Not gonna lie. One of the videos I most look forward to in a year.
Same
This is OUR Oscars!!!!!!!!!
Posiedon deserves tons of love/support for making a cheap, whacky bike like the Redwood. I wish Posiedon and State lots of success - we need some new blood in the bike industry.
I love my Redwood!! It’s a very capable bike, I ride my local mountain bike trails all of the time.
Fairdale should be included in the new blood category
I would watch the heck out of Russ going to a flea market / swap meet / going out of business sale and reviewing a couple of sub-$100 super-budget bikes and pretending they are gravel specific.
At 65, after beating myself up through dual military and law enforcement careers, and no longer able to “run the miles” as I did as a young pup, I’ve traded two legs for two wheels for cardio benefits. I bicycled quite a bit from the 70’s through to the late 80’s....so I continually am amazed at how far this industry has come! I much appreciate your videos. I now own a ti mountain bike I built for bikepacking-fly fishing trips, but now realize I may have been better off on a “gravel-type” bike. You provide an outstanding service.....”multiple laurels” to you!!!
The double laurels make my day every time I look at the Marin website. They actually put them on there, and it's just... perfect.
I bought my Sam Hillborne in 2009. I think that was the year it came out. Except for a few years of side-pull instead of canti/linear pull brakes, the design has stayed pretty much the same. Does that mean it is the most supple bike of the last 11 years?
On a different track I recently built up a Rivendell Roadini. It's a road bike but so comfortable and very lightweight. In the UK we don't really do gravel but we have thousands of miles of narrow potlholed lanes and the Roadini is strong and very subtle for this kind of cycling.
I only picked up on your channel a few months ago...I always love the mix of personality/humor/self awareness with actual niche knowledge that for some reason the industry monuments that maybe even make some similar bikes don't seem to have. Cheers. Also, just genuinely jealous of how many cool bikes you get to ride.
This is soo great to hear, my Redwood came in last week, haven't really ridden it as much due to the weather. This just makes my purchase even more justified, let's see how it will do on the streets of NYC and thank you to Luis for suggesting the correct size for me!!
I've been lusting after the Outback all year. Only thing holding me back is the color and the brake cable on top of the top tube. Glad to see the Outback recognized by "Most Supple Bike of the Year" as a great frame.
Love it! I think it's time for a review of the Priority Apollo. Belt drive, internally geared hub, that's something unique I'd like to hear more about.
I second this. The apollo really looks like an interesting option. Unfortunately (for me), it sounds like it can only clear a 47c tire. I live in a very sandy area and need more meat!
Ooooh fancy titles and all the stops for this video! Genuinely look forward to this video and it's always a real pleasure!!
I want one of each! Thanks for all the AWESOME reviews PLP!
Awesome, like always! Your winners remind me of the bikes by Fairlight Cycles, especially the Faran, both it and the Secan are hot at the moment both in the UK and here in Europe. Gosh, I do love my Secan. Darn shame you are not able to test ride them in the US. Keep it up, you guys rule!
Absolutely agree. Secan with 650b for Russ please
There's a lot of great bikes coming out of the UK right now, Ritchey, Mason, Kinesis and Fairlight are perfect examples. I'm from the U.S. and there's no way I could find a bike at my LBS for sub $2500USD made of Reynolds steel and spec'd with GRX 800 and Hope wheels for that price. I absolutely love my Faran 2.0, it's damn near future-proof with all the bottle/rack mounting points, ability for 650B or 700c and routing for dynamo lights.
clicking like before the video is even underway knowing I won't regret it!
One of best things to happen in 2020 end ❤️
I wasn't surprised that the Outback made your pick. I came so close to ordering one, but just like you I really wanted mounts for a front rack. I stumbled upon Fairlight Cycles in the UK known for their TCR winning Strael bicycle and ordered their updated Faran 2.0 bike. It's got mounts galore on their Reynolds steel frame/fork and large tire clearance on 650B or 700c wheels. Kind of a front load specific bike, but throw on some Panaracer 38 slicks and it feels like a road bike. I really wish you could review their bikes, but they produce in small batches and require a deposit months before they ship. Since they're direct to consumer in the UK, I'm sure getting a review sample would be difficult. I know you usually ride one size smaller than I do, but if you're ever back in Tucson, I'd be happy to lend you mine for as long as you like to review.
