    Video Summary:
Procrastination is the human tendency to resist doing something, and is an insidious robber of time, dreams, and energy. Simplistically, the cure for procrastination is action.
Several techniques can be helpful to overcome the mind's resistance to doing anything that we have told it we "should," "must," or "need" to do. As soon as we make it an imperative, our childish brain starts to resist. So the first technique is to make the imperative a choice. By removing the pressure, the job becomes less onerous and much easier to undertake.
Alternatively, focus on no longer resisting the resistance. The longer you focus on it, the quicker the resistance will dissipate.
An alternative method is the Sedona method, which addresses the negative emotions associated with the dreaded task. Progressively querying yourself and answering a set of questions can release the negative emotion. A similar method focuses instead on cultivating a positive emotion regarding the task, by thinking of a way to generate enthusiasm for it.
Lastly, try putting your procrastination under a microscope. When caught procrastinating, step outside of yourself and become an observer, without trying to change the outcome. Becoming conscious of the process will rob it of its ability to quietly sabotage you.

Quick Tip: never sleep before WRITING down what specifically you will do tomorrow to get closer to your goal. A lot of times we don't take action because it seems there's a lot to be done. But if you actually write down a manageable fraction of the end result, your brain sees it as doable and you're more likely to do it. Plus after you do something you WROTE down beforehand, makes you feel good and more likely to repeat the cycle.

Come on Robert you can do it and its going to be amazingly fulfilling after all those years. Do what I do, every night before you go to bed, put on your headphones for maximum concentration and watch one of Leo's videos.
Stay with him and go through everything he says and apply it with your imagination to your own circumstances.
And when you finish the video, you kind of think yourself positively to sleep.

I'm astonished when you said you're 57 man ! Me too! I enjoy very much his videos and just when I had a severe anxiety and depression last year ( Im seein a psychiatrist too ) I bega changing but Im resisting so much! ) My main purpose is to meditate regularly and practice mindfulness - whatever guide you choose to follow is just great and so obvious !!lol. One great guy to tch at YT and is recomeended By Leo is Shinzen |Young...just listen!! Well that, if you feel that meditation can be of some help to you. Before I watched some videos of Leo I was already into meditation but not as regularly that I - or anyone -should. Im a quite inteligent guy...I read a lot of literature and philosophy I even have a Phd on philosophy), I travel by motorcycle, have nice ideas, exercise almost every day and Im aware Im above the average form of thinking....generally speaking. But my behaviour towards somethings is somewhat childish, imature. My emotional inteligence is still very raw. My depression and anxiety also helped me - by force - to bend and see that only through reasoning Im not going to overcome somethings, that's why I face budhism and taoism as a very deep knowledge of human psychology. You don't have to be religious - that's up to you -, but the standpoints of the, so called taoism and the zen budhism are very wise. But this words of mine had only the intention to - humbly - share and contribute with you whaterever you're going through. Greetings from Rio de Janeiro :-) ( sorry for my english mistakes cause it's not my native language )

SUMMARY - Actulized - How To Stop Procrastinating - A Step-by-Step Process For Busting The Worst of Procrastination
The cure from procrastination is action in spite of the resistance
The more you procrastinate the worse it gets
Whatever you resist it is within you
any resistance contains a must, should or need to do it. You have resistance because you have a negative movie in your head, getting in motion when you procrastinate
there is a inner conflict within you: must/should/need vs. procrastination
Tell yourself you dont have to do it. Give yourself the possibility to choose. You dont have to do nothing you think you have to.
    Accept that you have choices
Allow the feeling of resistance. allow yourself to feel the resistance.
Once you stop running away from it its not as bad as you think it is
your mind exaggerates and catastrophizes your resistance
Release emotions with sedona method: ---> sedona method videos
    ask yourself:
    1. can I just allow myself to feel this feeling? Feel it really
    2. Could I let it go? No ->Could I let this feeling go in theory?
    3. Would you let it go If I could?
    4. When would you let it go if you could?
Do this a couple of times
    Reversive Sedona:
    1. Could you allow yourself to get excited about this activity? Is it possible to get excited? think about one thing that would make you excited and feel it
    2. Take five to ten minuets making a visualization doing this activity. visualize yourself doing this activity, especially the beginning (EG. getting up, going to the car etc..)
Focus on the starting because this is the hard part. Visualize getting in action.
Become a watcher, a observer of your procrastination in action. Step outside yourself and watch yourself procrastinating, just observe. As you become conscious of your procrastination most resistance dissipates
Self sabotage stops when being aware because it happens unconscious
baby step it, start small. If you have a big project to do just take the first little baby step.
Tell yourself to not do it at all, start really small doing less than you want to do like only a few reps in gym or only 10 mins of tax work, only 5 mins of reading...
allow yourself to start small, below your goal
    Thanks Leo

This is nice and refreshing coming from a former procrastinator. I always watch videos like this and they always just say something and tell you to do it. Like steps or whatever. I KNOW that. I just can't bring myself to do it! They tell you to break up the assignment. What if I don't even want to look at it? Or they tell you starting is the hard part, but not how to start it. Knowing about my fears is good and all, but it doesn't help if I can't do it.
I'll try this method tomorrow and see how it goes. Thank you!

