      Thanks for the comment. Of course, this discussion assumes that IUPAC's definition is the best one! If you peruse the Jensen paper, you will see that he used a different (though not completely unrelated) criterion: that the outermost d-orbitals of a transition metal must be free to participate in chemical bonding. In my opinion, his definition leads to the same set of elements, but does so in a more concrete and uniform fashion than IUPAC's (that is to say that any element that meets Jensen's criterion will also meet one or both of IUPAC's.
