Long take-off, short landing with no weapons. They always cut the take-off roll so you can't actually see how long it takes. This was exposed in Finland when the Finns just let the cameras roll without cuts or edits.

@@LRRPFco52 There is plenty of footage from airshows that proofs it. There is videos from the UK where F-18, F-16 & Gripen goes in and lands and take off after each other and the Gripen clearly was the shortest in each one.

@@zoom5024 Finland tested all this. You can watch F/A-18Cs in mil power taking off in shorter distance than 3 Gripen C/Ds, who were lightly loaded with EFTs and missiles. Any of the US teen fighters will leap off the runway way before a Gripen. The only way to get the Gripen down in take-off roll is to empty as much fuel as possible from it, strip it of any stores, and do it on a really cold day. Otherwise, its take-off performance is embarrassingly-anemic. (Me: Been around this business since the 1970s, decades of which were spent at the USAF Flight Test Center, so I’ve seen countless fighters take off and land over the past 50 years.)

Sweden may be the most associated country with road operations, because of jets made specifically to do it, but in the Cold War they were hardly the only ones. Several European countries did it, in both sides of the curtain. There is a video in YT of MiG-21s from some Warsaw Pact AF doing it on a grass field.

@@magoid Yes but only Sweden and Finland had ALL their operations from road bases during war or in case of hightened alert.
Not only the air forces of Sweden and Finland did this but also all other of their military units were dispersed in case of war or hightened alert.
Every unit was supposed to operate as guerilla units.
Strike where it hurt the enemy the most and then quickly disperse and hide from enemies sight.
The tactic wasn't meant to win the war but rather hurt the enemy as much as possible and above all, last as long as possible and let the enemy know that they could not take the whole country by a few strikes.
It was meant to cost the enemy as much as possible.

I wish there was a way to get a few dozen of these to the Ukrainians. This would be the perfect combat aircraft for the situation they are dealing with right now. It is high tech enough to compete with aircraft such as the Su-30 and Su-35. But is also cheap, doesn't require as much maintenance as other fighters and can operate from small air strips or even highways.