Cool to see a higher-end TI build on your list!
I bought the redwood and really hoped for it to be in the video! Now I feel justified in my purchase!! haha
Man, I thought the State Bicycles All road was gonna beat the Poseidon! Shocker of the year!!
It's a good bike. The gearing is just too high on it IMO.
@@PathLessPedaledTV Would you have chosen it if it came with a 38T (or smaller) chainring?
@@TimothyJamesOng prob not with the Poseidon in the running. The Poseidon is just the more interesting bike. The geo is really quirky and not something you see often in this price range.
I don't think it gets much better than a classically styled, steel bike with tons of clearance for big tires, quill stem, and lugs. While certainly not as spicy in the rear as the Sam, my Atlantis checks all the supple boxes for me.
I've heard if enough people(4-5) ask a company if you can review a bike they take it into more consideration. Maybe we can ask Norco, Linskey or Santa Cruz if they can send you a review bike. Cause the Stigmata looks fun.
The Stigmata is fun! I like it with 700x48 and 650bx2.1 equally. Rides so nice but lacks all of the mounts.
That Rivendell 👍
Oh wow it’s that time of the year already. Love these awards this year- great job Russ
Very cool there are so many great budget gravel bikes and glad PLP reviews them too. 🏆
Fantastic that two of my favorite bike brands split the top honors!!! 👏👏👏 Also, two of the most respected, old school camps out there. Nice one @pathlesspedaled
Great work Russ! Always love and appreciate your commentary! : )
Based on your general bike choices I’ve always thought it was too bad you never got a chance to review the 853 Kona Rove Ltd. (and the Sutra Ltd for that matter)
I would also add the Sutra ULTD to this. It reminds me of the Salsa Fargo.
I love my Sutra LTD. Can do bike touring with racks, bike packing going light, or road biking with 35c tires for long distance group rides with your buds. Versatile chameleon with room for 35c to I think 2.1” tires. I just picked up a second set of Hunt Alu wheels based on PLP review to put 45c gravel-specific tires and the stock wheels run 35 or 38c slicks for commuting. It feels like I have two bikes in one. Thanks Russ!
@@ChrisBrown-dz9sz I have the LTD also and believe it is probably one of the most versatile bike out there. Like you, I use mine for bike packing with 2.0 tires and love it.
My LBS had one in stock at one point and I missed a chance to take it for a ride. Huge regrets!
@@trevorsmith7045 Heh, I’ve been stacking LTDs. I’ve got the old Rove LTD (853), the Sutra LTD (which will take 2.3s) and the Zone LTD, which is likely not a bike that resonates here much ;-). This was not intentional by any means and they are all frame builds so they bear no relation to the stock bikes. Kona certainly has some compelling offerings that don’t break the bank.
I sorta expected the the Sam Hillborne to be the winner of this, the most coveted award in cycling. Initially, I thought of that as a bit of a cop out. But then it occurred to me that you spent your own money buying it. So, fair enough. I hope you are really enjoying it. But I am guessing it will see less use in the snows of Montana for the next few months.
Another awesome video thanks man I love my Poseidon Redwood
Off road wiil be great, how is the on road feel with them big tires?
Impressive picks!
Four of the bikes mentioned, I have recommended to friends looking to purchase, and one I've considered myself (the Otso)!
I was familiar with the Poseidon name, but not the Redwood bike, and just off of the short description. I had to go check it out! Great free advertising for the brands, and at the very least I hope they continue to send products your way to test and create content!
Great stuff russ! The otso waheela with the lauf as quoted by my buddy "whoa this thing feels like it's got full suspension " smooth riding for sure!
