  • A few days ago CS:GO content creator Sparkles released an interesting, albeit slightly controversial interview with two infamous hackers.
They provided insight into how they do it, the types of cheats that are becoming available, and how hackers are planning to keep the party going in CS2.
But they also shed light on what could be the most important question of all… why do cheaters cheat?

The reason why most people cheat and why I cheated is because it is like a whole new game. I was legit at first for a long time. The goal was to get to global and I did so the game lost pretty much its purpose especially because it was so repetitive. Then I started cheating and it felt like a whole new game mode. I mean playing against legits is as boring as playing the game normally, but playing HvH was fun. One thing we did with my friends was that we went to non prime and played legit and when enemies toggled, we toggled and it became an HvH.
Too often people say "cheaters cheat because they are bad" and while in some cases that may be true, most of the time cheaters are just normal players who had enough. Also if you feel like cheating is more fun than playing it regularly, cheat.

Here's a good way to stop cheaters. If someone is blatantly cheating in your game just report them and go afk. Cheaters cheat because they have a superiority complex that you're feeding into if you continue to play the game. If every game that a cheater played everyone was just afk they wouldn't get any enjoyment out of it because it would be no different than killing bots. Go afk and stop giving them the satisfaction. They chose to undermine the competitive integrity of the game, show them that you won't even acknowledge them as a serious person. If your kid starts crying and screaming because they want candy you don't give them the candy because that enables bad behavior. You're supposed to just ignore them.

    • @dennisvandante
      @dennisvandante Před rokem +17

Thats actually true about rage cheaters. You could destroy them by going afk. But there are more "legit" cheaters out there than rage ones. The legit cheaters are not that obvious cheating, so you just might think its just a really good player.

But the said kid doesn't use hacks to gain candies. They are whining simply because they don't know the value of money, they only know candies are delicious and they want those and adults like you are capable of buying those. You don't simply ignore them, you can teach them the value of it, how would kids understand why you can't give them if they got ignored? ignoring them is simply negligence behavior from a "responsible" adult
Somehow I understood why you are pushing a griefing technique against cheaters. And yes AFK is griefing no matter whose team they are.
And it doesn't justify going AFK just because there are cheaters. Cheaters would have an easier time winning which is also another reason why they would cheat simply to "win", and they would get away with it because they wouldn't show their cheats on people that aren't even moving. And they would report you for AFK.

Valve doesnt own the games and their income goes up if cheaters get banned from individual games which forces the cheaters to buy another copy. There was a guy in Day Z spawning heli's one night, he said he was on his 9th copy at the time. Arma II wouldnt have sold nearly as many after the Day Z mod if Valve was hitting cheat sites. Its in valves best interest to keep steam accounts seperate from game keys, so you can buy multiple copies of the same game without needing to lose your entire library, thus keeping cheaters in the economy. If steam started banning cheaters they would lose a lot of money overall.

I can see why people would cheat, especially when smurfing is so bad in games like CSGO. There's not much difference between having a higher skill rating but playing lower rating to give yourself an unfair advantage, by program or by actual skill. Either way, the only reason you're doing it is to feel superior about yourself. In both situations you're purposely manipulating game mechanics for your own benefit.

Good point. When I used to play CSGO I hated smurfs ruining my games all the time, I hated cheaters as well but truth is smurfs are more prevelant. And I think people smurf for same reasons as some people cheat. Eventually I cheated. At first I definitely focused mainly fighting cheaters, just tried to ruin their fun, then it went to ruining fun for players who talk shit. I don't see point of cheating against regular nice players personally, I don't think its fun for long periods of time but I know most cheaters do that for years. I also don't find smurfing fun.

i would like to compare the number of downloads you have to the overall number of people who have played on any servers. it would probably be mind boggling and you are just one developer. guys like you probably realize that at least 1 in 5 players is cheating in any given game certainly. that means in a 10 person game at a minimum 2 people are hacking... they are not necessarily the top fraggers. if you are obvious you will lose your skins and no one wants that. the funny thing is that because the rage hacking problem is mostly gone people never report to overwatch anymore. of the overwatch games i have seen i think that most of them had some sort of assistance. but maybe i voted to convict 5 people of all the overwatch games. sometimes peopel are just having a good day. some times you spam through a smoke and get a lucky headshot. i know it is possible. me personally i have never cheated I really don't have a reason to. i think the higher ranks have the most cheating along with the lowest ranks. people grinding it out in gold nova 3 for 3 years probably are not cheating but they come across many that are.

