Brant Pitre - my recent understanding is that the mystery of the 4 days ("because he loved them so much he waited a few days before going to see them" ) is because the raising of Lazarus was to be the fourth Messianic Miracle that Jesus would perform. Of all the miracles Jesus is recorded as performing: four were regarded as Messianic Miracles: (Mute demonic possession; Blind fom birth; Leprosy by touch; and ressurection after 4 days).
In first century Judaism - once a body had been dead longer than 3 days, the soul was regarded to have 'left' it fully and irreversbly. Up to three days after death a 'raising of the dead' was possible for some healers and possibly for some Pharisees and Sadduccees. But after 3 days the soul had become irreversibly withdrawn from the body, and the body had become unrecognizable to the soul. So, in those days and in that culture, under rabbinic understanding, the only entity that could raise someone from the dead after 4 days was either God Himself, or the Messiah. Therefore Jesus used this miracle and His friends to further announce Himself as the Messiah.
If this is the case the Gospel might be interpreted:
Jesus knew He would be raising Lazarus from the dead but because He loved Lazarus so much He chose to wait until the fourth day so He could demonstrate His own Messianic status on someone He loved dearly.
I also love that in John 11:4 is the lovelier time that Jesus announces His status as Son of God: " When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby."
I read that as Jesus Himself calling Himself, directly, the Son of God.
Brant Pitre, I'd be delighted to hear your comments on this interpretation of the raising of Lazarus after 4 days.

@@cherryheart3 actually No. He wept because he was sympathetic.
Why would he cry that they do not believe. When literally 6 VERSES EARLIER MARTHA JUST SAID SHE BELIEVED JESUS IS THE MESSIAH, THE SON OF GOD, WHO IS TO COME INTO THE WORLD.

    • @cherryheart3
      @cherryheart3 Před 3 lety +1

@@takmaps Jesus showed me the scripture and the understanding. He knew Lazarus was going to die 4 days ago and the bible said he purposely did not go right away so that God can be manifested. He did not cry then. JOHN 11:33 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled. He was troubled not crying. He groaned in the spirit because of their crying and he wanted them to just have faith. Vs. 35 Jesus wept because of their unbelief. The Jews said oh how he loved Lazarus. They thought this was because Jesus was crying. Jesus loved Lazarus, but he wasn't sad because he knew he was going to raise him up. Why would he cry. Ok lets continue. The Jews then said couldn't this man cause him not to die if he opened the blinded eyes? Vs. 38 said, Jesus therefore groan in himself (making a small noise). Groan not cry two times now groaning. He was disappointed. Jesus said Iam the ressurrection and the life and he that believeth in me shall live. When Martha said by now Lazarus stink Jesus said, SAID I NOT TO THEE THAT IF THOU WOULD BELIEVE that thou shall see the glory of God? This was to manifest God's work. He also said to God Father I thank thee that thou has heard me and I KNEW that thou hear me always, BUT BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE WHICH stand by I said Lazarus was dead that they MAY BELIEVE that thou has sent me. Jesus wept again also in Luke 19:41 And when he was come near to Jerusalem (before he even had contact with anyone in Jerusalem) he look over the city and wept saying IF ONLY THOU HAD KNOWN THE THINGS THAT BELONG UNTO THY PEACE, but now they are hid from thine eyes. (Even the belief). He had problem with their unbelief at others saying If thou can just have faith things will happen. He marveled because after he told Martha more than once to have faith and believe and seeing the others cry he cried himself groaning in the spirit and was troubled. I had to explain this in detail for you to see. Yes he has compassion on people because he is moved by people, but when he make a commandment or statement to believe and they don't believe it bothers him. When there was some who did believe he said great is thy faith, or marveled at their faith, or saying I haven't found no greater faith in all Israel. Only one or two out of the whole city Jesus said he found no greater faith then these. So this makes him sad.

This story gives a glimmer of hope to those who experienced suicide of a friend or loved one. When Jesus is asked "what can you do he is already dead....' means (to me) it is not frivolous or hopeless to pray for the salvation of someone who has already committed suicide. It does mean that the hope, faith and prayers of those still alive are needed even more if that person is to have any hope, slim as it may be, to still be saved even through this grave sin. It may be impossible for man but not for God.

I think what is also very important here, is what Jesus said about Himself. Note that He did not say: "I can resurect someone (given certain conditions are met)". Instead He goes on to say: "I AM the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?". Why is it so important? To me it means that Jesus offer of Salvation is unconditional. Nobody stays dead when the Resurrection walks in. Accepting Jesus as a life a resurrection means that it is offered to us "automatically". He doesn't make any additional claims, like "well, I will consider resurrecting you, provided...". No. He is very clear that He is the resurrection and the life, and so if you let him into your heart, you let the eternal life in.

I believe he wept for Lazarus losing his way after being taught. He said prior people who walk in darkness lose there way. I believe Lazarus was morally dead when Jesus came back to bring him back from that. This would explain to me that he was sad because the word had not taken root so he wept. When he called him out Lazarus was bound hand and foot. It's not common practice to do that to a dead man is it? God bless

The death of Lazarus is a foreshadow of the death of the ways of the flesh which must occur before the resurrection of the new man in Christ can take place for if any man be in Christ, the body is dead because of sin but the spirit is alive because of righteousness (Rom 8:10). Jesus may have wept because of the lack of faith of those closest to him displayed at the passing of Lazarus.

@Skelley : Is Luke 23:43 nonsense? Why? Let us see what it says.
(Luke 23:43) And he said to him: “Truly I tell you today, you will be with me in Paradise.”
Where did Jesus end up in when he died?
He ended up in hell (the grave) - Acts 2:27.
Where was Jesus a few days later after God resurrected him? On earth.
Was and is the earth any paradise? No!
      So what did Jesus mean?
When that man died, he CEASED TO EXIST as God had decreed at Genesis 3:19.
There logically, cannot be any time consciousness for the dead.
The next time that man opens his eyes it will be when he is resurrected back on earth during Jesus' 1,000 year rule of this earth (Acts 24:15, John 11:24).
To him, it will be like a few moments ago that Jesus made that promise to him.
(Psalm 146:3, 4) Do not put your trust in princes Nor in a son of man, who cannot bring salvation. 4 His spirit goes out, HE RETURNS TO THE GROUND; On THAT VERY DAY his thoughts PERISH.
      Basically his mind stops working.
People who cease to exist cannot logically think.
      I trust this helps.

Jesus wept because he was human as well as God . He felt the pain of the loss of a friend shared by everyone around him.