More laurels means more prestigious. Can’t argue with that! Thanks Russ!
Kona Libre carbon 650b = ♥️💥🔥 cool to see the AL on the list
Always appreciate your thoughtfulness and careful explanations. While I’m envious of all the bikes you get to ride, I recognize they come at great cost in your time and effort and I am glad you are willing to do it. I love the look and idea of the Sam Hillborne but I can’t find a reliable weight of it and you have artfully dodged that question twice already. I already own a heavy (30 lb) steel bike and am really looking for something sub 25 lb. Thanks again for great videos and good luck getting to and past that 100k subs level!
I haven’t weighed it and I don’t plan to. I actually don’t want to know or and have that take away from my enjoyment of the bike. It’s not a light bike. Definitely not sub 25lbs.
This was great! Helpful as I approach bike decision/buying mode.
Just ordered an outback. This makes me even more excited.
That’s awesome, Man! I love my Subaru.
@@stevencouncil1859 how dare you. You filthy man coming in here with these impeccable dad jokes. Not mad, I'm impressed
Ritchey has the best mass produced steel bikes. Congrats you’ll love it!!
@@Massproduce201 who has the best steel if price is no issue? Fairlight was seriously tempting.. my wallet couldn't justify it
What are your thoughts on Internal Geared Hubs with Carbon belt for Gravel.
My take would be, get out your hacksaw & a Ritchy coupler & Go For It.
Good choice on the Redwood! Mostly cause I own one. It's a keeper !
I gotta say, the GRX Space Horse is just amazing. I got mine about a month ago and have put 200+ miles on it so far. All it really lacks, as you stated in your review, is a better cassette. I was actually gonna grab a set of roadier wheels and keep the sunrace that comes with it for that and throw a shimano mtb cassette on the horizons.
It's a great allrounder bike.
Great presentation of some cool bikes. I have also enjoyed your gear reviews and general love of the non-competitive side of bicycling. I have come from the mountain bike side of things, but entered the gravel market this year. If you can get your hands on an OPEN Wide, and put some 650b wheels on it, you might find another carbon bike you enjoy. It answers that snappy, quick climbing need, but is very capable just about anywhere. OK, you won’t like the lack of rack mounts, but you can work around that.
Redwood is sold out in my size. You must have some influence on sales ! Nice !
Thanks, awesome video with a great line-up. I wish Poseidon had a 'selling/shipping point' from within Europe!
Guessed it on the Poseidon and the Riv. Great video, Russ!
Very cool, thanks for the reviews!
He'll yea, stoked on the winners
Riv Clem L for budget winner 2021.
I'm loving my new Ritchey Outback V2 and Shimano GRX Di2 groupset 👍
hey, great video! i was wondering what you thought of the priority apollo, or if you had a chance to ride it even. not a lot of gravel/touring bikes available with a belt drive, especially under $3k, and on paper it sounds pretty nice.
Would love to hear him review this next!
Great reviews as always.
Would love to see a black mountain MCD or Road + reviewed at some point. Especially because of the price point.
Yeah, have been trying to get a black mountain for years. Small company. Not enough spare frames for demos.
@@PathLessPedaledTV he's got a bunch more new frames coming into stock in November. Maybe you'll get lucky. Fingers crossed.
I'm sooooo tempted to grab a Riv SH frame next week... And funny that the Ritchey has tempted me, too, though they don't seem to be very available, atm.
My Redwood arrives next week.- Saw it first on your channel!
Surprised not to see some version of the Kona Rove in here. Too heavy? I have to ST and it ticks all the boxes for me. Plus, Ultraviolet! Color is a prime component of suppleness, right?
Didn't review a Rove this year.