  • @Kennedy00Louis
    @Kennedy00Louis Před rokem +3

Here is a list of all the reasons I can think of for someone cheating, and what I think goes through their heads when cheating.
    1. Trolling, to the level of simply enjoying being an asshole.
The blatant cheaters who don't care about being caught, they just ruin people's games for satisfaction.
The kind of guy who would teleport you around the map in GTA and kill you just to make you feel miserable.
    2. Ego?
Idk the exact word I'm looking for, but what I mean is like, someone who cheats to feel superior than others, like a "haha I'm better than you" kind of fella, perhaps someone very narcissistic is likely to cheat for these reasons, idk, I'm no psychiatrist.
But I expect these cheaters to be the ones who get most mad when you beat them cuz you're taking their need for control away from them, and they get all like "wait no, that wasn't supposed to happen".
    3. Rage, like the video mentions, can also be a motive. They keep losing and instead of accepting and improving their skills they get revenge through cheating, they're the "If I can't have fun, no one will" kind of person, and they are probably going to become the second kind of cheater I've described, and get mad when some skilled af dude takes their control away from them, reminding them how they didn't get any better at the game and they actually suck.
Both 2nd and 3rd can probably be generalized in ego as their motive, for some fucking reason their brain needs the dopamine of being the top frag of the match, this and the 1st kind of cheaters are the most immature of all probably.
    4. Payback? Some sort of justice?
They probably were once a legit player, who got mad that people were cheating at the game, so they cheat back to make them taste the same poison, to beat the cheaters in their own game.
It's at least a more "respectable" kind of cheating, I don't support it or anything, but I can't deny that It's rooted in the competitive desire to play a fair game, like "Oh so you're not gonna play fair? You cheating huh? Fine. **turns on cheats** Now it's a fair fight".
If pro players beating cheaters are heroes, then cheaters beating cheaters are like anti-heroes.
The motives don't justify the means, it's still wrong, but at the very least they don't want to ruin the fun of other legit players, unfortunately they are only making the problem worse since cheaters are likely gonna cheat even more in return.
    5. Money. Like the video says, not much to say about it. Dude is trying to make some quick money, not much different from literally stealing money, since the tournament prize would have belonged to someone who deserved it and they took that away from them. And it's not the "I know this it's wrong but I need this to survive" kind of stealing, it's the materialistic greed kind of steal.
    6. Shortcuts.
More common in speedrunning or rythm games I'd say. There are fewer of these cheaters compared to others since it (sometimes, not always) requires them to already be good at the game before cheating.
These are the kinds of people who set world records or are the first to beat some insane challenge, are already pro players, and they cheat just to get world records/accomplishments faster and accumulate records.
Like Riolu, who was a really good Track Mania speedrunner, and was legit skilled at the game, but had a shit load of records that were faked. Or SpaceUK who at first was a legit Geometry Dash player but at some point started faking all of his accomplishments.
Idk what causes these players to decide to cheat, well obviously they are doing it to not have to grind some hard af level or run, but the root of the problem is unknowable to me. Perhaps they want to be seen as the absolute best, like a narcissistic desire for admiration? SpaceUK for example was considered the best player by the GD community, and faked being a legit player even to his closest friends, betraying basically everyone's trust, from fans to even other pro players who respected him as a fellow pro/friend.
If you know any other kind of cheater feel free to add to the list, or not.
I just wrote this for science :)

Personally, only ban is not enough because Streisand effect, things like equality scale, better matchmaking, better community guideline, better communications, and more learning opportunities are keywords to prevent cheater in the long-run.

