speed jet screw(not the knob on front) all the in, lightly seated, then back off 1.5 turns. Start it up and LEAN it out from there by turning the same screw clockwise till it stops coughing and the rpm pick up and smooth out. You will need to remove the linkage from the knob to the actual jet screw, loosen the retainer a tiny bit so you can turn screw easily. Then when she running nicely, tighten back up the retainer, put the linkage back on with the knob in the middle of its adjustment so you can fine tune if needed. But again, first step is cleaning the fuel system out, take the bowl off, clean the float and hinge, spray carbclean in every hole, take jets out and spray those holes, new gasket kits are available on marinengone.com, etc...lots of videos on here showing the process. I automatically replace fuel lines no matter what, and I add an inline fuel filter before the pump.
Is your regular occupation a outboard mechanic? I LOVE your vidoes! Do you own a 18 h.p. 1960-1962 Johnson Outboard? My dad had 1 in electric start on our boat growing up as a kid......on a old wooden runabout that leaked like a siv!......LOL!
@@chrysleroutboarddude Thanks! I ended buying a 2003 2-stroke 15hp Mercury on an 81’ Lund 14Dlx last weekend. Seems to run smoothly. Hoping for warmer temps this weekend to get it out. Take care.
Well took my 18hp evinrude on the lake today and it idled great but was sluggish in throttle response and wouldn't rev past 1/3 throttle with the tiller at wot. Is this a carb or ignition issue? The motor shouldn't be weak, it has great compression and idles down to a crawl.
It is opening up all the way and I won't be back to the lake for a few weeks but Ill describe it to the best of my ability. It would would throttle up smoothly with no hesitation but very sluggish.
it does require a bit of choke to keep it running until it warms up. Could it be a fuel pump issue? Also my fuel line fitting that clips on to the tank has 1/8in of back and forth play when connected. When a former outboard ripped off the back of my boat it ripped the fuel line assembly off with it, connectors an all. The tank male fitting looks ok. Could this cause a fuel delivery issue?
Ethan Brazee Well it sounds like it is only running on one cylinder, but it is super hard for me to tell without seeing it! Take a look at the spark plugs to see if one looks different then the other. Let me know what you find.
Ok I have it down to the ignition system right now so I'll go through it all and see what I come up with. I'll do a barrel run video for you if the problem still persists afterwards.
For some reason my 69 evinrude keeps breaking pins! I guess they just werent correct... frustrating. Got pins coming that say theyre for 18 hp and 25 hp evinrude so hopefilly those work with the new prop nut kit thats om the way too.
Retail with warranty, $350 to $400. A friend of mine has an outboard shop; that is what he's getting and he generally allows $50 to $200 for trade-in. On private party sale you should pay $50 to $300 - more if it's a cream puff.
chrysleroutboarddude I look where the tiller handle should go n it has a lever there which has start, fast, n slow there. If I take that cover of will there be gears for the tiller handle?
I wish mine would run like that.It seems that it wants to run when it wants to.I took it to a guy yesterday and the first thing he said it was a fuel pump.Called today and said it had the wrong pump on it.Said he found one but doesnt know if it will work or not.said they didnt make one for it any longer.Says he will let me know today.said also that they made two differant ones this year and I might hav the other one.Said that i might had mixed fuel wrong where its been bein mixed at fifty to one.I think I might had messed up takin it to him.Hopefully I havent.I sure wished you live around here in western n.c. id have it at your house right about now.Thats a good soundin motor.if he doesnt get it runnin right and wants me to ditch it,i think i will just wait since Ive listen to u.Shame I couldnt get in touch with you.
+rich jones Well 1st off the fuel pump will not make it run sometimes! 2nd this is the correct fuel pump www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0388685 or you can use this one but you might have to re clock it. www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=SIE18-7350 50/1 is correct for the 1965 18hp! All I do to make them run good is give them a good tune up, With all my motors i rebuild the carb with a kit www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0398532 , rebuild the mag with new coils www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0584477 , clean or replace the points, replace the condensers www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0172523 Then I reseal the gear case www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=SIE18-2684 and install a new water impeller www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=OMC0775518 So as you can see finding parts is not a problem, after the motor has had a good tune up it will run good!
+chrysleroutboarddude Would these parts work for a 1962 18hp Johnson? I just got one of these in good condition, but it hasn't run for many years. Lube looks good in the lower unit and the compression is good. Love your videos, thanks.
Now you are tugging on my heart strings, The Fastwin 18 is in my all time top 5 list. Kodibass
I just got a free one and it is in almost perfect condition it was a wonderful deal
i love it.i want either a fastwin or johnson 18.awesome

You probably need routine tune-up; start with carb clean then move to ignition tune-up. Check for clean points with correct gap.
