- The Velvet Empire: A tale of the French Empire, as told with Victoria 3.
In this run, we will use the Sphere of Influence mechanics to create an informal empire that seeks to build up not just French power and wealth, but also their status as the pre-eminent arbiter of culture.

My mod list is in my Discord server on the #victoria3 channel. If it was easier to do a Steam collection, I would have done one. :-) - Hry
I don't know if you need to know this but I'm so glad to see someone that won't just go on an unnecessary conquest spree
It's the main reason why I love the game! War is secondary in my games.
In 1990s there was a joke in Eastern Erope about emigrating to the USA to find work.
- What is "best job" in English?
- Asbest job.
At the time, many buildings in the USA were stripping Asbestos insulation and paid well for the work.
Wear enough protective gear, and it's rewarding work. Seriously. I think some of the best jobs are the dirtiest jobs.
Of course, "protective gear" wasn't much of a thing at the time. Thank goodness for OSHA.
@@ExpedientFalcon The problem with post-communist countries is, that anything that protects workers is considered evil and antifreedom.
Historically, in the 1830s France was already training Egypt's military and importing weapons. Mehmet Ali, who was the de-facto independent Ottoman viceroy in Egypt was well-liked in France because he was an overt fan of Napoleon's, and anyone who admires Napoleon is a person of fine taste in French eyes. French public opinion in the years up to 1848 was going through it's own "MAGA" (or MFGA) phase, where Napoleon's rule was idealised as a time with less corruption, clear national ideals and military glory.
Playing as Russia rn Britain and I have fought so many inconclusive wars that France was left alone to grow its GDP to more than Russia or Britain combined 😭
Peace is great for growth, for sure.
I would love watching a campaign with Italy!
It looks like Italy unifies regularly, and would be a fun one to try.
You are awesome sir! Love this video. I am using it to learn how to play the game.
Very glad to be able to help out!
This us the way I aspire to play Vic3 like
Thank you!
I'm looking forward to the America run, seeing the economic shenanigans you get up to in it.
Indeed. I plan that to be next.
Bonjour, nice another France enjoyer. I hope your wineyards will be profitable.
O mais oui! :-D
I love the way you play Victoria 3; its so enjoyable to watch.
Thank you very much, more to come!
Excited about this new series! Viva la France!
This is an exceptionally fun run, that's all the spoilers I'll have about the game that I've recorded thus far. :-)
I almost restarted because British started a play to transfer Liberia from me in just 8 years in. Noooooo my first block buddy 😭
1.7.4 I hear is supposed to fix that aggression. We shall see...
Happy to have found your channel!
Welcome aboard!
Fuck yeah! just bought Victoria 3 and found out about the whole investment thing. Your videos convinced me to buy it as you described a wonderful way to have an empire without having to conquer one
I dont have iron as netherlands but the Somali states have plenty!
and after being kicked out of Africa multiple times (I decided a war with brittain over the gold coast was reallllllly not worth it) investing in iron mines there to get the iron in my market seemed like a wonderful way to get it without having to make colonies and potentially pissing off the Brits or french.
The latest DLC/update has totally put the game into a zone where it needs to be. After this, I'll work on some mods for adding flavor in the Balkans and other areas.
Orleanism actually would be the best fit for the economic and trade policies you want Laissez-faire and Free Trade.
Historically, they were, along with the Bonapartistes. I'm taking a different tack, politically speaking. 😊
15:15 It would be cool if you turn Egypt into some kind of crown colony of France. Like how Victoria was empress of India, whoever rules over France could also be Sultan of Egypt
That would be more possible with a sovereign empire bloc, which allows members to become protectorates after 5 years. The other chance would be if there was a revolt and one side or the other in the revolt allowed a wargoal of making it a subject. I'm choosing to go the latter route.
Are sponsorships the law now? Every video I watch from anybody has them.
Because YT changed payouts and how it pushes videos, major creators making a living from YT are scrambling to keep their incomes together. At my level, it's more of a cargo cult kind of thing.😀 If I act like I am getting sponsors, they will maybe show up. Maybe not. Fun for me to act out, though!
I just love the vibe of your videos, keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words! If it's not fun, it's not worth doing!
Glad to see another France run! I hope you did some reading on the July Monarchy.
Oh I did, but I am also having to do lots of reading on the history of industrialization, fascinating stuff going on with that area in this run!
@@An_Economist_Plays I can recommend "The July Monarchy - A Political History of France" by H.A.C. Collingham. I think that's the go-to book for this specific period written in English. If you can give me references on the industrialisation in general, I'll be much obliged.
@frederickryeland313 "An Economic History of Nineteenth-Century Europe" by Berend and "A Velvet Empire" by David Todd.
Go to your ingame options and find the checkbox that makes notifications appear to the left of your right-hand UI.
Thank you for providing the numbering. ;)
It'll be a thing from now on, and thank you for suggesting it! We're always the better for it when we listen and make positive changes. :-)
@@An_Economist_Plays Thank you for not only accepting advice but also for implementing it. Our duty is to uplift one another.
Really excited for this one
It's a banger of a game so far!
Er, France only got into Morocco around the turn of the century.
True, but the AI will go for it if I don't get there first. Part of the historicity sacrificed for playability...
Greetings
So when are you're gonna turn Bonapartiste?
Also if you wanna play a culture focused game, i can recommend the Mod "Morgenröte" which includes many mechanics for that and making imo great use to the character system of Victoria 3 which can be lackluster at times.
I'll have to take a look at that separately, as I've got the mods locked in for this run. I'll have to play and film like mad for the next few days so I can finish it... and then start trying new mods! :-)
i played with your modlist, starting france and cannot get early rivalries on weak nations like you, do you know why ?
This one is different from the other series and when I did a do-over, I had the same situation. C'est la vie...
@@An_Economist_Plays this series is not using your new 1.7.5 modlist ? (i.e great revision mod is missing)
@@SuperDavidoux This one is using the 1.7.3 modlist, and then some issues happened which I explain in episode 6 at the end. 🙂
