DAREDEVILS AGAINST GIANTS: A HISTORIC SURF SESSION AT NAZARÉ
On February 24th, 2024, the quaint seaside town of Nazaré, Portugal, turned into an amphitheater for one of the most thrilling and treacherous displays of big wave surfing the world has ever seen. As a nasty storm unleashed its fury on the coast, it brought with it monstrous waves, challenging even the bravest of souls. Only four intrepid surfers-Sebastian Steudtner, Lucas "Chumbo" Chianca, Kalani Lattanzi, and Gabriel Sampaio-dared to face the ocean's raw power.

In conditions that were far beyond extreme, with winds howling and waves reaching heights that defy imagination, these warriors rode the unrideable. Their performance was not just about surfing; it was a battle against nature, pushing the limits of what is humanly possible.

The storm's impact made even spectating a challenge, with the ferocious wind and spray making it hard for the dedicated crowd that gathered to watch. But the spirit of adventure and the love for the sport transcended nature's obstacles, uniting everyone present in awe and admiration.

Did we witness history? A new world record perhaps? While that remains to be confirmed, one thing is clear: February 24th, 2024, will be etched in the annals of surfing history as a day of monumental bravery and sheer force of will. My son and I where there words can’t describe the excitement. The wind was so strong it made the conditions even more difficult. Not to mention the rain coming and going through out the day. Big thank you to the Portuguese photographers on the cliff that made me feel welcome.

I was also there. I was the guy in the red hat and dark blue jacket.
No wind and big wave is the best conditions. When its all windy and choppy like this its especially difficult and dangerous for surfers and not much fun. They are just trying to stay in front of the curl so as to survive. and stay alive😳

Having been on and in the ocean my entire life, the thing that really gets me other than the enormous size of the waves is the other conditions making it difficult: cross chop, reflected waves causing weird peakiness, and insane wind! Amazing these athletes can do this. Hopefully will get to see in person sometime soon!

you have to be fearless to surf nazare when it's big with nasty conditions. hurray for those dudes. Imagine getting buried, and pounded hard by that viscous white water, It would have to be brutal.
No doubt. Every cubic meter of that water weighs 22 hundred pounds and there's a S**T load of cubic meters in every one of those waves.

I was gratified at the skill level out there, I was thrilled to be only watching the upside of danger. When I saw the guy surf through whitewater out of necessity, I had to wonder how dense that white water might be, or how fast you need to be going to where that isn't a concern.

These waves are on such another level it makes me look away at times anyone who bodyboards or surfs understand the power of the sea, but this.... it's just so off the chart crazy, it's hard to comprehend the amount of power on display.
That's true, you can really feel it watching from the cliff, but we can say that there's nothing like being inside the sea feeling the real power of it! Really insane 😊⚡️

On a freighter from Casablanca to Oporto we transited the swells that come ashore at Nazarre. Only the top and funnel were visible, at times, of another large ship headed south, about a mile off starboard.

Whoa! Aside from these being violent waves, simultaneously cresting in different directions, it looks there are near hurricane force winds.
Yes, the wind was really strong, this day was during a really big storm here in Nazaré, but the surfers and their team managed to get there!

In the late 90's, early 2000's I crewed on an NHRA Niro Funny Car. It was during that time when I really came to understand addiction. When our owner/driver would get out of the car at the big end his eyes would be lit up like there was a100W bulb in his skull. Adrenaline! The most addictive substance on earth. We are now witnessing from the safety of our home offices that addiction on our screens. When the need to feel that adrenaline rush overrides the fear of death that person should be in rehab. Riding big waves is not about the money, fame or feeling of personal accomplishment. It is addiction to adrenaline.

Amazing surf, but to me not a world record. I think waves should have to fully break or crumble from top to bottom to be considered, most of these didnt and dont even finish breaking. When you look at the actual Guiness wave it to me is significantly larger. Still an absolutely amazing set that I wouldn't dare go ride lol.

The wave at, 5:27. comes together as the surfer exiting at the top. The surfer goes through it like it is a tube prism, 5:41- 5:42 I have never seen a wave, or a surfer do that before. Is there a surfing vocabulary word for it?
