I agree with what you said about verifying that you need to shut off the gas. One HVAC company lied to me about this and almost sold me a $7,000 new furnace. I got a 2nd tech to look at it and it was a $10 hose that was cracked

The independent builder we bought our house from in 2001 tried charging us the price of a new furnace to convert the heat from propane to natural gas. Our brother in law was in heating and cooling and explained how easy and inexpensive it was to do the conversion. The builder was quite surprised when we told him we knew how hvac conversion is done and the price of such. You could tell he was embarrassed he got caught trying to gouge us. In fact we demanded to pay gas company directly for house connection. He was going to charge us almost double for that too.

How do you not know there is a difference between natural gas and liquid propane. You are very lucky that you didn’t burn your house down. Glad you are ok

I learned a lot on this one. Our landlord switched from oil heating to propane, and they even had the water shut off the switch everythingover. I'm glad he had someone trained do it because he certainly isn't as handy as Joel!

How long with a 1000 propane last for? The house is big so would take a lot to heat.

You were right it tests the water column in the gas valve!

I didn’t know anything about what you showed but glad I learned it now.

I switched my house to geothermal heat pump. Went from using ~250 gallons of oil ($750 to $1k) to spending about $600 on electricity to run the heat pump (and that's when the electric strip heater turned on). I am in SEPA. Bonus is that I also get a slightly reduced electric distribution rate due to have electric heat. Electricity here is about 10c to 15c per kwh (standard rate).

Is solar potentially an option in the future for your electricity? I love learning about house stuff if for nothing else I can talk to the professionals and know what I am paying for better or if I am being taken.

I would have never know there was a size difference because of altitude!! Learn something new everyday for sure!! Good work Joel!! 🪛⚒🔨🛠🔧🧰

Joel...you left out geo-thetmal heating/cooling. You have the perfect space for that. Why didn't you go that route with a house the size you have?

I would love to do that, but it is outrageously expensive. It is beyond cost recouping.

As a hvac contractor I DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT YOU CONVERT GAS VALVES FROM NATURAL GAS TO LP UNLESS YOU ARE CERTIFIED TO DO SO. IT'S EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!!!
