- What will we catch in our new Lobster pots? We love working a small number of lobster pots from our small family boat. Such a wonderful and rewarding experience that often brings delicious rewards. Hauling our lobster traps by hand makes it all the more worthwhile when you catch something to eat. Join me as I check out pots and talk you through the things we catch. Including conservation regulations that are in place in Cornwall.

I have no clue what he is saying but, I find his video's entertaining.
Haha. Thank you.
Your battle with the octopus cracked me up. It made my night!
He was a handful
John, I subscribed today. I have been watching your content for awhile now. I find your content interesting, but there is more. Your cheerful demeanor is uplifting. Your passion for preserving the Cornwall marine ecosystem is contagious. Your underwater footage is magical and stunning. This content is as much about you as it is about the sea. You really make the channel. Best regards from Ohio, USA.
Thank you Timothy and welcome to our channel. 😊🦀🐙🦞
I'm from toledo Ohio and I love this channel.
And I’m completely agree with you. I also watch another channels and they never mind if crabs are small or octopus baby. Sometimes I tell myself like hey you got it don’t throw you deserved good size octopus got it. I hope you got this time Enjoy 🤞🏻
Spot on….John is a top bloke and deserves every success with this channel and in general because he puts the work in and knows his stuff….he’s also a great dad to James and his daughter 💯👌❤️
Also Toledo!
Is there anything you don't know, can't stop watching all your videos John, truly a lovely man who cares so much for nature, don't stop
I am still learning every day, and I hope I never stop. 😊👍🏻
That smile and nod is everything, such an endearing chap
Just happy sharing what I love doing. 😊👍🏻🐙🦞
Drinking a cold beer sitting on the back of my narrowboat watching this. Great way to spend a Sunday evening. 👍
Sounds pretty bloody good to me too. 👍🏻🐙
@@TheFishLocker. Glad I discovered your channel. You have Hazey to thank for that. Look forward to Sunday evenings now. A cold beer and chill out in a mad mixed up world. 👍
I love the new pots! You fighting with that octopus made me laugh so hard that I had tears rolling down my face. I don’t think I’ve laughed like that for a very long time. Thank you! I can’t wait to see what Jim comes up with!
Hello how are you doing?
If this video has brightened your day then it has been worth making. Have a wonderful week and take care. 😊🐙
The weather was so calm. You make speed boat trap dropping such an art. Can't wait for the cookup.
Video in editing. 😉👍🏻🐙
Ever since the early days of your channel, I have loved the content. Always calming to watch, always interesting. I love the sea!
As usual, this was fantastic. Respect mate.
Thank you. I try to stick to the same principles I set out when we started. Simple, honest and original content. 😊🐙🦀
@@TheFishLocker Yeah, no bells and whistles, just authentic and interesting content. That's what many like to see and just listen to your narration and the beautiful sound of the sea : )
I just happened to stumble across your channel. My wife and I are hooked. It's amazing to watch the different species you come across and your upbeat demeanor. We absolutely look forward to what future adventures await you and your family.
Thank you and welcome to our channel. I am glad that you are enjoying joining us on our adventures. 😊🦞🐙
really funny ...your struggles with that octopus...also loved the little anecedote about the two v notches to stop the lobster swimming in circles! Laughed out loud, love your content and your presentation John. Really good entertainment....thank you !
Thank you very much. 😊👍🏻
Thanks for the new video and being a great role model, Uncle John Fish Locker. Sometimes I wish everyone followed half of your mindset in conservation and the effort you put in to do things the right way that is safer. Even that would make our world a little bit better, I think.
I hope you and your family are well and that your freezer is full.
No matter where you are or what you’re doing, do something to make it better. 😊🐙🦀🦞
Another wonderful video? Amazing work, lovely content. As someone with a fear of the ocean who wants to try this one day, I get to see what it's like a bit. Your videos always bring a smile to my face, and I hope you enjoy making them as much as we enjoy watching them.
I am glad you enjoy the videos Olivia. 😊🦀🦞
That octopus is so determined not to leave the boat I think it's safe to say at that point it volunteered for a dinner invite. 😂 I always love your videos, the fact that you always take the time to educate, and how much you clearly respect the environment you're working in (and the creatures in it).
Thank you very much, I am simply happy to be able to share what I know and love doing. 😊🐙
Cookit in a bookit😅
Seeing you argue with the crabs and octopus is such a pick me up! So funny!
Glad you found it amusing. 🤣
I always cheer when you successfully say "she sheds her shell"
