  • Another Mintrom Movies video on The Weeknd! The Weeknd’s Kiss Land is a pretty underrated album. But I just love Kiss Land and wanted make this The Weeknd Video Essay to explore why I think it’s misunderstood, hence the title Kiss Land - The Weeknd’s Misunderstood Masterpiece. Seriously, this album is a hidden gem and easily one of The Weeknd’s best in my humble opinion. I hope you guys enjoy the video, and I hope you all are doing well.

Like there have been albums that come close like Lorn's stuff but Kiss Land just has a rly specific sound which I just love. I also love the style of the album so much like green is my favourite colour and it's everywhere. And I love japanese aesthetics too it adds so much character to the album especially with Oxcy. Kiss Land was such a personal-feeling album. Up until After Hours, it felt like the only album that was a reflection of Trilogy as an evolution to studio album status and quality. Which makes sense, seeing as how it was his debut studio album. But it wasn't his commercial breakthrough, we wouldn't get that until Beauty Madness. He does say that Kiss Land is the only album he feels like he could make a sequel to. Am I the only one who feels like After Hours is kind of a spiritual successor?

Kiss Land is my favorite weeknd album besides Trilogy. In early 2013, I started listening to the weeknd heavily and listened to Trilogy as a whole for the first time and it was the best body of music I ever heard. It completely changed my life and helped me cope with a bad breakup with my HS sweetheart. I listened it everyday until Kiss Land came out and Kiss Land just blew me away. It was very lyrical, it was dark, it was deep and it was different. One of my biggest regrets in life is not going to the Kiss Land tour but I’ve been to every tour since. Kiss Land is my favorite studio album of his because it’s so raw and takes you to a different place. It’s not for everyone, you have to be in a certain frame of mind to really understand it and appreciate it. I love the weeknd and it’s bitter sweet that after Kiss Land he went commercial pop. I feel like if people appreciated what he did with KL more he would’ve continued with that sound. We still have elements of trilogy/KL weeknd in his new music but it’s not the same. I will never forget how Kiss Land made me feel in 2013 and beyond. All hail Kiss Land 🖤💚

House of balloons was the establishment of who The Weeknd is. Kiss land is the story of the tour life and a universe filled with horror. Beauty behind the madness blew Abel up with the hills, I can’t feel my face, in the night, etc… and established more about who he is.
Starboy is well about a Starboy. My Dear Melancholy is about him going threw a break up nothing new like Mintrom Movies said almost every Weeknd album (-Starboy) is about a break up or him losing something his faith etc…After hours is him trying to get the girl back but threw out the album he’s want’s her “Out of my dreams” and establishing more about who he is in this modern time. We’ll have to see what the next albums about when it comes out next year. Appreciate the video man kiss land is a good album but it was rushed and it disappeared out of people minds to fast.

Got into The Weeknd in 2015 like a lot of people. I didn’t really listen to anything outside of his mainstream at first but then I went back and listened to Trilogy and Kissland and both albums were amazing. The sounds, the lyrics, the atmosphere, everything about them were amazing. I’m glad I went back and listened to these albums as it made me appreciate The Weeknd as an artist even more.

Thank you so much for putting this together. Kiss Land is one of my all time favorite albums and it makes me happy when it gets the recognition it deserves.
This entire album is such an emotional, theatrical rollercoaster that stands completely on it’s own. No matter how much I’ve listened to it I STILL continue to find new layers and hidden meanings throughout it all.
It truly is the gift that keeps on giving.
Hearing Abels sheer emotions throughout After Hours (especially on Until I Bleed Out) put tears in my eyes. I’m sincerely hoping he will apply that same emotional vulnerability on his new album.
I think all the cards are in his favor for him to make an album that feels reminiscent of Kiss Land.
Fuck, I would love nothing more than that.

By far my favourite album by the weeknd.. trilogy is unmatched with the nostalgia it brings and how amazing it actually is especially when you put it all into perspective that he was so young when he made the mixtapes, practically homeless and unknown and made such a master piece in “house of balloons” but when it comes to straight album then kissland is on another level.. it’s got the production, the lyrics, the atmosphere and you can genuinely picture the whole album taking place as he sings it
