    Nice comparison, but test is wrong. Boss pedals does not have true bypass. When pedal is off, it affects output tone due to buffer. Change order of pedals and you will get very different results.

    • @markferguson3745
      @markferguson3745 Před 6 měsíci +1

      When you stack buffered pedals, it's always going to have a noticeable tonal impact.Many don't seem to realize it's the buffer that they are responding to, - which I've long thought accounted for the initial popularity of the Klon ,or the Boss tuner.

      It's easy to get lost in option paralysis, but both the SD1 and the BD 2 are always solid Drive options.Hard to beat.
      The SD reminds me a lot of the Plumes( no diode) , and there are a few builders that have gone after the BD 2 magic, including Big Sound /Small Sound with the Mini, or in a more round about way, Poison Noises with The Crook.
      You can spend a lot of time with many ultimately similar Drive pedals, but the rest of your choices, - amp and speakers , pickups, - are going to have a greater impact on your overall sound.
      The SD is your basic asymmetrical clipping topology.

    People mention the older sounding warmer. The also mention the volume is lower and they turn it up. Anyone ever think the older unit can be made brighter by a small adjust to the tone control? Also the newer unit can be warmer by yes, adjusting the tone control.

    • @MrAngryTwinkie
      @MrAngryTwinkie Před rokem +3

      They adjusted with their eyes instead of their ears, so they are not factoring in component variance across the pedal.

    If you want to be able to service your Sd-1, then you need a Mij or Mit (not for sure about the later Mit). The current MiChina Sd-1's are micro circuit looking......would be very hard to mod or service.

    Very little difference and all sound good in standard mode and you can pick an old one up so cheap now it wouldn’t matter to myself, yes the Waza craft sounds thicker & bigger in custom mode, and so it should for the extra money you pay, to be honest I’m pretty tight fisted and wouldn’t get hung up on the subtle differences, I love my old SD1 and will stick with it. Thanks for the insightful video guys.

      Yeah it’s funny how most of us had an old cheap Boss pedal when we first started playing guitar...and then we thought all the boutique stuff is way better...only to find out that the old cheap boss stuff is actually pretty good!

    • @Paul_Lenard_Ewing

      @@TSFAHTPS The problem I have is that 98% of lower gain pedals are virtually Tube Screamers and use symmetrical distortion which is all even order harmonics. It is ...and sounds artificial. If a ts is used traditionally by overloading the input and distorting a tube amp the asymmetrical harmonics produced by the amp hide that artificial sound. BUT in a modern set up with multiple pedals one has to on a practical level run all your drives at unity gain. There are many self contained Amp-in-a Box pedals that will do medium to high gain very well quite simply as they take care of both an amps pre and it's power amp distortion in the box. But low gain asymmetrical pedal are few and far between. What there are and I found seem to all have a problem with small drop outs of their harmonic content. For example you play a chord and listen to it over give or take 2 bars at a slow or even medium tempo and you can hear it. Or if you change the dynamics with how harder or softer you play. What should happen are the harmonics rising and falling smoothly not erratically. Even the stupidly pricey MIJ gourmet pedals have this erratic thing going on. Brian Wampler did a video with all the versions of Boss OD's together and the DS-1 did not seem to have this problem neither could I detect on this video. He said himself it was his fave because it was so smooth but did not explain why. I think he knows why but he does not like to get too tech with his subscribers.
      Sarno Music Solutions Earth Drive is the very best I've found. BUT it is a very full and warm sound and I need a second pedal that has some spike to it and the DS-1 has that aggression. I know of a few pedals that I have heard recently that also are good but I found out they tricked out DS-1's. Hence why not just use the Boss?

  • @MrAnders1976
    @MrAnders1976 Před 3 lety +6

    the custom mode to me on the waza craft makes the Waza more suitable as a stand alone pedal,, you can have the tone up at 2 oclock, and the custom mode adds the bass that the standard mode lacks when tone is up above 12. With the stock sd1 I find that if you put the tone knob at 10 oclock is has the low end I need but lacks top end and cut, ,, if you put up the tone up at 1 oclock you lack low end or the lowest part of the midrange. THis is why I find the stock sd1 works best as a booster in front of full range overdriven amp or pedal with the gain knob not set higher than 11 oclock..

    Verdict.....hardly anything between them for me. The Waza in custom mode sounds less bright to me, hardly justifies the increased price tag as I could probably EQ the difference with a GE-7. £50 well spent for a bog standard SD-1 brand new
    There's also the black anniversary one to consider as well

  • @willacewallace5905

    Difference lies in the circuit board type and components used. The new units use a very small printed board with micro comments. The old units use an actual fiberglass board with point to point soldered components.
    I have both. Hands down the older units kick. That's with settings matched comparison, the older units are much warmer sounding. Use mine as a boost.

    The MIJ sounds a bit woolier, and the MIT/Waza are tighter or more focused. I've got a newer surface mount MIT, and I would be interested to see if there's a difference between that and the through hole MIT as well. I like it stock, but originally when I realized JB sold them for 50-60 bucks, I was aiming to buy a few and mod them, only to realise the new ones are alot harder to mod!