thanks mate, mint video, that's me boro accent coming out🤣
Haha. 🦞
fantastic video, I always enjoy them. I know there is little room for sentiment in this environment but I really felt for the Octupus, trying its best to survive. Maybe I am getting too old but their intelligence, compared to the lobsters, is like comparing Einstein to a brick. Please keep the videos coming.
Yeah I don't really approve of eating octopus, but I gather from the news that there's an over-abundance of our eight-armed friends around the Cornish coast right now, so taking one for the pot (especially a kraken of the deep like that one) is more acceptable
Their population in recent years has absolutely exploded. I could take 5 a day and still wouldn’t even scratch the surface.
I agree.
Once I learned how intelligent octopuses are, I stopped eating them. It's not like eating lobster or crab -basically sea bugs. You feel bad for the octopus. Like eating a dolphin.
@@matthewhudson5685 You eat Dolphins?
@@JazzFunkNobby1964 NO! Never would. Because I knew how intelligent they were. I didn't understand that about octopuses. Once I learned more about them, I stopped eating them.
What a gorgeous day!! -and the water is stunning! I love watching you bring up pots it’s like lucky dip literally!!! Lol cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 xx
I really enjoy hauling our pots. Always excited to see what’s in them. 😊🦀🦞🐙
Just sat down to a bowl of strawberries and cream, sun is shining on a pleasant Sunday afternoon, and, a new Fish Locker video pops up, yep, life is good! 😁
LOL, man versus octopus, definite idea for a new series there, John! You could invite guests on and all sorts! Who will brave the octopus in the octagon? 💪 🐙
Haha. Men being carried out by stretcher all covered in sucker marks. 🤣🐙
@@TheFishLocker Until Jim enters the ring, then everyone gets a full belly! 👨🍳🍽👌
Another glass sea and a brilliant sky…AND a giant octopus! Awesome!
Stunning day wasn't it 😊🐙
I admire your confidence in putting your hand into a pot without fear of being nipped by a crab or lobster. I enjoyed your videos on your trip to the USA and remind me of their small but ferocious swimming crabs that seem to be able to do back flips to bite your fingers. I wondered how you set about picking up lobsters/crabs when they are in one of your pots without being nipped.
You will see in some of our shore foraging videos how I go about holding tricky crabs and lobsters. 😊👍🏻🦀🦞
John I like your approach to sustainable lobster trapping.
Thank you Mark. 😊👍🏻
Oh that weather. I said it before and I'll say it again, I love your videos while also being jealous of you for getting to live on the coast like that. Thanks for the great video and God Bless.
On a fine day there’s nowhere better. 👍🏻🐙
I've been watching you for a while now, I did message you about the shore caught bass record you still have. But forget about that, you do what's right and it's great to watch, educating the kids on the rules of what they catch and what to do moving forward , I'll be a life long supporter guaranteed, you a a teacher/fisherman of the sea and anyone who is new to this should watch you no matter what, can't wait for the next video, have a great weekend
Thank you. I get so many messages I often can’t keep up with everything. All the best and enjoy the videos. 👍🏻🎣
Can't help but smile and feel good when watching your videos, thanks bud
It is our pleasure. I am glad that you enjoy our content. 😊🐙🦞
John you are indeed an epitome of the word "integrity..." doing the right thing even no one is looking" Good job dear Sir.. with folks like you I know our oceans will be in great shape! Cheers!!!
I have always been the same. Even to my detriment. When asked I answer. If I don’t have my integrity what else is worth having?
So much work to have to toss most back. So proud of this guy’s integrity!
Simply doing what I feel is right. I hope others will see this and follow the example. 😊🦀🦞
Morning John! Nice day! I love watching hauling pots!
I love doing it. 💪🏻🦞🦀
I always love seeing the occasional octopus, and man this one's a fighter.
He went a full 10 rounds didn’t he. 🤣
Wonderful video put a smile on my face an the beauty of the ocean, was amazing . My dad passed away Thursday. He was 88 . We watched a few of your videos an he really enjoyed them. I know he was laughing at that octopus, cause I had tears running down my face I was laughing so hard! They say octopus are escape artists- also looked like they stick well also! Thank you so much for what you do, an for sharing!!! Blessed Be !!
Haha. Honestly it was like fighting with 2 stone of chewing gum with a mind for mischief!!! I am sorry to hear of your loss and wish you a better day. 😊💙🐙
Thankfully it was a calm day, imagine pulling up the red pots while you got choppy water lol. Can't wait to see the video of Jim cooking the Octopus.
They are a handful. 🤣
Dealing with that octopus has really raised my curiosity on how to handle, despatch, butcher, then eventually cook them.... So looking forward to that....
They are a handful I’ll give them that. 🤣