  • @colloredbrothers
    @colloredbrothers Před 8 lety +8

Procrastination is an extremely strange phenomena, iv been battling with it for years now. I will tell you why its not just as simple as laziness. I have taught myself Chinese up to the pre-intermediate level, then I went to China for a year and studied it further in University, while there I was also teaching English classes. I go to the gym without fail 3 times a week, I used to do it 5 times but i was getting too many injuries. I have recently learned the Cyrillic alphabet and am now practicing blind typing it as a preparation for learning Russian. I do this daily, just as I keep up with my Chinese.
I do these things consistently because I enjoy doing them and there is no formal authoritative structure in place that evaluates my progress or lack thereof. This causes me to be in a complete relaxed mindset about these activities.
However when it comes to my Software Engineering degree that I'm basically on the brink of finishing I am extremely self sabotaging. I'm currently doing 6 years over a degree that normally takes 3. It's not because I'm stupid, its because on one hand I don't like IT that much and on the other hand I feel this immense pressure to perform. It paralyzes me. I have fantasies about just dropping out and going out into the world, but that would be incredibly stupid at this point.
When I was little I procrastinated too, but school was a lot easier back then. I studied the day before a test and did fine. The IT degree however requires you to put in effort each day for an extended period of time to build a huge project. This is where my procrastination became real evident. Had I endeavored to do a more theoretical degree I would not have the problems I have now. Its a lot easier to sit down and read a book than to create a program. When I was a kid I was also much more impressionable, the fear of my teachers and parents was keeping me in line. Once I reached a certain age, say 20, I began to lose that fear and without that fear there is only one thing that can substitute that drive, motivation. But how can you be motivated doing something you despise? The reality of the situation was making itself known to me, my entire being could no longer walk the path that I was pushed upon.
In the end I believe that procrastination is an indication of how aligned your current life is with your real interests.
My biggest fear is that I will become poor and achieve nothing in life, however I believe that on the other side of ones greatest fear is enlightenment. I think life is telling me to jump into the abyss, but I'm not sure where its going to lead me, I have a faint feeling that there will be happiness, but all I see now is darkness.

I'm ruining my life by procrastinating everything. It's been a part of my life for probably nearly a decade now (i'm 20, so i started pretty young). Some of these tips are very helpful and its not just like "do this and its done". You speak differently and approach this nicely. I've stopped smoking weed for a week now because I feel guilt doing it as it makes me procrastinate even more. I'm depressed as i'm still not in university, whilst all of my friends are and i'm trying to stop this procrastination and get that University application but its so hard for me. I'll force my self to write my personal profile for a bit, then I feel as if it is terrible and switch to something else. My family thinks i'm a failure right now and that I am not motivated to go to University but the thing is; i am so motivated to go, and I really, really want to go to university but I can't show that motivation to my family as.....there is nothing to show. I'm slowly taking the procrastination away though, I can feel it; but its still not enough. I always try to stay positive, but sometimes I just loose it.

You have such an empathetic and intuitive way of explaining human psychology. You really seem to understand my thought process, which is a lovely reminder that, regardless of your reasons for procrastinating, the struggle is quite similar for many people.
You do an amazing job and deserve your own talk show. It's too bad that network television doesn't have much of an interest in helping people get up and away from the T.V. and on with their lives. You, however, do.
    You're a humanitarian hero.
I struggle financially, emotionally and organizationally. You've videos have already helped me move closer to my desired version of myself. I'm intelligent and morally driven in my life and career goals. When I become financially stable enough to support you, I most certainly will. I hope that anyone who finds great success due to the help you provide remembers to come back and give credit where credit is due. Surely, we should take pride in doing what was necessary ourselves, but putting us in a mindset that will allow for such fulfillment and success is so valuable.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much, Leo!

It's almost like some emotions are very shy, the more you ponder and the more attention you give them the more they seem to fade. When I'm upset over something, considering I can be very irritable, I often try to trace why exactly I'm upset and from there I explore the exact source of my anger and consider if it is a worthy of negative emotion. By the time I get to the exploration bit my anger is usually extinguished significantly. It's kinda cool.

This is extraordinary. I am an enormously intractable, pathological procrastinator; procrastination has actually ruined my life in the past. This video has been extremely helpful. Thank you!

The idea of those ‘no choice’ words like “must” and “have to” are so true.
Where I have been in situations where someone has told me (though not in these actual words), “You _must_ say “yes” to this! “No” is not allowed!”, the resistance comes fighting back with a vengeance, even though saying “yes” and doing the “yes” might be the best option! I find myself reading sentences replacing all the “have tos”, “got tos”, “musts”, and “shoulds” with “cans”, “coulds”, etc. “Will” is an excellent word, but “can” still leaves the door left ajar! 😉 I have become quite good at it, as it just rolls off the tongue quite naturally by now as I read off the - ahem - “adapted” sentences! 😁
I do worry a lot though. I do need to - no wait! - I _can_ just get on and just do it to the best of my ability and not worry about thing so much. The doing comes _before_ the inspiration.
    Great video, Leo.