Excellent analysis- per the norm
Thank you Russ for doing these videos. I'm going to buy my first gravel bike this year. Without being able to test ride bikes anymore I value your opinion. I'm 53 y/o and want a supple ride. I want to do 30-50 mile rides with a couple century rides per year. I live in Michigan with fairly flat terrain. I like to go fast when I can, not going bike packing anytime soon. I'm looking at the Surly MS, Kona Rove steel, and that Kona Libre w/ 650 b. I would really appreciate your advice. Thanks man.
Great review Russ.
Love it, super concise.
The Rivendale looks like it would be a good rando bike.
I used my Hillborne on a couple of 200km brevets this year, with 44mm Rene Herse tires I was basically riding on a cloud.
Great video! Glad Kona got in there- curious to know how the Libre beat the Rove DL though.
Sam Hillborne! Out of all your reviews, that's the one I wanted to ride most.
I am super torn between buying a Sam or the Crust Romanceur. It is definitely difficult without being able to test ride either of the bikes.
great picks with the riv and Poseidon.
Doing research for my first all rounder bike . Dont know what to pick and dont want to end up getting something I regret later down the road. So far the surly midnight special is calling my name. But looking forward to this video to either cement my opinion or open my eyes to something great !
You should also consider Bombtrack Hook EXT columbus steel.
@@jackben12 That's one of the bikes I was also considering. looking for something fast and fun like the MS. Since I live in the city but do plan to do gravel and bikepacking. In your opinion would the Bombtrack still fit the bill?
@@snowflakesuarez2656 yes, definitely as I’ve got one but the stock tires are on the heavy side for smooth road.
Another option is Fairlight Secan, I don’t own one but I’ve got Fairlight Strael which is very fast bike but can only fit up to 33c wide tires. Secan can fit wider tires similar to Hook EXT.
I've got MS when it got released few years back, and - imho - that's a truly all-road bike - not specifically gravel or aggressive road bike. It's a bike I used for daily commutes, a bike I took for relatively fast rides with friends like a single day Seattle to Portland (200+ miles) and for weekend explorations of back roads / forest roads / sometimes even singletracks.
I've done multiple upgrades over the time, and I would say it goes the best with good wheels and supple 42mm tires 👌
Way to stoke my bikelust! Salamat!
This is a great reviews and probably speaks clearly to someone familiar with the sport. As a newbie, I could use a layman explanation of what you mean by the "weird" frame design of the Poseidon Redwood. (I just bought a Poseidon X, which is probably similar). In other words, something like "Gravel bikes normally are.... but the Poseidon is..." as far as what it means to ride the bike (have to lean down more?). Thanks.
Gravel bikes are usually cross bikes but the Redwood is a mountain bike with drop bars
The Otso was a surprise I have been looking at that one but have not rode it yet would like to compare it to their titanium warakin. Thanks .
Awesome vid. Can you Rec a few solid steel gravel bikes at different price tiers, incl budget?
What would be a better bike, the Lynskey gr 300 or the Richey outback?
Sadly, the bike prices have gone up since this video. The Kona Libre is now over $2K.
Love the Otso love! I’d like to see you review the Warakin Ti
One thing you said that always sticks w me - perfect bikes are boring.
What size is your Rivendell?
Great job. Long live steel framesets!
Great video! Have you ever tried a Rocky Mountain Solo?
Rad. Looking forward to this one.
Don't think most of those bikes are available in the UK although not sure about the Kona but still interesting to see the bikes recommended. I feel a few more international models might help the channel. Truth be told here in the UK I'd probably not pay more than £1000 for a bike anyway which would exclude most of the models here.
Does anyone know if the Outback is, generally, any more brisk/quick than a Sam?
built a Bombtrack Hook EXT C last summer and the Otso Waheela C this summer and agree with you on the supple ride it has for carbon. spooky. looking to build an Outback now. curious which Otso tuning chip setting will help me climb better since i feel it climbs slow compared to the Hook.
How did you go with the Outback? How does it ride compared to the Otso Waheela C and Hook C? I've got a Ritchey Swiss Cross and I love it, easily my favorite bike in my stable, just looking for something with more tire clearance for multiday dirt rides and the Outback is right there at the top of my list.