Yup no rocking and rolling on this haul John 👍🏼, looked a fantastic day on the water, had to chuckle about the octopus-n-a bucket catch and cook ! KFC did it with chicken 🤣👍🏼👍🏼. Look forward to see what Jim has in store, your efforts are appreciated mate.👍🏼👍🏼🐙🦞

What a session, that was one of the best hauls ive ever seen you take, that was wonderful, love the new pots, really interesting variation of species, am curious to know if that was down to the pots or the positioning of them in deeper water, so will await the next haul of those ones with eager anticipation, another great video John
Pots can be the best in the world but if you don’t put them in the right place they won’t fish.
Some great pots and can't wait to see what Jim does with the octopus

I just found your channel and I really enjoy it. I live near the Chesapeake Bay in the USA, so I'm not a stranger to fishing or running some pots. But it's great to see the different species you catch which are quite different than ours on this side of the "pond." Cheers, Dan
Welcome to our channel Dan. All the best sir.
The new pots look good John. I'm looking forward to seeing the Octopus cooked, assuming you ever got him out of that bucket 🪣 🐙😁
Haha. Cooking video in editing.
I'm looking forward to that, too. I think the last time I had Octopus for tea was when we lived in Malta many years ago, and it wasn't the rubbery mess that you tend to get here.
John - Was the octopus in your lobster pot trying to hide, obtain his own dinner or just after the bait in there?
Easy recipe popular in Spain. Large pot filled with boiling water, hold octopus by the head ( no need to be alive we buy frozen ones ) and dip the tentacles all the way into the boiling water lift up and dip again three times then put whole octopus in and allow to cook +- 30 minutes if a toothpick enters the top of leg easily it’s cooked. Here in Spain they put a large potato in with the octopus and when cooked, once cooled these are the sliced and plated on a serving platter the cold octopus tentacles then scissor cut in thin rounds and spread on top of the potato. A little salt and pimento is sprinkled on and a good sprinkling of olive oil and then enjoyed with cold frosty and crusty bread. The cooked octopus whole or legs freeze well so no need to run out at any time.
@@mstrdiver The Octopus wanted to be on CZcams.
You have to love John and his family they are great people, they love the marine life in Cornwall and enjoy harvesting sustainably at the right time of season taking what mother nature provides, a great example is set in this share where notching of a female which does not hold eggs is v-notched as she is known as a breeding female to protect her going forwards, this will provides hundreds of thousands of spawn for future generations, 👍
I'm gob smacked for once 😆

Hello John, I watched last week’s with the enormous octopus, then read in local press about the numbers off Cornwall. This week’s definitely shows that. And soon it will be time for dustbin lid jelly fish by the thousands
They are here in the thousand mate.

As soon as you said "stay down there and stay out of trouble" My brain goes. oh boi are there going to be trouble and later you pan down and there is an octopus tucked onto all the things it could I am just dying of laughter. Thanks for sharing your lobster pot adventures. Love em!
That octopus really did give me the run around didn’t he. 🤣🐙
Thank you John again love watching your video everyone is different take care mate.
Thanks Keith.
Beautiful film! I just subscribed and surely will enjoy further surprising films. Being from the Netherlands I nonetheless managed to understand most of what you told. At first I guessed you were somewhere near the Scottish coast, but learned in fact it is Cornwall. Thanks for this beautiful look into some sealife and the way you respectfully preserve it for may be the future. Good luck!
Welcome to our channel. I am from the NE of the U.K. but we live and film a lot of our content in Cornwall.
@@TheFishLocker Thanks for stating your origins. I thought that sounded like a proper Yorkshire accent.
In my experience, when Octopus sheltered "upside down" like that there was usually some heavy weather coming. Those red pots seem to be doing the trick, well done. :)

Watching you wrestle with that octopus and you saying he has more arms than I have made me laugh out loud. Newcomer to your channel-so fascinating! Such effort! How often do you get octopuses 🐙 in your pots? This is my second octopus in as many videos. Thank you for your positivity and information!
The local population of octopus has exploded. They are not a common capture here.
@@TheFishLocker so do you find that you are competing with octopus for the critters you are hoping for? I was curious & watched a video of an octopus “looting” crab pots and leaving the empty carcasses behind!
Jim will have his hands full with that Octopus John.
Thanks for another great upload mate!
Our pleasure Pat. 👍🏻
John great yet again, new pots seem to be good catchers. All the best for the season with new pot.
Thanks Steve. 👍🏻🐙
question john purely because im nosey , have you ever kept a note of the baits you put in your pots just to see if lobsters have a preference or if one bait catches more crabs than lobsters or maybe one bait is not worth the effort
Of course I have. 99% of what you see me do is the product of time and effort, experimentation and thought.
do hope i didnt cause offence john its just that my only experience of what goes into a pot as bait is from my childhood when i lived in cromer [60 years ago] when the commercial boys used any & everything so long as it was free or very very cheap as in well past its sell by date ,every thing from dogfish & roker down to smelts & butts .even read stories of long ago when they used fresh water bream when it was still legal
Hi John, have you seen Australian cray pots, they are made from cane and are round, not sure of legal regulations, but I wonder if they would catch lobsters as crayfish are quite similar. They look a lot lighter than your pots.
Great vid as usual.