Last night I was in a comp game and the other team had a player with 0/0/10. Our match was SO laggy despite all of us having peak ping of 30ms. As soon as one of our team members made an entry to a site, we all started to rubberband and then we're dead.
As someone who spends thousands on skins, case keys and intern steam market fees. I truely hope that CS2 squashes cheating with its mega VAC live claims. If not, I think we will have another WZ issue on our hands. I dont invest into skins to log into CS because its a 3D art gallery, I log in for 3 things:
1: I love the naturally competitive aspect of CS and its high skill ceiling.

There is one solution and one solution only to this: You verify your identity using your full name and passport and you get to play with other people who are also verified. If you get caught cheating verified, you get a 3 or 5 (or something) year ban from playing the game (and potentially other games in the same verification system). This makes it much more high-risk and a lot more difficult to circumvent once caught. Is it a bit dystopian? Sure, but I think it's reasonable enough for this situation as it's never going to be solved with just anticheats if people can just create a new account and start over immediately. Also; if you cheat you're a pathetic excuse for a human.

I cheated in Point Blank about 10 years ago when I was a young teenager and I can say, "cheaters cheat because of other cheaters" is indeed bullshit.
Firstly the game would have to be insanely riddled with cheaters in order to make that excuse work. Like at least >50% of the playerbase, and at that point you can just not play the game. It is an excuse to gather sympathy that is simply false.
The reason I did it and the reason I believe most do it is simply ego. You want to feel like one of those protagonists of wish-fulfillment anime that has some unique power that no one else has or some shit like that.
You want to be better or have some sort of power over people. I would usually very slightly cheat as to not ruin it for everyone, rarely toggling aimbot and usually only sticking to walling.
But it was satisfying to know that in EVERY enemy trash-talking situation, you had the power to just toggle and absolutely embarrass whoever was being an ass and literally never feel defeated. Sticking it to toxic players was my biggest catharsis, but I also won't try to gather sympathy and admit that I also did very much wanted that power trip over normal players even if just slight.
I would never full rage hack when facing a toxic enemy because people accept their defeat after faced with that. Instead, I'd ramp up my cheats just enough to make it believable I was just better after the trash talk, because that's what made them livid and what I was after. I would do my best to make them feel like they have hope for victory only to crush it.
I felt good after teammates praised me for my "gamesense" after I comm'd their positions I knew only because of wall hacking.
I think that exact power trip is what caters to cheaters, ultimately it stems from not only immaturity but inferiority complex.
Btw I was 13 when I did this, now 23, haven't cheated in any game since except poker lmao so don't come after me, just tryna shed some light from my perspective as someone who cheated in fps, I also apologize for any possible English mistakes

As someone who has considered getting cheats (never did it though, mostly because I don't want to lose my account), I will say that at least at the higher levels, people might just want to cheat because they want just that *slight* edge. Like, I was never going to aimbot. Cause i don't need it. But the major factor that made me consider it is that i know it would be possible to have cheats that highlight someone only when they are actually on your screen. And as someone who often loses a fight purely because I have trouble distinguishing people from the background sometimes, that's very tempting.

There are no excuse for cheating... That does gain unfair advantage somewhat in an online game (you could cheat on a single player but once you show it up to the world and tell me that that's legit, then gotta feel sorry for you and will wait for the "Im sorry, I won't cheat again" if you get caught)
It really won't make you good at the game, because you will heavily rely on it esp if the enemy gets better as you climb, And they'll be delusional that those cheats are their legit skills, they would even get angrier if they got beaten by a better non-cheater player whining that it's unfair etc etc.

The worst thing about cheating is the psychological impact on the playerbase. It creates an atmosphere of paranoia and INNOCENT good players get accused of cheating.
If you are not a well-established LAN celebrity, but you are good at the game - you WILL 100% get hackusations thrown at you.
Look at Ropz, he was an unknown name and a great talent. He was accused of cheating BY EVEN PROS just because no one knew him. He had to participate in LAN to prove he's legit.
This paranoia is annoying and even ruins your motivation to keep playing. If you're not a streamer or a LAN pro, you're fucked and everyone thinks you cheat.
Thanks a lot cheaters, you're the reason why legit competitive players get fucked over.