Ritchey Outback for me! So when can I expect delivery?
Why didn't the Sam Hillborne win outright b/c it *can* support a front rack???
Russ, is choosing the Riv and the Ritchey your way of telling us you miss your old Salsa Vaya? Long chainstays, chill geo, baked in supple front end and room for, as you first proved (!) 650b x 48mm rubber ... sounds familiar!
I don’t know that I miss the Vaya specifically though it is a good bike. Just wanted a foil to the Bombora. It’s like Scotch. Tasting opposites highlight interesting notes you may have missed.
Hmmm interesting, idk next your you should do more videos for more categories (yeah an end of season thoughts/feelings/opinions). Gravel had been/is becoming so diverse with bikes that are aero (race), supple (casual), and are good all-a-rounders. Although, I know your not one to review bikes in the aero category; it's hard to fid objective and trusted opinions on the interwebs. Cheers!
Popped my corn and watched. ❤️🎉
Let's fucking goo
Would you please review the Kona Sutra and Trekking 520
I definitely have run a front rack on a carbon fork. you could probably do so pretty safely.
Every bike with a carbon fork that has come in for review I have asked the manufacturer if it is rated to use a platform rack. None have said yes. You can mount one. You probably won't die. But usually the official line is that it is not recommended.
If the retirement package works out I guess might be able to get something expensive like the Bearclaw but why bother? Poseiden has already done the job: new school geometry, bomb proof, huge clearances and bristling with mounts. Also sold as a frameset and they ship to Europe. Can spend the money saved on pork pies and beer. Job done.
The Poseidon is a great bike but I wouldn’t say that it is equal to the Bearclaw.
@@PathLessPedaledTV You've ridden both bikes so you know better than anyone but is the Bearclaw better to the tune of thousands of dollars when you're out on the trails? I guess that's always a very personal question.
@@weeringjohnny For me, yes. czcams.com/video/xzr6jhXy3KE/video.html
@@PathLessPedaledTV Thanks, Russ, I greatly value your opinion. Keep up the good work on my favourite CZcams channel!
Really impressed with what Kona has been doing the last few years. And that Ritchey looks amazing! That said, why only gravel bikes up for consideration? Rigid mountain bikes with even more tire clearance are also a popular supple category. (Or do you rank them separately?)
I’m a marginal mountain biker at best and don’t have enough data points to talk about mtbs.
Russ please review the Bombtrack Hook EXT! If yeah can :)
You have to try Marin Four Corners!
what are the shifters on the rivendell sam hillborne called?
If you can, give the Bilda Bike Civilderness a try. Great bike for the $$$.
You compare a lot of these bikes to the Warbird. Why isn't on the list?
There’s a drinking game around this subject: Anytime Russ mentions “Salsa” or “warbird” you gotta slam a warm coors.
@@Dustybutdigital haha tap the warm Rockies
I refer to it because it was the first officially coined gravel bike and lots of people have experience with it.
Hey Russ, I'm a similar size to you. Were you on the Small of Medium Outback? Love the channel - Thanks!
I rode the Small but think the M would be a better fit.
do you think a bike with quick release and disk brakes could have won the award or is it a bummer?
Do you anticipate reviewing the Fairlight Faran 2,0 in the not too distant future? Personally I'm super stoked, my frame is expected to ship next week, I don't think many people have ridden it yet. The budget lovers won't like it though, I paid 899 UK pounds for mine, I guess it translates to a similar figure in $$, for just a frame.
I can always ask but we are small potatoes.
You’re gonna love it!
No crust invasion lite whatsoever?? Isn't it more supple than bumbora? & considering that bike won last year.. This should have atleast be runner up, isn't it?
Is the biggest story of 2020 you changing your mind on long chainstays, then? 😁
I like to mix it up:)
PLP: "Most supple bike of the year award"
Me: riding alu frame alu fork gravel bike.
The Poseidon is Alu frame and fork.