This is one of the operational advantages that characterize the Jas 39 and historically , because of the Cold War circumstance and the possibility of Sweden facing a total Bolshevik military invasion or the possibility of Sweden turning into a part of the nuclear war exchange in western europe theater of operations, the Swedish combat aircraft came with this specification as standard operational requirement .
However, the DPRK AF conducted similar exercises on landing and taking off the heavier platforms mig 21- mig 29 as part of their AF operational tendency to utilize the public roads as temporary mobile air bases during the total war with DY united states in case the needs for emergency landing Or that the DY americans war machine succeed in destroying , overwhelming or disrupting the work of their air bases ,
in addition to the fact that the Chinese and Bolshevik combat aircrafts come standard with the capabilities of using and being operated from unpaved runways at least to give their front line combat aircrafts the capabilities to keep pace with the rapid advancement or the maneuver of the armored and motorized formations on the ground .
However, this is an advantage that the other Western combat aircrafts do not possess, coupled with Jas39 simplicity to be service and maintained and its requirement for small service team of 5 persons lead by a single technician to service and prepare the Jas 39 during the intensive combat environment , So the Jas-39 remains superior to its Western counterparts in terms of its operational flexibility .
But the Jas39 comes with very an unrealistic price for its :
1-category as light combat aircraft ( LCA ) sharing this class with CAC/PAC JF-17 Thunder and Indian Tejas .
2- characteristics and technical specifications ,
3-the structure flexibility for future expansion and growth without major redesigning , or how scalable the platform to host new hardware .
4- what it can offer on the modern battlefield ,
In the Light combat aircrafts (LCA) category there are Indian Tejas at about a third of the Jas39 price ( the 75 million DY american dollar price per tejas mk1A / mk2 Covering the costs of the long research and development stages of the platform in its two generations mk1 / mk2 , In addition to covering the production costs which include for example: the materials from which the structure is made especially especially the composite materials which make more than 75% of the materials used to construct the structure , components and devices , working hours for technician teams and workers..... etc. without ignoring the possibilities of lacking transparency between the parties involved in the project , but the indian army sites have another views droping the price to around 60 million DY americans dollar per unite and considering it very reasonable price in comparison with the very high prices the DY americans and swedish aviation manufacturers are offering India for the F21 / Jas39 platforms , and defending the awarded contract to HAL by saying that : the Indian Tejas still cheaper by 50% than the DY american F21 and about 30% than the swedish Jas39 and the full amount will be spend it inside India , Otherwise the Tejas mk1 still presented for domestic and export at 26 million DY american dollar per unit , although most of its components were locally develop while the upgrading program to the mk2 standard were conducted utilizing foreign technologies which are generally speaking off the shelf components and offered at much cheaper prices than financial resources dedicated for developing new technology from scratch ) .
In the same time the design of Indian Tejas makes it a platform that can be scalable over the time , so that the technological and technical advantages and qualities that currently enjoys by the Jas39 will fade away over the time , for example the Wide Area Display (WAD) used by swedish platform Jas39 is the same as that used on Indian Tejas mk2 and perhaps from the same supplier .
However, the Jas39 outperforms its Indian counterparts with the stability and expertise of industrial infrastructure, especially the aerospace industries and its complementary subsidiary industries, so SAAB can meet the commitments of construction and delivery rates steadily and spending time and resources on expanding the capabilities and roles of its platform by further developing the structure the hardware , software and other components of the aircrafts , On the hand the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) still struggling to organize the work of production lines and the indian Tejas comes with continuous delays .
In my opinion after excluding the geopolitical considerations, the Chinese J10 family and bolsheviks mig35 a much better platforms in all aspects that play a major roles in enhancing the survivability and improving combat characteristics of the combat aircrafts , Beside both platforms situated in higher category as the medium weight multi role combat aircrafts which hinder any possible sale of those Chinese and Bolsheviks combat aircrafts to some parts of the world especially to the western hemisphere ( With the exception of Finland, which acquired during the Cold War MiG-21 and Mi-8 helicopters beside other weapon systems including air defence systems , radar systems ...etc , and the Nokia Corporation for Communications and Micro-Technology was one of the windows of the Bolshevik military-industrial complex and with it the Bolshevik war machine on the Western technology, it is strange that Sukhoi did not try to offer Su-35 on the Finish competition to replace the F/A-18 fighters ) .
And in the same time with the larger and heavier platform comes standard extra capabilities like enhanced : flying characteristic , combat capabilities and potentials growth and expanding . and both platforms offered for between 30 - 35 milion DY american dollar when the swedish platform Jas39 are presented for 80 million DY americans dollar , which is a price close to the bolsheviks Su-35 aircraft which is real air superiority platform with great deep strike capabilities , make it a very flexible multi-roles platform comes and due to its large size comes with great potentials for future expansion and growth .
While the limited technological advantages the Jas 39 possesses at this time for example : active & passive awareness systems , unified electronic warfare suits, and sensor fusion ....etc will be diminish over time when the Chinese and bolsheviks will develop their technologies or in near future when they will finish deploying their 5th gen combat aircrafts saturation their frontline squadrons with the stealthy combat aircrafts they will turn their attention to integrate those new technologies developed for the 5th gen platforms onboard existing ( 4 plus and 4 plus plus ) platforms as the 5th gen combat aircrafts were mostly stealthy platforms described as high-end niche quality platforms .
This is why I do not think that it will be the workhorse of the air forces in both countries in times of peace , and it will be used economically , with a focus in traditional employment roles on conducting high-value tasks and duties , in addition to its use in combat simulation exercises , training , developing the employment principles and doctrine of the stealth aircrafts , same things for the operational preferences which is to large extent already a standard requirements in those Chinese and Bolsheviks platforms ...
However for the time being and in comparison with the DY americans offered platforms I strongly believe the Jas 39 still suiting the defensive needs of the countries surrounding russia in addition to the countries of east and central europe especially when all those countries share with sweden the same strategic defense needs and requirements .
Worth noting here that the south korean future fighter aircraft KAI KF-21 Boramae/Fighting Hawk (formerly known as KF-X) with its twin engines , very modern & stealthy design , very reasonable price , superior flying characteristics and advanced combat capabilities , will give the Jas 39 and the DY americans F16/21 and F/A 18 super hornet with its conventional designing very difficult time especially when it's being offered with transferring technologies and local manufacturing ,and the south korean platform with its open architect will be very scalable to accept third party hardwares , softwares and weapon systems .

Poland and other countries of the former Warsaw Pact continue to support the ancient Su-22 and MiG-29, despite the lack of original parts for repair, due to their undeniable combat effectiveness. While the much newer F-16s are in endless repairs ...
Russia, back in the early 90s, abandoned single-engine combat aircraft ... since the loss of a single engine is guaranteed to lead to the loss of an aircraft.
Now, however, the development of two alternative single-engine fighters is already underway. mainly for export, but also for Russia with the possibility of a manned and unmanned version, with artificial intelligence.
Although, in the USSR there were great single-engine fighters MiG-21 and MiG-23.
$ 60 million is extremely expensive for Gripen !!! For the Russian Aerospace Forces, even significantly large, twin-engine aircraft (Su-30SM, Su-34, Su-35, Su-57 - the fifth generation !!!) are cheaper! The price of western aircraft is dominated by the corruption component ... Therefore, with the military budget 13 times !!! less than that of the United States, "poor" Russia is capable of destroying all NATO countries in a day ....

I don't doubt that the SAF has done the drills in the winter conditions but I'm talking Artic. Being able to land the Grippen on a road or ice landing strip in the Artic winter is a big plus as long as the plane doesn't freeze on the ground. The small foot print of the ground crew means that we could have these landing strips all over the place. The USAF is testing this concept with F22s and F15s as I write this but they are still tied to a small number of airports.
